Joshua 10

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Now, it happened that Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem, learned that Joshua had conquered Ai and putthe town under the curse of destruction, treating Ai and its king as he had already treated Jericho and its king;and also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living with them.	1 Adonisedec, rey de Jerusalén, se enteró de que Josué se había apoderado de Ai y la había consagrado al exterminio, tratando a Ai y a su rey como antes había tratado a Jericó y a su rey. También se enteró de que los gabonitas habían hecho las paces con Israel y se les habían sometido.
2 There was consternation at this, since Gibeon was as important a town as any of the royal townsthemselves (it was larger than Ai), while al its citizens were fighting men.	2 Esto le produjo un gran temor, porque Gabaón era tan importante como una ciudad real y más grande aún que Ai. Además, todos sus habitantes eran aguerridos.
3 Consequently, Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king ofJarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon,	3 Entonces Adonisedec, rey de Jerusalén, hizo llegar a Hohán, rey de Hebrón, a Pirán, rey de Iarmut, a Iafia, rey de Laquís, y a Debir, rey de Eglón, el siguiente mensaje:
4 'Join me up here and help me to conquer Gibeon, since it has made peace with Joshua and theIsraelites.'	4 «Vengan conmigo y derrotaremos a Gabaón, porque ellos han hecho las paces con Josué y con los israelitas».
5 The five Amorite kings joined forces and went up there, that is, the king of Jerusalem, the king ofHebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon, they and al their armies; laying siege toGibeon, they attacked it.	5 Una vez reunidos, los cinco reyes amorreos –los reyes de Jerusalén, de Hebrón, de Iarmut, de Laquís y de Eglón– marcharon con sus tropas, acamparon frente a Gabaón, y se dispusieron a atacarla.
6 The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, 'Do not desert your servants; come uphere quickly to save us and help us, since al the Amorite kings living in the highlands have al ied themselvesagainst us.'	6 Entonces los gabaonitas mandaron decir a Josué, que estaba en el campamento de Guilgal: «No dejes solos a tus servidores. Ven a salvarnos lo antes posible. Ayúdanos, porque todos los reyes amorreos que habitan en la montaña se han reunido contra nosotros».
7 Joshua came up from Gilgal, he, al the fighting men and all the bravest of his army.	7 Josué subió desde Guilgal con todos los combatientes y con todos los guerreros valerosos,
8 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of these people; I have put them at your mercy; not one ofthem wil put up any resistance.'	8 y el Señor le dijo: «No les temas, porque yo los he puesto en tus manos; ninguno de ellos te podrá resistir».
9 Having marched from Gilgal throughout the night, Joshua caught them unawares.	9 Después de marchar toda la noche desde Guilgal, Josué cayó sobre ellos sorpresivamente.
10 Yahweh threw them into disorder at the sight of Israel, defeating them completely at Gibeon;furthermore, he pursued them by way of the Descent of Beth-Horon and harassed them as far as Azekah (andas far as Makkedah).	10 Y el Señor hizo que huyeran despavoridos delante de Israel, de manera que este les infligió una gran derrota en Gabaón. Luego los persiguieron en dirección a la subida de Bet Jorón, y continuaron exterminándolos hasta Azecá y Maquedá.
11 And as they fled from Israel down the Descent of Beth-Horon, Yahweh hurled huge hailstones fromheaven on them all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died under the hailstones than under theswords of the Israelites.	11 Mientras huían delante de Israel –precisamente cuando estaban en la bajada de Bet Jorón– el Señor arrojó sobre ellos desde el cielo, hasta la altura de Azecá, unas piedras tan grandes que les provocaban la muerte. Fueron más los que murieron a causa del granizo que los que mató Israel al filo de la espada.
12 Joshua then spoke to Yahweh, the day Yahweh delivered the Amorites to the Israelites. In thepresence of Israel, Joshua said: Sun, stand stil over Gibeon, and, moon, you too, over the Vale of Aijalon!	12 Aquella vez, cuando el Señor puso a los amorreos en manos de los israelitas, Josué se dirigió al Señor y exclamó, en presencia de Israel: «Detente, sol, en Gabaón, y tú, luna, en el valle de Aialón».
13 And the sun stood stil , and the moon halted, until the people had taken vengeance on their enemies.Is this not written in the Book of the Just? The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting foralmost a whole day.	13 Y el sol se detuvo, y la luna permaneció inmóvil, hasta que el pueblo se vengó de sus enemigos. ¿No está eso escrito en el libro del Justo? El sol se mantuvo inmóvil en medio del cielo y dejó de correr hacia el poniente casi un día entero.
14 There was never a day like that before or since, when Yahweh obeyed the voice of a man -- forYahweh was fighting for Israel.	14 Jamás hubo otro día, ni antes ni después, en que el Señor obedeciera a la voz de un hombre. Realmente, el Señor combatía en favor de Israel.
15 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then went back to the camp at Gilgal.	15 Luego Josué regresó al campamento de Guilgal, acompañado de todo Israel.
16 As regards the five kings, these had fled and hidden in the cave of Makkedah,	16 Aquellos cinco reyes, por su parte, habían logrado escapar, refugiándose en una caverna, cerca de Maquedá.
17 and news of this was brought to Joshua. 'The five kings have been found hiding in the cave atMakkedah.'	17 Cuando se notificó a Josué que habían encontrado a los cinco reyes escondidos en esa caverna,
18 Joshua said, 'Rol great stones over the mouth of the cave and post men there to keep guard.	18 les ordenó: «Hagan rodar unas piedras bien grandes hasta la entrada de la caverna, y dejen allí apostados a unos cuantos hombres para que los vigilen.
19 You yourselves, do not stay there doing nothing; pursue the enemy, cut off their line of retreat and donot let them enter their towns, for Yahweh your God has put them at your mercy.'	19 Pero ustedes no se detengan: persigan a sus enemigos y córtenles la retirada, para impedirles que entren en sus ciudades. Porque el Señor se los ha entregado».
20 When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great defeat on them, to the point ofdestroying them, those who had escaped alive took refuge in their fortresses.	20 Y cuando Josué y los israelitas los derrotaron por completo, hasta aniquilarlos –sólo algunos fugitivos habían escapado de ellos y se habían refugiado en las ciudades fortificadas–
21 The people came back to Joshua's camp at Makkedah; they were all safe and sound, and no onedared to attempt anything against the Israelites.	21 todo el ejército regresó sano y salvo al campamento de Josué, en Maquedá. Nadie había podido causar el menor daño a los israelitas.
22 Joshua then said, 'Clear the mouth of the cave and bring the five kings out to me.'	22 Entonces Josué dijo: «Despejen la abertura de la caverna, hagan salir a esos cinco reyes, y tráiganlos aquí».
23 They did so, and brought the five kings out of the cave to take them to him: the king of Jerusalem, theking of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon.	23 Así lo hicieron: sacaron de la caverna a los cinco reyes –los reyes de Jerusalén, de Hebrón, de Iarmut, de Laquís y de Eglón–
24 When these kings had been brought out, Joshua assembled al the men of Israel and said to thechiefs of the warriors who had fought with him, 'Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings!'They came forward and put their feet on their necks.	24 y una vez que los tuvieron afuera, se los llevaron a Josué. Este convocó a todos los hombres de Israel y dijo a los oficiales que lo habían acompañado: «Acérquense y pongan sus pies sobre la nuca de estos reyes». Ellos se acercaron y les pusieron el pie sobre la nuca.
25 'Be fearless and undaunted,' Joshua went on, 'be strong and stand firm, for this is how Yahweh wildeal with al the enemies you fight.'	25 Luego continuó diciéndoles: «No tengan miedo ni se acobarden; sean fuertes y valientes, porque el Señor hará lo mismo con todos los enemigos, contra los que ustedes tengan que luchar».
26 With this, Joshua struck and killed them and had them hanged on five trees; they hung there tillevening.	26 Después de esto, Josué los mandó matar y los hizo colgar de cinco árboles. Allí quedaron suspendidos hasta la tarde,
27 At the hour of sunset, on Joshua's orders, they were taken down from the trees and thrown into thecave where they had been hiding. Great stones were laid over the mouth of the cave, and these are stil there tothis very day.	27 y a la puesta del sol, Josué mandó que los descolgaran de los árboles. Luego los arrojaron en la cueva donde habían estado escondidos, y a la entrada de la misma pusieron grandes piedras, que todavía están allí.
28 The same day Joshua captured Makkedah, putting it and its king to the sword; he delivered themover to the curse of destruction, with every living creature there, and let no one escape, and he treated the kingof Makkedah as he had treated the king of Jericho.	28 Aquel mismo día, Josué se apoderó de Maquedá y pasó al filo de la espada a la ciudad y a su rey, consagrándolos al exterminio junto con todos los seres vivientes que había en ella. No dejó a nadie con vida, y trató al rey de Maquedá como había tratado al rey de Jericó.
29 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it	29 Luego Josué, con todo Israel pasó de Maquedá a Libná y la atacó.
30 and Yahweh put this, too, and its king at Israel's mercy; and Israel put every living creature there tothe sword, and left none alive, and treated its king like the king of Jericho.	30 El Señor puso a la ciudad y al rey en manos de Israel, que la pasó al fino de la espada con todos los seres vivientes que había en ella. No dejó a nadie con vida, y trató a su rey como había tratado al rey de Jericó.
31 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Libnah to Lachish and besieged it and attacked it.	31 Después Josué, con todo Israel, pasó de Libná a Laquís, la asedió y la atacó.
32 Yahweh put Lachish at Israel's mercy, and Israel took it on the second day and put it and every livingcreature in it to the sword, as they had treated Libnah.	32 El Señor puso también a Laquís en manos de Israel, que la conquistó al segundo día, y la pasó al filo de la espada con todos los seres vivientes que había en ella, exactamente como había hecho con Libná.
33 Horam king of Gezer then marched up to help Lachish, but Joshua beat him and his people until notone was left alive.	33 Mientras tanto, Horam, rey de Guézer, subió en ayuda de Laquís; pero Josué lo derrotó, a él y a su ejército, hasta no dejar ningún sobreviviente.
34 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Lachish to Eglon. They besieged it and attacked it.	34 Luego Josué, con todo Israel, subió de Eglón a Hebrón. La sitiaron, la atacaron,
35 The same day they took it and put it to the sword. That day he delivered over to the curse ofdestruction every living creature there, treating it as he had treated Lachish.	35 y ese mismo día la tomaron y la pasaron al filo de la espada. Aquel día Josué consagró al exterminio a todos los seres vivientes que había en la ciudad, exactamente como había hecho con Laquís.
36 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on up from Eglon to Hebron. They attacked it,	36 Después Josué, con todo Israel, subió de Eglón a Hebrón. La atacaron,
37 took it and put it to the sword, with its king, its dependencies and every living creature in it. As he hadtreated Eglon, so here, he left no one alive. He delivered it over to the curse of destruction, with every livingcreature in it.	37 la tomaron, y pasaron al filo de la espada a la ciudad, a su rey, y a todos los seres vivientes que había en ella. Josué no dejó a nadie con vida, sino que hizo con ella lo mismo que había hecho con Eglón: consagró al exterminio a la ciudad y a todos los seres vivientes que había en ella.
38 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then turned back on Debir and attacked it.	38 Luego Josué, con todo Israel, volvió atrás hasta Debir, la atacó,
39 He took it and its king and al the places belonging to it; they put them to the sword, and every livingcreature there they delivered over to the curse of destruction. He left no one alive. As he had treated Hebron, ashe had treated Libnah and its king, so he treated Debir and its king.	39 y se apoderó de la ciudad, de su rey y de todas sus otras ciudades. Los israelitas los pasaron al filo de la espada, y consagraron al exterminio a todos los seres vivientes que había en la ciudad, sin dejar a nadie con vida. Josué trató a Debir como había tratado a Hebrón y a su rey, y como había tratado a Libná y a su rey.
40 Thus Joshua subjugated the whole country: the highlands, the Negeb, the lowlands and wateredfoothil s, and al their kings. He left not one survivor and put every living thing under the curse of destruction, asYahweh, God of Israel, had commanded.	40 Así Josué conquistó toda la región: la Montaña, con todos sus reyes. No dejó a nadie con vida, sino que consagró al exterminio a todos los seres vivientes, como el Señor, Dios de Israel, le había ordenado.
41 Joshua conquered them from Kadesh-Barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far asGibeon.	41 Josué conquistó desde Cades Barné hasta Gaza, y toda la región de Gosen hasta Gabaón.
42 Al these kings and their territory Joshua captured in a single campaign, because Yahweh, God ofIsrael, fought for Israel.	42 En una sola campaña se apoderó de todos estos reyes y de sus territorios, porque el Señor, el Dios de Israel, combatía a favor de los israelitas.
43 And then Joshua, and al Israel with him, went back to the camp at Gilgal.	43 Finalmente, Josué regresó al campamento de Guilgal, acompañado de todo Israel.
