1 Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the command of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus ourhope,	1 Pál, Istennek, a mi Üdvözítőnknek és Krisztus Jézusnak, a mi reménységünknek rendeletéből Jézus Krisztus apostola
2 to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from ChristJesus our Lord.	2 Timóteusnak, édes fiának a hitben. Kegyelem, irgalom és béke az Atyaistentől és Krisztus Jézustól, a mi Urunktól!
3 When I was setting out for Macedonia I urged you to stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not tospread wrong teaching	3 Amikor elindultam Makedóniába, arra kértelek, hogy maradj Efezusban, és parancsold meg egyeseknek, hogy ne tanítsanak másként,
4 or to give attention to myths and unending genealogies; these things only foster doubts instead offurthering God's plan which is founded on faith.	4 ne foglalkozzanak mesékkel és vég nélküli nemzetségtáblákkal, amelyek inkább vitatkozásokhoz vezetnek, mint az Isten szerint való rendhez, amely hiten alapszik.
5 The final goal at which this instruction aims is love, issuing from a pure heart, a clear conscience and asincere faith.	5 A parancs célja a tiszta szívből, a jó lelkiismeretből és a tettetés nélküli hitből származó szeretet.
6 Some people have missed the way to these things and turned to empty speculation,	6 Az illetők eltértek mindettől, és üres fecsegésre adták a fejüket.
7 trying to be teachers of the Law; but they understand neither the words they use nor the matters aboutwhich they make such strong assertions.	7 A törvény tanítói akarnak lenni, pedig nem is értik, amit mondanak és bizonygatnak.
8 We are wel aware that the Law is good, but only provided it is used legitimately,	8 Mi azonban tudjuk, hogy a törvény jó, ha a törvénynek megfelelően alkalmazzák:
9 on the understanding that laws are not framed for people who are upright. On the contrary, they are forcriminals and the insubordinate, for the irreligious and the wicked, for the sacrilegious and the godless; they arefor people who kil their fathers or mothers and for murderers,	9 tudva, hogy az igazra nem vonatkozik törvény, hanem csak a gonoszokra, engedetlenekre, istentelenekre, bűnösökre, vétkesekre, szentségtelenekre, apagyilkosokra, anyagyilkosokra, gyilkosokra,
10 for the promiscuous, homosexuals, kidnappers, for liars and for perjurers -- and for everything else thatis contrary to the sound teaching	10 paráznákra, férfiakkal fajtalankodókra, emberrablókra, hazugokra, hamisan esküvőkre, és arra, ami ezeken kívül még ellenkezik az egészséges tanítással,
11 that accords with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the gospel that was entrusted to me.	11 a boldog Isten dicsőségének rám bízott evangéliuma szerint.
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength. By cal ing me into his service he has judgedme trustworthy,	12 Hálát adok annak, aki erőt adott nekem, Krisztus Jézusnak, a mi Urunknak, hogy megbízhatónak ítélt, és erre a szolgálatra rendelt engem,
13 even though I used to be a blasphemer and a persecutor and contemptuous. Mercy, however, wasshown me, because while I lacked faith I acted in ignorance;	13 aki azelőtt káromló, üldöző és gyalázkodó voltam, de irgalmat találtam, mert hitetlenségemben tudatlanul cselekedtem.
14 but the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.	14 Sőt, valósággal elárasztott a mi Urunk kegyelme, a Krisztus Jézusban való hittel és szeretettel együtt.
15 Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the worldto save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them;	15 Igaz beszéd ez, s teljes hitelt érdemlő: azért jött el Krisztus Jézus erre a világra, hogy üdvözítse a bűnösöket. Ezek között az első én vagyok.
16 and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the leading exampleof his inexhaustible patience for al the other people who were later to trust in him for eternal life.	16 De éppen azért találtam irgalmasságot, hogy Krisztus Jézus rajtam, az elsőn mutassa meg egész hosszantűrését, okulásul azoknak, akik hinni fognak benne az örök életre.
17 To the eternal King, the undying, invisible and only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.	17 Tisztesség és dicsőség érte az örökkévalóság halhatatlan, láthatatlan Királyának, az egy Istennek, mindörökkön örökké! Ámen!
18 Timothy, my son, these are the instructions that I am giving you, in accordance with the words oncespoken over you by the prophets, so that in their light you may fight like a good soldier	18 Ezt a parancsot kötöm a lelkedre, Timóteus fiam, hivatkozva a rád vonatkozó, egykori jövendölésekre, hogy azokban bízva harcold a jó harcot,
19 with faith and a good conscience for your weapons. Some people have put conscience aside andwrecked their faith in consequence.	19 s tartsd meg a hitet és a jó lelkiismeretet, amelyet egyesek elvetettek, s így hajótörést szenvedtek a hitben.
20 I mean men like Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may learnnot to be blasphemous.	20 Ezek közé tartozik Himéneusz és Alexander, akiket átadtam a sátánnak, hadd tanulják meg, hogy ne káromkodjanak.
