1 Timothy 1

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the command of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus ourhope,	1 Paul, apôtre du Christ Jésus selon l'ordre de Dieu notre Sauveur et du Christ Jésus, notreespérance,
2 to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from ChristJesus our Lord.	2 à Timothée, mon véritable enfant dans la foi: grâce, miséricorde, paix, de par Dieu le Père etle Christ Jésus notre Seigneur.
3 When I was setting out for Macedonia I urged you to stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not tospread wrong teaching	3 Ainsi donc, en partant pour la Macédoine, je t'ai prié de demeurer à Ephèse, pour enjoindre àcertains de cesser d'enseigner des doctrines étrangères
4 or to give attention to myths and unending genealogies; these things only foster doubts instead offurthering God's plan which is founded on faith.	4 et de s'attacher à des fables et à des généalogies sans fin, plus propres à soulever de vainsproblèmes qu'à servir le dessein de Dieu fondé sur la foi.
5 The final goal at which this instruction aims is love, issuing from a pure heart, a clear conscience and asincere faith.	5 Cette injonction ne vise qu'à promouvoir la charité qui procède d'un coeur pur, d'une bonneconscience et d'une foi sans détours.
6 Some people have missed the way to these things and turned to empty speculation,	6 Pour avoir dévié de cette ligne, certains se sont fourvoyés en un creux verbiage;
7 trying to be teachers of the Law; but they understand neither the words they use nor the matters aboutwhich they make such strong assertions.	7 ils ont la prétention d'être des docteurs de la Loi, alors qu'ils ne savent ni ce qu'ils disent, ni dequoi ils se font les champions.
8 We are wel aware that the Law is good, but only provided it is used legitimately,	8 Certes, nous le savons, la Loi est bonne, si on en fait un usage légitime,
9 on the understanding that laws are not framed for people who are upright. On the contrary, they are forcriminals and the insubordinate, for the irreligious and the wicked, for the sacrilegious and the godless; they arefor people who kil their fathers or mothers and for murderers,	9 en sachant bien qu'elle n'a pas été instituée pour le juste, mais pour les insoumis et lesrebelles, les impies et les pécheurs, les sacrilèges et les profanateurs, les parricides et les matricides, lesassassins,
10 for the promiscuous, homosexuals, kidnappers, for liars and for perjurers -- and for everything else thatis contrary to the sound teaching	10 les impudiques, les homosexuels, les trafiquants d'hommes, les menteurs, les parjures, etpour tout ce qui s'oppose à la saine doctrine,
11 that accords with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the gospel that was entrusted to me.	11 celle qui est conforme à l'Evangile de la gloire du Dieu bienheureux, qui m'a été confié.
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength. By cal ing me into his service he has judgedme trustworthy,	12 Je rends grâce à celui qui m'a donné la force, le Christ Jésus, notre Seigneur, qui m'a jugéassez fidèle pour m'appeler à son service,
13 even though I used to be a blasphemer and a persecutor and contemptuous. Mercy, however, wasshown me, because while I lacked faith I acted in ignorance;	13 moi, naguère un blasphémateur, un persécuteur, un insulteur. Mais il m'a été fait miséricordeparce que j'agissais par ignorance, étranger à la foi;
14 but the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.	14 et la grâce de notre Seigneur a surabondé avec la foi et la charité qui est dans le Christ Jésus.
15 Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the worldto save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them;	15 Elle est sûre cette parole et digne d'une entière créance: le Christ Jésus est venu dans lemonde pour sauver les pécheurs, dont je suis, moi, le premier.
16 and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the leading exampleof his inexhaustible patience for al the other people who were later to trust in him for eternal life.	16 Et s'il m'a été fait miséricorde, c'est pour qu'en moi, le premier, Jésus Christ manifestât toutesa patience, faisant de moi un exemple pour ceux qui doivent croire en lui en vue de la vie éternelle.
17 To the eternal King, the undying, invisible and only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.	17 Au Roi des siècles, Dieu incorruptible, invisible, unique, honneur et gloire dans les sièclesdes siècles! Amen.
18 Timothy, my son, these are the instructions that I am giving you, in accordance with the words oncespoken over you by the prophets, so that in their light you may fight like a good soldier	18 Tel est l'avertissement que je t'adresse, Timothée, mon enfant, en accord avec les prophétiesjadis prononcées sur toi, afin que, pénétré de celles-ci, tu combattes le bon combat,
19 with faith and a good conscience for your weapons. Some people have put conscience aside andwrecked their faith in consequence.	19 possédant foi et bonne conscience; pour s'en être affranchis, certains ont fait naufrage dans lafoi;
20 I mean men like Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may learnnot to be blasphemous.	20 entre autres, Hyménée et Alexandre, que j'ai livrés à Satan pour leur apprendre à ne plusblasphémer.
