1 Never speak sharply to a man older than yourself, but appeal to him as you would to your own father;treat younger men as brothers,	1 Non rimproverare duramente un anziano, ma esortalo come fosse tuo padre, i più giovani come fratelli,
2 older women as mothers and young women as sisters with al propriety.	2 le donne anziane come madri e le più giovani come sorelle, in tutta purezza.
3 Be considerate to widows -- if they real y are widowed.	3 Onora le vedove, quelle che sono veramente vedove;
4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, they are to learn first of al to do their duty to their own familiesand repay their debt to their parents, because this is what pleases God.	4 ma se una vedova ha figli o nipoti, essi imparino prima ad adempiere i loro doveri verso quelli della propria famiglia e a contraccambiare i loro genitori: questa infatti è cosa gradita a Dio.
5 But a woman who is real y widowed and left on her own has set her hope on God and perseveres nightand day in petitions and prayer.	5 Colei che è veramente vedova ed è rimasta sola, ha messo la speranza in Dio e si consacra all’orazione e alla preghiera giorno e notte;
6 The one who thinks only of pleasure is already dead while she is stil alive:	6 al contrario, quella che si abbandona ai piaceri, anche se vive, è già morta.
7 instruct them in this, too, so that their lives may be blameless.	7 Raccomanda queste cose, perché siano irreprensibili.
8 Anyone who does not look after his own relations, especial y if they are living with him, has rejected thefaith and is worse than an unbeliever.	8 Se poi qualcuno non si prende cura dei suoi cari, soprattutto di quelli della sua famiglia, costui ha rinnegato la fede ed è peggiore di un infedele.
9 Enrolment as a widow is permissible only for a woman at least sixty years old who has had only onehusband.	9 Una vedova sia iscritta nel catalogo delle vedove quando abbia non meno di sessant’anni, sia moglie di un solo uomo,
10 She must be a woman known for her good works -- whether she has brought up her children, beenhospitable to strangers and washed the feet of God's holy people, helped people in hardship or been active in allkinds of good work.	10 sia conosciuta per le sue opere buone: abbia cioè allevato figli, praticato l’ospitalità, lavato i piedi ai santi, sia venuta in soccorso agli afflitti, abbia esercitato ogni opera di bene.
11 Do not accept young widows because if their natural desires distract them from Christ, they want tomarry again,	11 Le vedove più giovani non accettarle, perché, quando vogliono sposarsi di nuovo, abbandonano Cristo
12 and then people condemn them for being unfaithful to their original promise.	12 e si attirano così un giudizio di condanna, perché infedeli al loro primo impegno.
13 Besides, they learn how to be idle and go round from house to house; and then, not merely idle, theylearn to be gossips and meddlers in other people's affairs and to say what should remain unsaid.	13 Inoltre, non avendo nulla da fare, si abituano a girare qua e là per le case e sono non soltanto oziose, ma pettegole e curiose, parlando di ciò che non conviene.
14 I think it is best for young widows to marry again and have children and a household to look after, andnot give the enemy any chance to raise a scandal about them;	14 Desidero quindi che le più giovani si risposino, abbiano figli, governino la loro casa, per non dare ai vostri avversari alcun motivo di biasimo.
15 there are already some who have turned aside to fol ow Satan.	15 Alcune infatti si sono già perse dietro a Satana.
16 If a woman believer has widowed relatives, she should support them and not make the Church bear theexpense but enable it to support those who are real y widowed.	16 Se qualche donna credente ha con sé delle vedove, provveda lei a loro, e il peso non ricada sulla Chiesa, perché questa possa venire incontro a quelle che sono veramente vedove.
17 Elders who do their work wel while they are in charge earn double reward, especial y those who workhard at preaching and teaching.	17 I presbìteri che esercitano bene la presidenza siano considerati meritevoli di un duplice riconoscimento, soprattutto quelli che si affaticano nella predicazione e nell’insegnamento.
18 As scripture says: You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn; and again: The workerdeserves his wages.	18 Dice infatti la Scrittura: Non metterai la museruola al bue che trebbia, e: Chi lavora ha diritto alla sua ricompensa.
19 Never accept any accusation brought against an elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses.	19 Non accettare accuse contro un presbìtero se non vi sono due o tre testimoni.
20 If anyone is at fault, reprimand him publicly, as a warning to the rest.	20 Quelli poi che risultano colpevoli, rimproverali alla presenza di tutti, perché anche gli altri abbiano timore.
21 Before God, and before Jesus Christ and the angels he has chosen, I charge you to keep these rulesimpartial y and never to be influenced by favouritism.	21 Ti scongiuro davanti a Dio, a Cristo Gesù e agli angeli eletti, di osservare queste norme con imparzialità e di non fare mai nulla per favorire qualcuno.
22 Do not be too quick to lay hands on anyone, and never make yourself an accomplice in anybody else'ssin; keep yourself pure.	22 Non aver fretta di imporre le mani ad alcuno, per non farti complice dei peccati altrui. Consèrvati puro!
23 You should give up drinking only water and have a little wine for the sake of your digestion and thefrequent bouts of illness that you have.	23 Non bere soltanto acqua, ma bevi un po’ di vino, a causa dello stomaco e dei tuoi frequenti disturbi.
24 The faults of some people are obvious long before they come to the reckoning, while others have faultsthat are not discovered until later.	24 I peccati di alcuni si manifestano prima del giudizio, e di altri dopo;
25 Similarly, the good that people do can be obvious; but even when it is not, it cannot remain hidden.	25 così anche le opere buone vengono alla luce, e quelle che non lo sono non possono rimanere nascoste.
