1 Now, it happened that Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem, learned that Joshua had conquered Ai and putthe town under the curse of destruction, treating Ai and its king as he had already treated Jericho and its king;and also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living with them.	1 Ma avendo inteso Adonisedec re di Gerusalemme, come Giosuè avea presa Hai, e l’avea distrutta (perocché come avea fatto a Gerico, e al suo re, cosi avea fatto ad Hai, e al suo re), e come i Gabaoniti si erano voltati dalla parte d'Israele, e si eran collegati con esso,
2 There was consternation at this, since Gibeon was as important a town as any of the royal townsthemselves (it was larger than Ai), while al its citizens were fighting men.	2 Ebbe gran paura. Imperocché Gabaon era città grande, e una delle città reali, e più grande della città di Hai, e tutti i suoi guerrieri erano di sommo valore.
3 Consequently, Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king ofJarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon,	3 Per la qual cosa Adonisedec re di Gerusalemme mandò gente ad Oham re di Hebron, e a Pharam re di Jerimoth, e anche a Japhia re di Lachis, e a Dabir re di Eglon, che dicesse loro:
4 'Join me up here and help me to conquer Gibeon, since it has made peace with Joshua and theIsraelites.'	4 Venite a me, e conducetemi soccorso, affinchè espugniamo Gabaon: per qual motivo lasceremo ch'ella siasi voltata dalla parte di Giosuè, e de’ figliuoli d’Israele?
5 The five Amorite kings joined forces and went up there, that is, the king of Jerusalem, the king ofHebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon, they and al their armies; laying siege toGibeon, they attacked it.	5 Si adunarono adunque, e si mossero cinque re Amorrhei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Hebron, il re di Jerimoth, il re di Lachis, il re di Eglon coi loro eserciti, e posero il campo intorno a Gabaon, e l’assediarono.
6 The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, 'Do not desert your servants; come uphere quickly to save us and help us, since al the Amorite kings living in the highlands have al ied themselvesagainst us.'	6 Ma gli abitatori dell'assediata città di Gabaon spediron gente a Giosuè, il quale era allora attendato in Galgala, e gli dissero: Non tirarti indietro dal recar aiuto a' tuoi servi: muoviti prestamente, e liberaci col tuo soccorso: perocché si sono collegati contro di noi tutti i re degli Amorrhei che abitan la montagna.
7 Joshua came up from Gilgal, he, al the fighting men and all the bravest of his army.	7 E Giosuè si mosse da Galgala, e con lui tutto l'esercito de' combattenti più valorosi.
8 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of these people; I have put them at your mercy; not one ofthem wil put up any resistance.'	8 E il Signore disse a Giosuè: Non aver paura di coloro: perocché io gli ho dati in tuo potere: nissuno di loro potrà resistere a te.
9 Having marched from Gilgal throughout the night, Joshua caught them unawares.	9 Giosuè adunque avendo camminato tutta la notte venendo da Galgala, improvissamente gli assaltò.
10 Yahweh threw them into disorder at the sight of Israel, defeating them completely at Gibeon;furthermore, he pursued them by way of the Descent of Beth-Horon and harassed them as far as Azekah (andas far as Makkedah).	10 E il Signore li mise in iscompiglio alla vista d'Israele: e diede loro una grande sconfitta a Gabaon, e (Israele) gl'inseguì facendone scempio per la strada che sale a Beth-horon sino ad Azeca, e Maceda.
11 And as they fled from Israel down the Descent of Beth-Horon, Yahweh hurled huge hailstones fromheaven on them all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died under the hailstones than under theswords of the Israelites.	11 E nel sottrarsi colla fuga a' figliuoli d'Israele, essendo quelli nella discesa di Beth-horon, il Signore piovve sopra di loro dal cielo delle grandi pietre fino ad Azeca: e molti più perirono per la grandinata dei sassi, che pe’ colpi delle spade de' figliuoli d'Israele.
12 Joshua then spoke to Yahweh, the day Yahweh delivered the Amorites to the Israelites. In thepresence of Israel, Joshua said: Sun, stand stil over Gibeon, and, moon, you too, over the Vale of Aijalon!	12 Allora si fu che Giosuè parlò al Signore nel giorno, in cui egli abbandonò gli Amorrhei al potere de' figliuoli d'Israele, e disse alla loro presenza: Sole, non ti muovere di sopra Gahaon; Luna, non muoverti di sopra la valle di Ajalon.
13 And the sun stood stil , and the moon halted, until the people had taken vengeance on their enemies.Is this not written in the Book of the Just? The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting foralmost a whole day.	13 E si fermarono il sole e la luna, fintantoché il popolo facesse vendetta de' suoi nemici. Questa cosa non è ella scritta nel libro de’ giusti? Stette adunque fermo il sole nel mezzo del cielo, e non si affrettò a tramontare per lo spazio di un giorno.
14 There was never a day like that before or since, when Yahweh obeyed the voice of a man -- forYahweh was fighting for Israel.	14 Non fu mai nè prima, nè dopo giornata sì lunga, obbedendo il Signore alla voce di un uomo, e pugnando in favor d’Israele.
15 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then went back to the camp at Gilgal.	15 E se ne tornò Giosuè con tutto Israele agli alloggiamenti di Galgala.
16 As regards the five kings, these had fled and hidden in the cave of Makkedah,	16 Or i cinque re eran fuggiti, e si erano nascosti in una caverna della città di Maceda:
17 and news of this was brought to Joshua. 'The five kings have been found hiding in the cave atMakkedah.'	17 E fu recato avviso a Giosuè come erano stati scoperti i cinque re appiattati nella caverna della città di Maceda.
18 Joshua said, 'Rol great stones over the mouth of the cave and post men there to keep guard.	18 Ed egli ordinò, e disse a' compagni: Rotolate delle grandi pietre all'imboccatura della caverna, e mettetevi degli uomini diligenti a guardia di que’ che son dentro.
19 You yourselves, do not stay there doing nothing; pursue the enemy, cut off their line of retreat and donot let them enter their towns, for Yahweh your God has put them at your mercy.'	19 Ma voi non istate oziosi, anzi inseguite il nemico, e uccidete i men lesti alla fuga: e non permettete che si rifuggano nelle loro città forti quelli che Dio ha dato nelle mani vostre.
20 When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great defeat on them, to the point ofdestroying them, those who had escaped alive took refuge in their fortresses.	20 Fu adunque fatto gran macello de' nemici, quasi fino all’ultimo loro esterminio; e quegli, a' quali riuscì di sottrarsi alle mani d'Israele, entrarono nelle città forti.
21 The people came back to Joshua's camp at Makkedah; they were all safe and sound, and no onedared to attempt anything against the Israelites.	21 E tutto l'esercito se ne tornò salvo, e senza perdita di un uomo a trovar Giosuè in Maceda, dove allora era il campo: e non v'ebbe cane che abbaiasse contro i figliuoli d'Israele.
22 Joshua then said, 'Clear the mouth of the cave and bring the five kings out to me.'	22 E Giosuè ordinò, e disse: Aprite l'imboccatura della caverna, e menate fuora dinanzi a me i cinque re che vi sono appiattati.
23 They did so, and brought the five kings out of the cave to take them to him: the king of Jerusalem, theking of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon.	23 E i ministri eseguirono il comando, e trasser fuora dalla caverna, e presentarono a lui i cinque re, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Hebron, il re di Jerimoth, il re di Lachis, il re di Eglon.
24 When these kings had been brought out, Joshua assembled al the men of Israel and said to thechiefs of the warriors who had fought with him, 'Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings!'They came forward and put their feet on their necks.	24 E condotti che furono alla sua presenza, chiamò egli a sè tutti gli uomini d'Israele, e disse a' principi dell'esercito, che eran accanto a lui: Andate, e mettete i piedi sul collo di questi re. E quegli essendo andati, e avendo calpestati co' piedi i colli di que' re soggiogati,
25 'Be fearless and undaunted,' Joshua went on, 'be strong and stand firm, for this is how Yahweh wildeal with al the enemies you fight.'	25 Disse egli loro di nuovo: Non temete, non vi sbigottite, fatevi cuore, siate costanti: perocché così farà il Signore a tutti i nemici vostri, contro dei quali avete a combattere.
26 With this, Joshua struck and killed them and had them hanged on five trees; they hung there tillevening.	26 Indi Giosuè li fece battere, e uccidere, e li fece impiccare a cinque forche, e rimaser appiccati fino alla sera.
27 At the hour of sunset, on Joshua's orders, they were taken down from the trees and thrown into thecave where they had been hiding. Great stones were laid over the mouth of the cave, and these are stil there tothis very day.	27 E sul tramontar del sole ordinò a’ compagni di levarli dai loro patiboli. E levatili, li gettarono nella caverna, in cui erano appiattati, e misero sull’entrata delle grosse pietre, le quali vi son rimase fino al dì d'oggi.
28 The same day Joshua captured Makkedah, putting it and its king to the sword; he delivered themover to the curse of destruction, with every living creature there, and let no one escape, and he treated the kingof Makkedah as he had treated the king of Jericho.	28 Lo stesso giorno prese ancor Giosuè per forza la città di Maceda, e mise a fil di spada il suo re, e tutti gli abitanti di essa: nè vi lasciò nemmen qualche piccolo avanzo. E fece al re di Maceda, come avea fatto al re di Gerico.
29 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it	29 E da Maceda passò con tutto Israele a Lebna, e l'assediò:
30 and Yahweh put this, too, and its king at Israel's mercy; and Israel put every living creature there tothe sword, and left none alive, and treated its king like the king of Jericho.	30 E il Signore la diede insieme col suo re nelle mani d’Israele; e misero a fil di spada quanti si trovarono abitatori nella città: e non vi lasciaron anima viva. E fecero al re di Lebna, come avean fatto al re di Gerico.
31 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Libnah to Lachish and besieged it and attacked it.	31 Da Lebna passò a Lachis con tutto Israele: e circondatala col suo esercito l’assediò.
32 Yahweh put Lachish at Israel's mercy, and Israel took it on the second day and put it and every livingcreature in it to the sword, as they had treated Libnah.	32 E il Signore diede Lachis nelle mani d'Israele, e la prese il secondo giorno, e mise a fil di spada tutta la gente che v'era dentro, come avea fatto a Lebna.
33 Horam king of Gezer then marched up to help Lachish, but Joshua beat him and his people until notone was left alive.	33 In quel tempo si mosse Horam re di Gazer per recare soccorso a Lachis: e Giosuè lo sconfisse con tutta la sua gente fino all'ultimo sterminio.
34 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Lachish to Eglon. They besieged it and attacked it.	34 E passò da Lachis ad Eglon, e vi pose assedio.
35 The same day they took it and put it to the sword. That day he delivered over to the curse ofdestruction every living creature there, treating it as he had treated Lachish.	35 E la espugnò nel medesimo giorno: e mise a fil di spada tutta la gente che vi era dentro, appunto come avea fatto a Lachis.
36 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on up from Eglon to Hebron. They attacked it,	36 Andò parimente con tutto Israele da Eglon a Hebron, e le pose l'assedio:
37 took it and put it to the sword, with its king, its dependencies and every living creature in it. As he hadtreated Eglon, so here, he left no one alive. He delivered it over to the curse of destruction, with every livingcreature in it.	37 E la prese, e mise tutto a fil di spada, ucciso anche il suo re, e così fece a tutte le piccole città di quel paese, e a tutta la gente che vi abitava: non la perdonò a nissuno: come avea fatto ad Eglon, così fece anche ad Hebron, mettendo a fil di spada quanta gente vi ritrovò.
38 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then turned back on Debir and attacked it.	38 Indi tornò verso Dabir,
39 He took it and its king and al the places belonging to it; they put them to the sword, and every livingcreature there they delivered over to the curse of destruction. He left no one alive. As he had treated Hebron, ashe had treated Libnah and its king, so he treated Debir and its king.	39 La prese, e la saccheggiò: e uccise il suo, re, e mise a fil di spada quanta gente si trovò anche per le città circonvicine: non vi lasciò anima viva: come avea fatto ad Hebron, e a Lebna, e a' loro re, così fece a Dabir, e al suo re.
40 Thus Joshua subjugated the whole country: the highlands, the Negeb, the lowlands and wateredfoothil s, and al their kings. He left not one survivor and put every living thing under the curse of destruction, asYahweh, God of Israel, had commanded.	40 Giosuè adunque devastò tutto il paese montuoso, e di mezzodì, e il paese di pianura, e Asedoth co' loro re: non vi lasciò reliquia, ma uccise tutto quello che respirava, come gli aveva ordinato il Signore Dio d'Israele.
41 Joshua conquered them from Kadesh-Barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far asGibeon.	41 Da Cadesbarne sino a Gaza, e tutta la terra di Gosen fino a Gabaon:
42 Al these kings and their territory Joshua captured in a single campaign, because Yahweh, God ofIsrael, fought for Israel.	42 E in una scorsa prese tutti i re, e devastò i loro paesi: perocché il Signore Dio d'Israele combattè per lui.
43 And then Joshua, and al Israel with him, went back to the camp at Gilgal.	43 E se ne tornò con tutto Israele a Galgala, dove era l'accampamento.
