NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
You may be quite sure that in the last days there will be some difficult times.1 Hoc autem scito, quod in novissimis diebus instabunt tempora periculosa :
People wil be self-centred and avaricious, boastful, arrogant and rude; disobedient to their parents,ungrateful, irreligious;2 erunt homines seipsos amantes, cupidi, elati, superbi, blasphemi, parentibus non obedientes, ingrati, scelesti,
heartless and intractable; they wil be slanderers, profligates, savages and enemies of everything that isgood;3 sine affectione, sine pace, criminatores, incontinentes, immites, sine benignitate,
they wil be treacherous and reckless and demented by pride, preferring their own pleasure to God.4 proditores, protervi, tumidi, et voluptatum amatores magis quam Dei :
They wil keep up the outward appearance of religion but wil have rejected the inner power of it. Keepaway from people like that.5 habentes speciem quidem pietatis, virtutem autem ejus abnegantes. Et hos devita :
Of the same kind, too, are those men who insinuate themselves into families in order to get influenceover sil y women who are obsessed with their sins and follow one craze after another,6 ex his enim sunt qui penetrant domos, et captivas ducunt mulierculas oneratas peccatis, quæ ducuntur variis desideriis :
always seeking learning, but unable ever to come to knowledge of the truth.7 semper discentes, et numquam ad scientiam veritatis pervenientes.
Just as Jannes and Jambres defied Moses, so these men defy the truth, their minds corrupt and theirfaith spurious.8 Quemadmodum autem Jannes et Mambres restiterunt Moysi : ita et hi resistunt veritati, homines corrupti mente, reprobi circa fidem ;
But they will not be able to go on much longer: their fol y, like that of the other two, must become obviousto everybody.9 sed ultra non proficient : insipientia enim eorum manifesta erit omnibus, sicut et illorum fuit.
You, though, have followed my teaching, my way of life, my aims, my faith, my patience and my love,my perseverance10 Tu autem assecutus es meam doctrinam, institutionem, propositum, fidem, longanimitatem, dilectionem, patientiam,
and the persecutions and sufferings that came to me in places like Antioch, Iconium and Lystra -- althe persecutions I have endured; and the Lord has rescued me from every one of them.11 persecutiones, passiones : qualia mihi facta sunt Antiochiæ, Iconii, et Lystris : quales persecutiones sustinui, et ex omnibus eripuit me Dominus.
But anybody who tries to live in devotion to Christ is certain to be persecuted;12 Et omnes, qui pie volunt vivere in Christo Jesu, persecutionem patientur.
while these wicked impostors wil go from bad to worse, deceiving others, and themselves deceived.13 Mali autem homines et seductores proficient in pejus, errantes, et in errorem mittentes.
You must keep to what you have been taught and know to be true; remember who your teachers were,14 Tu vero permane in iis quæ didicisti, et credita sunt tibi : sciens a quo didiceris :
and how, ever since you were a child, you have known the holy scriptures -from these you can learnthe wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.15 et quia ab infantia sacras litteras nosti, quæ te possunt instruere ad salutem, per fidem quæ est in Christo Jesu.
Al scripture is inspired by God and useful for refuting error, for guiding people's lives and teachingthem to be upright.16 Omnis Scriptura divinitus inspirata utilis est ad docendum, ad arguendum, ad corripiendum, et erudiendum in justitia :
This is how someone who is dedicated to God becomes ful y equipped and ready for any good work.17 ut perfectus sit homo Dei, ad omne opus bonum instructus.
