Joshua 10

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Now, it happened that Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem, learned that Joshua had conquered Ai and putthe town under the curse of destruction, treating Ai and its king as he had already treated Jericho and its king;and also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living with them.	1 Or, il advint qu'Adoni-Cédeq, roi de Jérusalem, apprit que Josué s'était emparé de Aï et l'avait vouéeà l'anathème, traitant Aï et son roi comme il avait traité Jéricho et son roi, et que les habitants de Gabaôn avaientfait la paix avec Israël et demeuraient au milieu de lui.
2 There was consternation at this, since Gibeon was as important a town as any of the royal townsthemselves (it was larger than Ai), while al its citizens were fighting men.	2 On en fut terrifié, car Gabaôn était une ville aussi grande que l'une des villes royales (elle était plusgrande que Aï), et tous ses citoyens étaient des guerriers.
3 Consequently, Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king ofJarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon,	3 Alors Adoni-Cédeq, roi de Jérusalem, envoya dire à Hoham, roi d'Hébron, à Piréam, roi de Yarmut,à Yaphia, roi de Lakish, et à Debir, roi d'Eglôn:
4 'Join me up here and help me to conquer Gibeon, since it has made peace with Joshua and theIsraelites.'	4 "Montez donc vers moi pour m'aider à battre Gabaôn, parce qu'elle a fait la paix avec Josué et lesIsraélites."
5 The five Amorite kings joined forces and went up there, that is, the king of Jerusalem, the king ofHebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon, they and al their armies; laying siege toGibeon, they attacked it.	5 Ayant opéré leur jonction, les cinq rois montèrent, à savoir le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roide Yarmut, le roi de Lakish et le roi d'Eglôn, eux et toutes leurs troupes; ils assiégèrent Gabaôn et l'attaquèrent.
6 The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, 'Do not desert your servants; come uphere quickly to save us and help us, since al the Amorite kings living in the highlands have al ied themselvesagainst us.'	6 Les gens de Gabaôn envoyèrent dire à Josué, au camp de Gilgal: "Ne délaisse pas tes serviteurs,hâte-toi de monter jusqu'à nous pour nous sauver et nous secourir, car tous les rois amorites qui habitent lamontagne se sont coalisés contre nous."
7 Joshua came up from Gilgal, he, al the fighting men and all the bravest of his army.	7 Josué monta de Gilgal, lui, tous les gens de guerre et toute l'élite de l'armée.
8 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of these people; I have put them at your mercy; not one ofthem wil put up any resistance.'	8 Yahvé dit à Josué: "Ne les crains pas, je les ai livrés entre tes mains, nul d'entre eux ne te résistera."
9 Having marched from Gilgal throughout the night, Joshua caught them unawares.	9 Josué arriva sur eux à l'improviste, après avoir marché toute la nuit depuis Gilgal.
10 Yahweh threw them into disorder at the sight of Israel, defeating them completely at Gibeon;furthermore, he pursued them by way of the Descent of Beth-Horon and harassed them as far as Azekah (andas far as Makkedah).	10 Yahvé les mit en déroute, en présence d'Israël, et leur infligea à Gabaôn une rude défaite; il lespoursuivit même sur le chemin de la pente de Bet-Horôn et les battit jusqu'à Azéqa (et jusqu'à Maqqéda).
11 And as they fled from Israel down the Descent of Beth-Horon, Yahweh hurled huge hailstones fromheaven on them all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died under the hailstones than under theswords of the Israelites.	11 Or, tandis qu'ils fuyaient devant Israël à la descente de Bet-Horôn, Yahvé lança du ciel sur eux,jusqu'à Azéqa, d'énormes grêlons, et ils moururent. Il en mourut plus sous les grêlons que sous le tranchant del'épée des Israélites.
12 Joshua then spoke to Yahweh, the day Yahweh delivered the Amorites to the Israelites. In thepresence of Israel, Joshua said: Sun, stand stil over Gibeon, and, moon, you too, over the Vale of Aijalon!	12 C'est alors que Josué s'adressa à Yahvé, en ce jour où Yahvé livra les Amorites aux Israélites. Josuédit en présence d'Israël: "Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gabaôn, et toi, lune, sur la vallée d'Ayyalôn!"
13 And the sun stood stil , and the moon halted, until the people had taken vengeance on their enemies.Is this not written in the Book of the Just? The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting foralmost a whole day.	13 Et le soleil s'arrêta, et la lune se tint immobile jusqu'à ce que le peuple se fût vengé de ses ennemis.Cela n'est-il pas écrit dans le livre du Juste? Le soleil se tint immobile au milieu du ciel et près d'un jour entierretarda son coucher.
14 There was never a day like that before or since, when Yahweh obeyed the voice of a man -- forYahweh was fighting for Israel.	14 Il n'y a pas eu de journée pareille, ni avant ni depuis, où Yahvé ait obéi à la voix d'un homme. C'estque Yahvé combattait pour Israël.
15 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then went back to the camp at Gilgal.	15 Josué, et avec lui tout Israël, regagna le camp de Gilgal.
16 As regards the five kings, these had fled and hidden in the cave of Makkedah,	16 Quant à ces cinq rois, ils s'étaient enfuis et s'étaient cachés dans la caverne de Maqqéda.
17 and news of this was brought to Joshua. 'The five kings have been found hiding in the cave atMakkedah.'	17 On vint en informer Josué: "Les cinq rois, lui dit-on, viennent d'être découverts cachés dans lacaverne de Maqqéda."
18 Joshua said, 'Rol great stones over the mouth of the cave and post men there to keep guard.	18 Josué dit: "Roulez de grosses pierres à l'entrée de la caverne et postez contre elle des hommes poury veiller.
19 You yourselves, do not stay there doing nothing; pursue the enemy, cut off their line of retreat and donot let them enter their towns, for Yahweh your God has put them at your mercy.'	19 Et vous, ne restez pas immobiles, poursuivez vos ennemis, coupez-leur la retraite et ne les laissezpas entrer dans leurs villes, car Yahvé votre Dieu les a livrés entre vos mains."
20 When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great defeat on them, to the point ofdestroying them, those who had escaped alive took refuge in their fortresses.	20 Quand Josué et les Israélites eurent achevé de leur infliger une très grande défaite jusqu'à lesexterminer, tous ceux qui avaient réchappé vivants entrèrent dans les places fortes.
21 The people came back to Joshua's camp at Makkedah; they were all safe and sound, and no onedared to attempt anything against the Israelites.	21 Tout le peuple revint au camp sain et sauf, auprès de Josué à Maqqéda, et personne n'osa rien fairecontre les Israélites.
22 Joshua then said, 'Clear the mouth of the cave and bring the five kings out to me.'	22 Josué dit alors: "Dégagez l'entrée de la caverne et faites-en sortir ces cinq rois pour me les amener."
23 They did so, and brought the five kings out of the cave to take them to him: the king of Jerusalem, theking of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon.	23 On fit ainsi et l'on fit sortir les cinq rois de la caverne pour les lui amener: le roi de Jérusalem, le roid'Hébron, le roi de Yarmut, le roi de Lakish et le roi d'Eglôn.
24 When these kings had been brought out, Joshua assembled al the men of Israel and said to thechiefs of the warriors who had fought with him, 'Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings!'They came forward and put their feet on their necks.	24 Lorsqu'on eut fait sortir ces rois, Josué appela tous les hommes d'Israël et dit aux officiers des gensde guerre qui l'avaient accompagné: "Approchez et mettez le pied sur la nuque de ces rois." Ils s'avancèrent etleur mirent le pied sur la nuque.
25 'Be fearless and undaunted,' Joshua went on, 'be strong and stand firm, for this is how Yahweh wildeal with al the enemies you fight.'	25 "Soyez sans crainte et sans frayeur, leur dit Josué, mais soyez forts et tenez bon, car c'est ainsi queYahvé traitera tous les ennemis que vous aurez à combattre."
26 With this, Joshua struck and killed them and had them hanged on five trees; they hung there tillevening.	26 Après quoi, Josué les frappa à mort et les fit pendre à cinq arbres auxquels ils restèrent suspendusjusqu'au soir.
27 At the hour of sunset, on Joshua's orders, they were taken down from the trees and thrown into thecave where they had been hiding. Great stones were laid over the mouth of the cave, and these are stil there tothis very day.	27 A l'heure du coucher du soleil, sur un ordre de Josué, on les dépendit des arbres et on les jeta dansla caverne où ils s'étaient cachés. De grandes pierres furent dressées contre l'entrée de la caverne, elles y sontrestées jusqu'à ce jour même.
28 The same day Joshua captured Makkedah, putting it and its king to the sword; he delivered themover to the curse of destruction, with every living creature there, and let no one escape, and he treated the kingof Makkedah as he had treated the king of Jericho.	28 Le même jour, Josué se rendit maître de Maqqéda et la fit passer, ainsi que son roi, au fil de l'épée:il les voua à l'anathème avec tout ce qui se trouvait là de vivant, sans laisser échapper personne, et traita le roi deMaqqéda comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.
29 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it	29 Josué, avec tout Israël, passa de Maqqéda à Libna, qu'il attaqua.
30 and Yahweh put this, too, and its king at Israel's mercy; and Israel put every living creature there tothe sword, and left none alive, and treated its king like the king of Jericho.	30 Yahvé la livra aussi, avec son roi, entre les mains d'Israël qui la fit passer au fil de l'épée avec toutce qui se trouvait de vivant; il n'y laissa pas un survivant. Il traita son roi comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.
31 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Libnah to Lachish and besieged it and attacked it.	31 Josué, avec tout Israël, passa de Libna à Lakish, qu'il assiégea et attaqua.
32 Yahweh put Lachish at Israel's mercy, and Israel took it on the second day and put it and every livingcreature in it to the sword, as they had treated Libnah.	32 Yahvé livra Lakish entre les mains d'Israël qui s'en empara le second jour et la fit passer au fil del'épée avec tout ce qui s'y trouvait de vivant, tout comme il avait agi pour Libna.
33 Horam king of Gezer then marched up to help Lachish, but Joshua beat him and his people until notone was left alive.	33 C'est alors que le roi de Gézer, Horam, monta pour secourir Lakish, mais Josué le battit, ainsi queson peuple, jusqu'à ce qu'il ne lui laissât pas un survivant.
34 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Lachish to Eglon. They besieged it and attacked it.	34 Josué, avec tout Israël, passa de Lakish à Eglôn. Ils l'assiégèrent et l'attaquèrent.
35 The same day they took it and put it to the sword. That day he delivered over to the curse ofdestruction every living creature there, treating it as he had treated Lachish.	35 Ils s'en emparèrent le jour même et la firent passer au fil de l'épée. Il voua à l'anathème, en ce jour-là, tout ce qui s'y trouvait de vivant, tout comme il avait agi pour Lakish.
36 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on up from Eglon to Hebron. They attacked it,	36 Josué, avec tout Israël, monta d'Eglôn à Hébron, et ils l'attaquèrent.
37 took it and put it to the sword, with its king, its dependencies and every living creature in it. As he hadtreated Eglon, so here, he left no one alive. He delivered it over to the curse of destruction, with every livingcreature in it.	37 Ils s'en emparèrent et la firent passer au fil de l'épée, ainsi que son roi, toutes les localités qui endépendaient et tout ce qui s'y trouvait de vivant. Il ne laissa pas un survivant, tout comme il avait agi pour Eglôn.Il la voua à l'anathème, ainsi que tout ce qui s'y trouvait de vivant.
38 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then turned back on Debir and attacked it.	38 Alors Josué, avec tout Israël, retourna vers Debir et l'attaqua.
39 He took it and its king and al the places belonging to it; they put them to the sword, and every livingcreature there they delivered over to the curse of destruction. He left no one alive. As he had treated Hebron, ashe had treated Libnah and its king, so he treated Debir and its king.	39 Il s'en empara avec son roi et avec toutes les localités qui en dépendaient; ils les firent passer au filde l'épée et vouèrent à l'anathème tout ce qui s'y trouvait de vivant; il ne laissa pas un survivant. Comme il avaittraité Hébron, Josué traita Debir et son roi, tout comme il avait traité Libna et son roi.
40 Thus Joshua subjugated the whole country: the highlands, the Negeb, the lowlands and wateredfoothil s, and al their kings. He left not one survivor and put every living thing under the curse of destruction, asYahweh, God of Israel, had commanded.	40 Ainsi Josué soumit tout ce pays, à savoir: la Montagne, le Négeb, le Bas-Pays et les pentes arrosées,avec tous leurs rois. Il ne laissa pas un survivant et voua tout être vivant à l'anathème, comme Yahvé, le Dieud'Israël, l'avait ordonné;
41 Joshua conquered them from Kadesh-Barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far asGibeon.	41 Josué les battit depuis Cadès-Barné jusqu'à Gaza, et toute la région de Goshèn jusqu'à Gabaôn.
42 Al these kings and their territory Joshua captured in a single campaign, because Yahweh, God ofIsrael, fought for Israel.	42 Tous ces rois avec leur territoire, Josué s'en empara en une seule fois, parce que Yahvé, le Dieud'Israël, combattait pour Israël.
43 And then Joshua, and al Israel with him, went back to the camp at Gilgal.	43 Puis Josué, avec tout Israël, revint au camp de Gilgal.
