1 Timothy 1

1 Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the command of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus ourhope,	1 פּוֹלוֹס שְׁלִיחַ יֵשׁוּעַ הַמָּשִׁיחַ כְּמִצְוַת הָאֱלֹהִים מוֹשִׁיעֵנוּ וְהָאָדוֹן יֵשׁוּעַ הַמָּשִׁיחַ תִּקְוָתֵנוּ
2 to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from ChristJesus our Lord.	2 אֶל־טִימוֹתִיּוֹס בְּנוֹ הָאֲמִתִּי בָּאֱמוּנָה חֶסֶד וְרַחֲמִים וְשָׁלוֹם מֵאֵת אֱלֹהִים אָבִינוּ וְהַמָּשִׁיחַ יֵשׁוּעַ אֲדֹנֵינוּ
3 When I was setting out for Macedonia I urged you to stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not tospread wrong teaching	3 הִנֵּה בְּלֶכְתִּי לְמַקְדּוֹנְיָא בִּקַּשְׁתִּי מִמְּךָ לָשֶׁבֶת בְּאֶפְסוֹס לְמַעַן תַּזְהִיר מִקְצָת אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁלֹּא יוֹרוּ תּוֹרָה זָרָה
4 or to give attention to myths and unending genealogies; these things only foster doubts instead offurthering God's plan which is founded on faith.	4 וְלֹא יָשִׂימוּ לִבָּם לְהַגָּדוֹת וּלְלִמּוּדֵי תוֹלָדוֹת אֵין־קֵץ הַמְבִיאִים יוֹתֵר לִשְׁאֵלוֹת מִלִּבְנוֹת בֵּית־אֱלֹהִים בָּאֱמוּנָה וְלִשְׁמֹר פִּקּוּדָיו
5 The final goal at which this instruction aims is love, issuing from a pure heart, a clear conscience and asincere faith.	5 כִּי־תַכְלִית הַמִּצְוָה הִיא הָאַהֲבָה בְּלֵב טָהוֹר וּבְרוּחַ טוֹבָה וּבֶאֱמוּנָה לֹא־צְבוּעָה
6 Some people have missed the way to these things and turned to empty speculation,	6 יֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר תָּעוּ מִמֶּנָּה וַיִּפְנוּ אַחֲרֵי לִמּוּדֵי תֹהוּ
7 trying to be teachers of the Law; but they understand neither the words they use nor the matters aboutwhich they make such strong assertions.	7 בְּחָשְׁבָם לִהְיוֹת מוֹרֵי תוֹרָה וְאֵינָם מְבִינִים מָה הֵם אֹמְרִים וּמָה הֵם מַחְלִיטִים
8 We are wel aware that the Law is good, but only provided it is used legitimately,	8 אֲבָל יָדַעְנוּ כִּי הַתּוֹרָה טוֹבָה הִיא אִם־יִתְנַהֵג בָּהּ הָאָדָם כַּתּוֹרָה
9 on the understanding that laws are not framed for people who are upright. On the contrary, they are forcriminals and the insubordinate, for the irreligious and the wicked, for the sacrilegious and the godless; they arefor people who kil their fathers or mothers and for murderers,	9 בְּדַעְתּוֹ זֹאת כִּי חֹק לֹא הוּשַׂם בַּעֲבוּר הַצַּדִּיק אֶלָּא בַּעֲבוּר הַסּוֹרְרִים וְהַמֹּרְדִים הָרְשָׁעִים וְהַחַטָּאִים עֹשֵׂי זִמָּה וּנְבָלָה מַכֵּי־אָב וּמַכֵּי־אֵם וּמְרַצְּחִים
10 for the promiscuous, homosexuals, kidnappers, for liars and for perjurers -- and for everything else thatis contrary to the sound teaching	10 וְזֹנִים וְשֹׁכְבִים אֶת־זָכָר וְגֹנְבֵי אָדָם וְכֹזְבִים וְנִשְׁבָּעִים לַשָּׁקֶר וְכָל־מַעֲשֶׂה הֶפֶךְ מִן־הַלֶּקַח הַבָּרִיא
11 that accords with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the gospel that was entrusted to me.	11 כְּפִי בְשׂוֹרַת כְּבוֹד הָאֵל הַמְבֹרָךְ אֲשֶׁר פְּקָדָהּ עָלָי
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength. By cal ing me into his service he has judgedme trustworthy,	12 וְהִנְנִי מוֹדֶה לְיֵשׁוּעַ הַמָּשִׁיחַ אֲדֹנֵינוּ הַמְאַזְּרֵנִי חָיִל כִּי חֲשָׁבַנִי נֶאֱמָן וַיְשִׂימֵנִי לִמְשָׁרֵת לוֹ
13 even though I used to be a blasphemer and a persecutor and contemptuous. Mercy, however, wasshown me, because while I lacked faith I acted in ignorance;	13 אֹתִי אֲשֶׁר מִלְּפָנִים הָיִיתִי מְגַדֵּף וּמְרַדֵּף וּמְחָרֵף אֲבָל רֻחַמְתִּי כִּי עָשִׂיתִי מִבְּלִי־דַעַת בְּאֵין אֱמוּנָה
14 but the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.	14 וַיִּגְדַּל עָלַי בִּמְאֹד מְאֹד חֶסֶד אֲדֹנֵינוּ עִם־הָאֱמוּנָה וְהָאַהֲבָה בַּמָּשִׁיחַ יֵשׁוּעַ
15 Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the worldto save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them;	15 נֶאֱמָן הַדָּבָר וְרָאוּי לְהִתְקַבֵּל עַל־כֹּל כִּי־הַמָּשִׁיחַ יֵשׁוּעַ בָּא לָעוֹלָם לְהוֹשִׁיעַ אֶת־הַחַטָּאִים אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי הַגָּדוֹל בָּהֶם
16 and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the leading exampleof his inexhaustible patience for al the other people who were later to trust in him for eternal life.	16 וּבַעֲבוּר זֹאת רֻחַמְתִּי לְמַעַן אֲשֶׁר יַרְאֶה יֵשׁוּעַ הַמָּשִׁיחַ בִּי בָרִאשׁוֹנָה אֶת־כָּל־אֹרֶךְ רוּחוֹ לִהְיוֹתִי לְמוֹפֵת לְכֹל אֲשֶׁר־יָבֹאוּ לְהַאֲמִין בּוֹ לְחַיֵּי עוֹלָם
17 To the eternal King, the undying, invisible and only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.	17 וּלְמֶלֶךְ עוֹלָמִים לֵאלֹהִים הַקַּיָּם לָעַד וְהַנֶּעְלָם מֵעַיִן וְהֶחָכָם לְבַדּוֹ לוֹ הַכָּבוֹד וְהֶהָדָר לְעוֹלְמֵי עוֹלָמִים אָמֵן
18 Timothy, my son, these are the instructions that I am giving you, in accordance with the words oncespoken over you by the prophets, so that in their light you may fight like a good soldier	18 אֶת־הַמִּצְוָה הַזֹּאת אֲנִי מְצַוְּךָ בְּנִי טִימוֹתִיּוֹס כְּפִי הַנְּבוּאוֹת הַקֹּדְמוֹת עָלֶיךָ שֶׁתִּלָּחֵם לְפִיהֶן הַמִּלְחָמָה הַטּוֹבָה
19 with faith and a good conscience for your weapons. Some people have put conscience aside andwrecked their faith in consequence.	19 לֶאֱחֹז בָּאֱמוּנָה וּבָרוּחַ הַטּוֹבָה אֲשֶׁר־יֵשׁ מֹאֲסִים בָּהּ וַתִּשָּׁבֵר אֳנִיַּת אֱמוּנָתָם
20 I mean men like Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may learnnot to be blasphemous.	20 וּמֵהֶם הוּמְנִיּוֹס וַאֲלֶכְּסַנְדֶּר אֲשֶׁר מְסַרְתִּים לַשָּׂטָן לְמַעַן יִוָּסְרוּ לְבִלְתִּי גַדֵּף עוֹד
	21 כִּי מֵעוֹלָם לֹא־יָצְאָה נְבוּאָה בִּרְצוֹן הָאָדָם כִּי אִם־בְּרוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר נְשָׂאָם דִּבְּרוּ אַנְשֵׁי אֱלֹהִים הַקְּדשִׁים
