Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the command of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus ourhope,1 Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the authority of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope,
to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from ChristJesus our Lord.2 to Timothy, beloved son in the faith. Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.
When I was setting out for Macedonia I urged you to stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not tospread wrong teaching3 Now I asked you to remain at Ephesus, while I went into Macedonia, so that you would speak strongly against certain ones who have been teaching a different way,
or to give attention to myths and unending genealogies; these things only foster doubts instead offurthering God's plan which is founded on faith.4 against those who have been paying attention to fables and endless genealogies. These things present questions as if they were greater than the edification that is of God, which is in faith.
The final goal at which this instruction aims is love, issuing from a pure heart, a clear conscience and asincere faith.5 Now the goal of instruction is charity from a pure heart, and a good conscience, and an unfeigned faith.
Some people have missed the way to these things and turned to empty speculation,6 Certain persons, wandering away from these things, have been turned aside to empty babbling,
trying to be teachers of the Law; but they understand neither the words they use nor the matters aboutwhich they make such strong assertions.7 desiring to be teachers of the law, but understanding neither the things that they themselves are saying, nor what they are affirming about these things.
We are wel aware that the Law is good, but only provided it is used legitimately,8 But we know that the law is good, if one makes use of it properly.
on the understanding that laws are not framed for people who are upright. On the contrary, they are forcriminals and the insubordinate, for the irreligious and the wicked, for the sacrilegious and the godless; they arefor people who kil their fathers or mothers and for murderers,9 Knowing this, that the law was not set in place for the just, but for the unjust and the insubordinate, for the impious and sinners, for the wicked and the defiled, for those who commit patricide, matricide, or homicide,
for the promiscuous, homosexuals, kidnappers, for liars and for perjurers -- and for everything else thatis contrary to the sound teaching10 for fornicators, for males who sleep with males, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,
that accords with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the gospel that was entrusted to me.11 which is in accord with the Gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the Gospel which has been entrusted to me.
I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength. By cal ing me into his service he has judgedme trustworthy,12 I give thanks to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he has considered me faithful, placing me in the ministry,
even though I used to be a blasphemer and a persecutor and contemptuous. Mercy, however, wasshown me, because while I lacked faith I acted in ignorance;13 though previously I was a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and contemptuous. But then I obtained the mercy of God. For I had been acting ignorantly, in unbelief.
but the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.14 And so the grace of our Lord has abounded greatly, with the faith and love that is in Christ Jesus.
Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the worldto save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them;15 It is a faithful saying, and worthy of acceptance by everyone, that Christ Jesus came into this world to bring salvation to sinners, among whom I am first.
and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the leading exampleof his inexhaustible patience for al the other people who were later to trust in him for eternal life.16 But it was for this reason that I obtained mercy, so that in me as first, Christ Jesus would display all patience, for the instruction of those who would believe in him unto eternal life.
To the eternal King, the undying, invisible and only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.17 So then, to the King of ages, to the immortal, invisible, solitary God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
Timothy, my son, these are the instructions that I am giving you, in accordance with the words oncespoken over you by the prophets, so that in their light you may fight like a good soldier18 This precept I commend to you, my son Timothy, in accord with the prophets who preceded you: that you serve among them like a soldier in a good war,
with faith and a good conscience for your weapons. Some people have put conscience aside andwrecked their faith in consequence.19 holding to faith and good conscience, against those who, by rejecting these things, have made a shipwreck of the faith.
I mean men like Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may learnnot to be blasphemous.20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they may learn not to blaspheme.
