| 1 At many moments in the past and by many means, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets;but | 1 In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, |
| 2 in our time, the final days, he has spoken to us in the person of his Son, whom he appointed heir of althings and through whom he made the ages. | 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. |
| 3 He is the reflection of God's glory and bears the impress of God's own being, sustaining all things byhis powerful command; and now that he has purged sins away, he has taken his seat at the right hand of thedivine Majesty on high. | 3 He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature, upholding the universe by his word of power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, |
| 4 So he is now as far above the angels as the title which he has inherited is higher than their own name. | 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has obtained is more excellent than theirs. |
| 5 To which of the angels, then, has God ever said: You are my Son, today I have fathered you, or: I shalbe a father to him and he a son to me? | 5 For to what angel did God ever say, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"? Or again, "I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son"? |
| 6 Again, when he brings the First-born into the world, he says: Let all the angels of God pay him homage. | 6 And again, when he brings the first-born into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." |
| 7 To the angels, he says: appointing the winds his messengers and flames of fire his servants, | 7 Of the angels he says, "Who makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire." |
| 8 but to the Son he says: Your throne, God, is for ever and ever; and: the sceptre of his kingdom is asceptre of justice; | 8 But of the Son he says, "Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever, the righteous scepter is the scepter of thy kingdom. |
| 9 you love uprightness and detest evil. This is why God, your God, has anointed you with the oil ofgladness, as none of your rivals. | 9 Thou hast loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with the oil of gladness beyond thy comrades." |
| 10 And again: Long ago, Lord, you laid earth's foundations, the heavens are the work of your hands. | 10 And, "Thou, Lord, didst found the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of thy hands; |
| 11 They pass away but you remain, they al wear out like a garment. | 11 they will perish, but thou remainest; they will all grow old like a garment, |
| 12 Like a cloak you wil rol them up, like a garment, and they wil be changed. But you never alter andyour years are unending. | 12 like a mantle thou wilt roll them up, and they will be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years will never end." |
| 13 To which of the angels has God ever said: Take your seat at my right hand til I have made yourenemies your footstool? | 13 But to what angel has he ever said, "Sit at my right hand, till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet"? |
| 14 Are they not al ministering spirits, sent to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? | 14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation? |
