Joshua 10

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Now, it happened that Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem, learned that Joshua had conquered Ai and putthe town under the curse of destruction, treating Ai and its king as he had already treated Jericho and its king;and also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living with them.	1 Quando Adoni-Zedek, re di Gerusalemme, venne a sapere che Giosuè aveva preso Ai e l'aveva votata allo sterminio, e che, come aveva trattato Gerico e il suo re, così aveva trattato Ai e il suo re, e che gli abitanti di Gabaon avevano fatto pace con i figli d'Israele e si trovavano in mezzo ad essi,
2 There was consternation at this, since Gibeon was as important a town as any of the royal townsthemselves (it was larger than Ai), while al its citizens were fighting men.	2 ne fu terrorizzato, perché Gabaon era una città grande come una capitale ed era più grande di Ai e i suoi uomini erano tutti valorosi.
3 Consequently, Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king ofJarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon,	3 Allora Adoni-Zedek, re di Gerusalemme, mandò a dire a Oam, re di Ebron, a Piream, re di Iarmut, a Iafia, re di Lachis, e a Debir, re di Eglon:
4 'Join me up here and help me to conquer Gibeon, since it has made peace with Joshua and theIsraelites.'	4 "Salite fin quassù da me e aiutatemi ad espugnare Gabaon, perché ha fatto pace con Giosuè e con i figli d'Israele".
5 The five Amorite kings joined forces and went up there, that is, the king of Jerusalem, the king ofHebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon, they and al their armies; laying siege toGibeon, they attacked it.	5 Riunitisi quindi i cinque re amorrei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon, salirono con tutte le loro forze, si accamparono davanti a Gabaon e l'assalirono.
6 The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, 'Do not desert your servants; come uphere quickly to save us and help us, since al the Amorite kings living in the highlands have al ied themselvesagainst us.'	6 I Gabaoniti allora mandarono a dire a Giosuè, all'accampamento a Gàlgala: "Non ritrarre il tuo aiuto ai tuoi servi, sali presto fino a noi e salvaci con il tuo aiuto, perché si sono coalizzati contro di noi tutti i re amorrei che abitano sulle montagne".
7 Joshua came up from Gilgal, he, al the fighting men and all the bravest of his army.	7 Giosuè salì allora da Gàlgala, lui insieme a tutti i suoi uomini atti alla guerra, tutti i guerrieri valorosi.
8 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of these people; I have put them at your mercy; not one ofthem wil put up any resistance.'	8 Il Signore disse a Giosuè: "Non aver paura di loro, perché io te li do nelle mani; nessuno di quelli potrà resisterti".
9 Having marched from Gilgal throughout the night, Joshua caught them unawares.	9 Giosuè piombò loro addosso all'improvviso: tutta la notte aveva continuato a salire da Gàlgala.
10 Yahweh threw them into disorder at the sight of Israel, defeating them completely at Gibeon;furthermore, he pursued them by way of the Descent of Beth-Horon and harassed them as far as Azekah (andas far as Makkedah).	10 Il Signore li mise in confusione davanti a Israele, infliggendo loro una grave sconfitta presso Gabaon; poi li inseguì verso la salita di Bet-Oron, continuando a percuoterli fino ad Azeka e a Makkeda.
11 And as they fled from Israel down the Descent of Beth-Horon, Yahweh hurled huge hailstones fromheaven on them all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died under the hailstones than under theswords of the Israelites.	11 Quando nella loro fuga davanti a Israele si trovavano nella discesa di Bet-Oron, il Signore scagliò su di loro dal cielo pietre così grosse fino ad Azeka, che quelli morivano, sì che furono più quelli che morirono per quella grandinata di pietre che non quelli che uccisero di spada i figli d'Israele.
12 Joshua then spoke to Yahweh, the day Yahweh delivered the Amorites to the Israelites. In thepresence of Israel, Joshua said: Sun, stand stil over Gibeon, and, moon, you too, over the Vale of Aijalon!	12 In quel tempo, quando cioè il Signore dette gli Amorrei in balia dei figli d'Israele, Giosuè parlò al Signore, esprimendosi così alla presenza d'Israele: "O sole, fermati su Gabaon, e tu, o luna, nella valle di Aialon".
13 And the sun stood stil , and the moon halted, until the people had taken vengeance on their enemies.Is this not written in the Book of the Just? The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting foralmost a whole day.	13 E il sole si fermò, e la luna ristette, finché il popolo si fu vendicato dei suoi nemici. Non sta forse scritto nel Libro del Giusto: "Il sole rimase fermo in mezzo al cielo e non si affrettò a tramontare quasi tutto un giorno?
14 There was never a day like that before or since, when Yahweh obeyed the voice of a man -- forYahweh was fighting for Israel.	14 Non vi fu mai, né prima né dopo, un giorno come quello, in cui il Signore abbia esaudito la preghiera di un uomo; evidentemente il Signore combatté per Israele!".
15 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then went back to the camp at Gilgal.	15 Dopodiché Giosuè e con lui tutto Israele tornarono all'accampamento a Gàlgala.
16 As regards the five kings, these had fled and hidden in the cave of Makkedah,	16 Quei cinque re fuggirono e andarono a nascondersi in una caverna presso Makkeda.
17 and news of this was brought to Joshua. 'The five kings have been found hiding in the cave atMakkedah.'	17 Fu riferito infatti a Giosuè: "Sono stati trovati i cinque re nascosti nella grotta di Makkeda".
18 Joshua said, 'Rol great stones over the mouth of the cave and post men there to keep guard.	18 Egli disse: "Rotolate grosse pietre all'imbocco della caverna e mettetevi degli uomini per sorvegliarli.
19 You yourselves, do not stay there doing nothing; pursue the enemy, cut off their line of retreat and donot let them enter their towns, for Yahweh your God has put them at your mercy.'	19 Voi intanto non vi fermate, ma continuate ad inseguire i vostri nemici, prendendoli alle spalle, non permettendo loro così di rientrare nelle loro città, perché il Signore, vostro Dio, li ha messi nelle vostre mani".
20 When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great defeat on them, to the point ofdestroying them, those who had escaped alive took refuge in their fortresses.	20 Quando Giosuè e i figli d'Israele ebbero finito di massacrarli con una strage tale da sterminarli, ed i superstiti di essi fuggendo si salvarono entrando nelle città fortificate,
21 The people came back to Joshua's camp at Makkedah; they were all safe and sound, and no onedared to attempt anything against the Israelites.	21 tutto il popolo tornò sano e salvo all'accampamento presso Giosuè, in pace. Nessuno mosse più la lingua contro i figli d'Israele.
22 Joshua then said, 'Clear the mouth of the cave and bring the five kings out to me.'	22 Allora Giosuè disse: "Aprite l'ingresso della caverna e, tratti fuori dalla caverna quei cinque re, conducetemeli".
23 They did so, and brought the five kings out of the cave to take them to him: the king of Jerusalem, theking of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon.	23 Così fecero, e condussero a lui i cinque re fuori della caverna, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon.
24 When these kings had been brought out, Joshua assembled al the men of Israel and said to thechiefs of the warriors who had fought with him, 'Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings!'They came forward and put their feet on their necks.	24 Quando quei re furono condotti a Giosuè, questi radunò tutto Israele e disse ai capi dell'esercito che li avevano accompagnati: "Avvicinatevi e mettete i vostri piedi sul collo di questi re". Ed essi si avvicinarono e posero i loro piedi sul collo di quelli.
25 'Be fearless and undaunted,' Joshua went on, 'be strong and stand firm, for this is how Yahweh wildeal with al the enemies you fight.'	25 Disse quindi loro Giosuè: "Non temete e non perdetevi di coraggio, ma siate forti e valorosi, perché così il Signore tratterà tutti i vostri nemici, contro i quali dovrete combattere".
26 With this, Joshua struck and killed them and had them hanged on five trees; they hung there tillevening.	26 Dopo ciò Giosuè li fece colpire ed uccidere e li fece appendere a cinque pali sui quali rimasero appesi fino alla sera.
27 At the hour of sunset, on Joshua's orders, they were taken down from the trees and thrown into thecave where they had been hiding. Great stones were laid over the mouth of the cave, and these are stil there tothis very day.	27 Al tramontar del sole, Giosuè comandò di calarli giù dai pali e li fece gettare nella grotta in cui essi si erano nascosti, all'imboccatura della quale posero delle grosse pietre, che vi si trovano anche oggi.
28 The same day Joshua captured Makkedah, putting it and its king to the sword; he delivered themover to the curse of destruction, with every living creature there, and let no one escape, and he treated the kingof Makkedah as he had treated the king of Jericho.	28 In quel giorno Giosuè prese Makkeda e la passò a fil di spada con il suo re, votò all'interdetto quella e tutti i suoi abitanti, senza lasciare che alcuno scampasse e trattò il re di Makkeda come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.
29 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it	29 Poi Giosuè e quanti erano con lui passarono da Makkeda a Libna e assalirono Libna.
30 and Yahweh put this, too, and its king at Israel's mercy; and Israel put every living creature there tothe sword, and left none alive, and treated its king like the king of Jericho.	30 Il Signore mise nelle mani d'Israele anche questa città e il suo re, facendola passare a fil di spada con tutti quelli che vi abitavano, non lasciandovi alcun superstite e trattò il suo re come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.
31 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Libnah to Lachish and besieged it and attacked it.	31 Quindi Giosuè con tutto Israele da Libna passò a Lachis, che assediò e prese d'assalto.
32 Yahweh put Lachish at Israel's mercy, and Israel took it on the second day and put it and every livingcreature in it to the sword, as they had treated Libnah.	32 Il Signore lasciò Lachis in potere d'Israele, che la prese il secondo giorno e la passò a fil di spada con tutti i suoi abitanti, tutto come aveva fatto a Libna.
33 Horam king of Gezer then marched up to help Lachish, but Joshua beat him and his people until notone was left alive.	33 In quel tempo Oram, re di Ghezer, salì in aiuto di Lachis, ma Giosuè lo batté insieme al suo esercito, sì da non lasciare alcun superstite.
34 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Lachish to Eglon. They besieged it and attacked it.	34 Quindi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, passò da Lachis a Eglon, che assediarono e assalirono.
35 The same day they took it and put it to the sword. That day he delivered over to the curse ofdestruction every living creature there, treating it as he had treated Lachish.	35 La occuparono quello stesso giorno e la passarono a fil di spada, votando quello stesso giorno allo sterminio tutti quelli che vi erano; tutto come era stato fatto con Lachis.
36 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on up from Eglon to Hebron. They attacked it,	36 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, salì da Eglon a Ebron e l'attaccò.
37 took it and put it to the sword, with its king, its dependencies and every living creature in it. As he hadtreated Eglon, so here, he left no one alive. He delivered it over to the curse of destruction, with every livingcreature in it.	37 Presala, la passarono a fil di spada con il suo re e le sue città e tutti gli abitanti, non lasciando un superstite, tutto come aveva fatto con Eglon e votò allo sterminio essa e tutti quelli che vi abitavano.
38 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then turned back on Debir and attacked it.	38 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, si volse verso Debir e l'attaccò.
39 He took it and its king and al the places belonging to it; they put them to the sword, and every livingcreature there they delivered over to the curse of destruction. He left no one alive. As he had treated Hebron, ashe had treated Libnah and its king, so he treated Debir and its king.	39 Prese la città, il suo re e tutte le sue località e passò a fil di spada e votò allo sterminio tutti i suoi abitanti, non lasciando alcun superstite; come aveva agito con Ebron, così agì con Debir e il suo re, come aveva trattato anche Libna e il suo re.
40 Thus Joshua subjugated the whole country: the highlands, the Negeb, the lowlands and wateredfoothil s, and al their kings. He left not one survivor and put every living thing under the curse of destruction, asYahweh, God of Israel, had commanded.	40 Così Giosuè conquistò tutta la regione: la montagna, il Negheb, il bassopiano, le pendici e tutti i loro re. Non lasciò alcun superstite e votò allo sterminio ogni vivente, come aveva ordinato il Signore, Dio d'Israele.
41 Joshua conquered them from Kadesh-Barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far asGibeon.	41 Giosuè li sterminò da Kades-Barnea fino a Gaza, e tutta la regione di Gosen fino a Gabaon.
42 Al these kings and their territory Joshua captured in a single campaign, because Yahweh, God ofIsrael, fought for Israel.	42 In una sola campagna Giosuè prese tutti quei re e il loro territorio, perché il Signore, Dio d'Israele, combatté per Israele.
43 And then Joshua, and al Israel with him, went back to the camp at Gilgal.	43 Alla fine Giosuè ritornò all'accampamento in Gàlgala.
