1 Timothy 1

1 Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the command of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus ourhope,	1 Paolo, apostolo di Cristo Gesù per comando di Dio nostro salvatore e di Cristo Gesù nostra speranza,
2 to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from ChristJesus our Lord.	2 a Timòteo, vero figlio mio nella fede: grazia, misericordia e pace da Dio Padre e da Cristo Gesù Signore nostro.
3 When I was setting out for Macedonia I urged you to stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not tospread wrong teaching	3 Partendo per la Macedonia, ti raccomandai di rimanere a Èfeso perché tu ordinassi a taluni di non insegnare dottrine diverse
4 or to give attention to myths and unending genealogies; these things only foster doubts instead offurthering God's plan which is founded on faith.	4 e di non aderire a favole e a genealogie interminabili, le quali sono più adatte a vane discussioni che non al disegno di Dio, che si attua nella fede.
5 The final goal at which this instruction aims is love, issuing from a pure heart, a clear conscience and asincere faith.	5 Lo scopo del comando è però la carità, che nasce da un cuore puro, da una buona coscienza e da una fede sincera.
6 Some people have missed the way to these things and turned to empty speculation,	6 Deviando da questa linea, alcuni si sono perduti in discorsi senza senso,
7 trying to be teachers of the Law; but they understand neither the words they use nor the matters aboutwhich they make such strong assertions.	7 pretendendo di essere dottori della Legge, mentre non capiscono né quello che dicono né ciò di cui sono tanto sicuri.
8 We are wel aware that the Law is good, but only provided it is used legitimately,	8 Noi sappiamo che la Legge è buona, purché se ne faccia un uso legittimo,
9 on the understanding that laws are not framed for people who are upright. On the contrary, they are forcriminals and the insubordinate, for the irreligious and the wicked, for the sacrilegious and the godless; they arefor people who kil their fathers or mothers and for murderers,	9 nella convinzione che la Legge non è fatta per il giusto, ma per gli iniqui e i ribelli, per gli empi e i peccatori, per i sacrìleghi e i profanatori, per i parricidi e i matricidi, per gli assassini,
10 for the promiscuous, homosexuals, kidnappers, for liars and for perjurers -- and for everything else thatis contrary to the sound teaching	10 i fornicatori, i sodomiti, i mercanti di uomini, i bugiardi, gli spergiuri e per ogni altra cosa contraria alla sana dottrina,
11 that accords with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the gospel that was entrusted to me.	11 secondo il vangelo della gloria del beato Dio, che mi è stato affidato.
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength. By cal ing me into his service he has judgedme trustworthy,	12 Rendo grazie a colui che mi ha reso forte, Cristo Gesù Signore nostro, perché mi ha giudicato degno di fiducia mettendo al suo servizio me,
13 even though I used to be a blasphemer and a persecutor and contemptuous. Mercy, however, wasshown me, because while I lacked faith I acted in ignorance;	13 che prima ero un bestemmiatore, un persecutore e un violento. Ma mi è stata usata misericordia, perché agivo per ignoranza, lontano dalla fede,
14 but the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.	14 e così la grazia del Signore nostro ha sovrabbondato insieme alla fede e alla carità che è in Cristo Gesù.
15 Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the worldto save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them;	15 Questa parola è degna di fede e di essere accolta da tutti: Cristo Gesù è venuto nel mondo per salvare i peccatori, il primo dei quali sono io.
16 and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the leading exampleof his inexhaustible patience for al the other people who were later to trust in him for eternal life.	16 Ma appunto per questo ho ottenuto misericordia, perché Cristo Gesù ha voluto in me, per primo, dimostrare tutta quanta la sua magnanimità, e io fossi di esempio a quelli che avrebbero creduto in lui per avere la vita eterna.
17 To the eternal King, the undying, invisible and only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.	17 Al Re dei secoli, incorruttibile, invisibile e unico Dio, onore e gloria nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.
18 Timothy, my son, these are the instructions that I am giving you, in accordance with the words oncespoken over you by the prophets, so that in their light you may fight like a good soldier	18 Questo è l’ordine che ti do, figlio mio Timòteo, in accordo con le profezie già fatte su di te, perché, fondato su di esse, tu combatta la buona battaglia,
19 with faith and a good conscience for your weapons. Some people have put conscience aside andwrecked their faith in consequence.	19 conservando la fede e una buona coscienza. Alcuni, infatti, avendola rinnegata, hanno fatto naufragio nella fede;
20 I mean men like Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may learnnot to be blasphemous.	20 tra questi Imeneo e Alessandro, che ho consegnato a Satana, perché imparino a non bestemmiare.
