1 Never speak sharply to a man older than yourself, but appeal to him as you would to your own father;treat younger men as brothers,	1 Un uomo anziano non lo riprendere duramente, ma esortalo come fosse tuo padre; i giovani, poi, come fossero tuoi fratelli,
2 older women as mothers and young women as sisters with al propriety.	2 le donne anziane come madri, le giovani come sorelle, in tutta castità.
3 Be considerate to widows -- if they real y are widowed.	3 Onora le vedove che sono veramente vedove.
4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, they are to learn first of al to do their duty to their own familiesand repay their debt to their parents, because this is what pleases God.	4 Se però qualche vedova ha dei figli o nipoti, costoro imparino prima ad esercitare la pietà verso la propria famiglia e a rendere il contraccambio ai loro genitori, poiché questo è gradito davanti a Dio.
5 But a woman who is real y widowed and left on her own has set her hope on God and perseveres nightand day in petitions and prayer.	5 Quella, però, che è veramente vedova ed è rimasta sola, dimostra di aver riposto in Dio la sua speranza e attende con perseveranza alle suppliche e alle orazioni, notte e giorno.
6 The one who thinks only of pleasure is already dead while she is stil alive:	6 Al contrario, la vedova che si abbandona ai piaceri, anche se viva è già morta.
7 instruct them in this, too, so that their lives may be blameless.	7 Questo pure tu richiamerai loro: che siano irreprensibili.
8 Anyone who does not look after his own relations, especial y if they are living with him, has rejected thefaith and is worse than an unbeliever.	8 Se poi qualcuno non ha cura dei suoi, soprattutto di quelli di casa, ha rinnegato la fede ed è peggiore di un infedele.
9 Enrolment as a widow is permissible only for a woman at least sixty years old who has had only onehusband.	9 Una vedova sia scritta nel catalogo (delle vedove), a condizione che non sia inferiore ai sessant'anni, sia stata moglie di un solo marito,
10 She must be a woman known for her good works -- whether she has brought up her children, beenhospitable to strangers and washed the feet of God's holy people, helped people in hardship or been active in allkinds of good work.	10 abbia in suo favore la testimonianza delle buone opere: se educò i figli, se praticò l'ospitalità, se lavò i piedi dei santi, se venne in soccorso ai tribolati, se si dedicò ad ogni opera buona.
11 Do not accept young widows because if their natural desires distract them from Christ, they want tomarry again,	11 Non accettare invece le vedove più giovani, poiché, non appena vengono prese da brame indegne di Cristo, esse vogliono risposarsi,
12 and then people condemn them for being unfaithful to their original promise.	12 attirandosi addosso un giudizio di condanna per aver rinnegato il loro impegno iniziale.
13 Besides, they learn how to be idle and go round from house to house; and then, not merely idle, theylearn to be gossips and meddlers in other people's affairs and to say what should remain unsaid.	13 Oltre a ciò, essendo anche oziose, imparano ad andare in giro per le case; e non soltanto sono oziose, ma anche ciarliere e curiose, parlando di ciò che non conviene.
14 I think it is best for young widows to marry again and have children and a household to look after, andnot give the enemy any chance to raise a scandal about them;	14 Perciò voglio che le più giovani si sposino, abbiano figli, governino la loro casa e non diano all'avversario nessuna occasione di biasimo.
15 there are already some who have turned aside to fol ow Satan.	15 Alcune infatti si sono già fuorviate dietro a Satana.
16 If a woman believer has widowed relatives, she should support them and not make the Church bear theexpense but enable it to support those who are real y widowed.	16 Se qualche donna fedele ha con sé delle vedove, provveda al loro sostentamento e non si aggravi la chiesa, affinché essa possa provvedere a quelle che sono veramente vedove.
17 Elders who do their work wel while they are in charge earn double reward, especial y those who workhard at preaching and teaching.	17 I presbiteri che presiedono bene siano stimati degni di doppio onore, soprattutto quelli che si affaticano nella parola e nell'insegnamento.
18 As scripture says: You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn; and again: The workerdeserves his wages.	18 Dice infatti la Scrittura: Non metterai la museruola al bue che trebbia. Ed ancora: E' degno l'operaio della sua mercede.
19 Never accept any accusation brought against an elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses.	19 Non ricevere accuse contro un presbitero, eccetto che su deposizione di due o tre testimoni.
20 If anyone is at fault, reprimand him publicly, as a warning to the rest.	20 Quelli poi che avessero peccato, riprendili davanti a tutti, affinché anche i rimanenti ne abbiano timore.
21 Before God, and before Jesus Christ and the angels he has chosen, I charge you to keep these rulesimpartial y and never to be influenced by favouritism.	21 Ti scongiuro davanti a Dio e a Cristo Gesù e davanti agli angeli eletti di osservare queste cose senza prevenzione, nulla facendo per favoritismo.
22 Do not be too quick to lay hands on anyone, and never make yourself an accomplice in anybody else'ssin; keep yourself pure.	22 Non imporre a nessuno le mani troppo affrettatamente, per non renderti partecipe degli altrui peccati. Consèrvati puro.
23 You should give up drinking only water and have a little wine for the sake of your digestion and thefrequent bouts of illness that you have.	23 Non continuare a bere acqua soltanto, ma fa' moderato uso di vino a causa dello stomaco e delle tue frequenti malattie.
24 The faults of some people are obvious long before they come to the reckoning, while others have faultsthat are not discovered until later.	24 I peccati di alcuni uomini sono manifesti e li precedono in giudizio; ad altri invece vengono dietro.
25 Similarly, the good that people do can be obvious; but even when it is not, it cannot remain hidden.	25 Alla stessa maniera, anche le opere buone sono manifeste, e quelle che non lo sono non possono rimanere nascoste.
