1 Now, it happened that Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem, learned that Joshua had conquered Ai and putthe town under the curse of destruction, treating Ai and its king as he had already treated Jericho and its king;and also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living with them.	1 Adoni-Sédec, roi de Jérusalem, apprit que Josué s’était emparé d’Aï et lui avait jeté l’anathème: il avait traité Aï et son roi comme il avait traité Jéricho et son roi. Il sut aussi que les habitants de Gabaon, qui vivaient au milieu des Israélites, avaient fait la paix avec eux,
2 There was consternation at this, since Gibeon was as important a town as any of the royal townsthemselves (it was larger than Ai), while al its citizens were fighting men.	2 et il eut très peur. Car Gabaon était une grande ville, comme une capitale royale; elle était plus grande qu’Aï et ses hommes étaient tous entraînés.
3 Consequently, Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king ofJarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon,	3 Aussi Adoni-Sédec, roi de Jérusalem, envoya-t-il dire à Hoham roi d’Hébron, à Piréam, roi de Yarmout, à Yafia, roi de Lakish, et à Débir, roi d’Églon:
4 'Join me up here and help me to conquer Gibeon, since it has made peace with Joshua and theIsraelites.'	4 “Montez chez moi et aidez-moi à frapper Gabaon, car elle a fait la paix avec Josué et les Israélites.”
5 The five Amorite kings joined forces and went up there, that is, the king of Jerusalem, the king ofHebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon, they and al their armies; laying siege toGibeon, they attacked it.	5 Les cinq rois des Amorites se réunirent donc et se mirent en campagne avec toute leur armée: le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d’Hébron, le roi de Yarmout, le roi de Lakish, le roi d’Églon. Ils campèrent face à Gabaon pour attaquer la ville.
6 The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, 'Do not desert your servants; come uphere quickly to save us and help us, since al the Amorite kings living in the highlands have al ied themselvesagainst us.'	6 Les gens de Gabaon envoyèrent prévenir Josué au camp de Guilgal: “Ne refuse pas ton secours à tes serviteurs, dépêche-toi de monter vers nous, car tous les rois des Amorites habitant la montagne se sont ligués contre nous. Viens nous délivrer et sauve-nous.”
7 Joshua came up from Gilgal, he, al the fighting men and all the bravest of his army.	7 Josué monta donc de Guilgal, et avec lui tous les hommes de guerre, tous les courageux guerriers.
8 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of these people; I have put them at your mercy; not one ofthem wil put up any resistance.'	8 Yahvé dit à Josué: “Ne crains pas: je les ai livrés entre tes mains, et pas un ne te résistera.”
9 Having marched from Gilgal throughout the night, Joshua caught them unawares.	9 Josué les attaqua par surprise, car il était monté de Guilgal durant la nuit.
10 Yahweh threw them into disorder at the sight of Israel, defeating them completely at Gibeon;furthermore, he pursued them by way of the Descent of Beth-Horon and harassed them as far as Azekah (andas far as Makkedah).	10 Yahvé les mit en déroute devant Israël et leur infligea une grande défaite à Gabaon. Josué les poursuivit sur la route qui monte à Beth-Horon et les frappa jusqu’à Azéka et Makkéda.
11 And as they fled from Israel down the Descent of Beth-Horon, Yahweh hurled huge hailstones fromheaven on them all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died under the hailstones than under theswords of the Israelites.	11 Tandis qu’ils fuyaient devant Israël, Yahvé lança du haut du ciel comme de grosses pierres alors qu’ils atteignaient la descente de Beth-Horon, jusqu’à Azéka. Ils furent frappés à mort. Ceux qui moururent par les pierres de grêle furent plus nombreux que ceux qui tombèrent sous l’épée des Israélites.
12 Joshua then spoke to Yahweh, the day Yahweh delivered the Amorites to the Israelites. In thepresence of Israel, Joshua said: Sun, stand stil over Gibeon, and, moon, you too, over the Vale of Aijalon!	12 En ce jour où Yahvé livra l’Amorite entre les mains des Israélites, Josué se tourna vers Yahvé et s’écria devant tout Israël: “Arrête-toi, soleil, sur Gabaon! Et toi, lune, sur la vallée d’Ayyalon!”
13 And the sun stood stil , and the moon halted, until the people had taken vengeance on their enemies.Is this not written in the Book of the Just? The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting foralmost a whole day.	13 Et le soleil s’arrêta et la lune devint immobile, jusqu’à ce que le peuple se fut vengé de ses ennemis. Cela n’est-il pas écrit dans le Livre du Juste? Le soleil s’arrêta au milieu des cieux et retarda son coucher durant presque un jour entier.
14 There was never a day like that before or since, when Yahweh obeyed the voice of a man -- forYahweh was fighting for Israel.	14 Il n’y a pas eu d’autre jour comme celui-là, ni avant, ni après, où Yahvé ait écouté la voix d’un homme. Yahvé, ce jour-là, combattait pour Israël.
15 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then went back to the camp at Gilgal.	15 Josué et tout Israël retournèrent à leur camp, à Guilgal.
16 As regards the five kings, these had fled and hidden in the cave of Makkedah,	16 Or les cinq rois qui étaient en fuite, s’étaient cachés dans la grotte de Makkéda.
17 and news of this was brought to Joshua. 'The five kings have been found hiding in the cave atMakkedah.'	17 On avertit Josué: “On a retrouvé les cinq rois! Ils sont cachés dans la grotte de Makkéda.”
18 Joshua said, 'Rol great stones over the mouth of the cave and post men there to keep guard.	18 Josué dit: “Roulez de grandes pierres à l’entrée de la grotte et postez à côté d’elle des hommes pour la garder.
19 You yourselves, do not stay there doing nothing; pursue the enemy, cut off their line of retreat and donot let them enter their towns, for Yahweh your God has put them at your mercy.'	19 Mais vous tous, ne vous arrêtez pas, poursuivez vos ennemis, coupez-leur la retraite; empêchez-les de regagner leur ville, car Yahvé votre Dieu les a livrés entre vos mains.”
20 When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great defeat on them, to the point ofdestroying them, those who had escaped alive took refuge in their fortresses.	20 Josué et les Israélites achevèrent de les écraser et de les exterminer; seuls quelques fuyards réussirent à rejoindre les villes fortifiées.
21 The people came back to Joshua's camp at Makkedah; they were all safe and sound, and no onedared to attempt anything against the Israelites.	21 Alors tout le peuple s’en retourna sans risque près de Josué, à Makkéda; plus personne désormais n’osa lever le petit doigt contre les Israélites.
22 Joshua then said, 'Clear the mouth of the cave and bring the five kings out to me.'	22 Josué avait dit: “Ouvrez l’entrée de la grotte et amenez-moi ces cinq rois; faites-les sortir de la grotte.”
23 They did so, and brought the five kings out of the cave to take them to him: the king of Jerusalem, theking of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon.	23 On fit donc sortir de la grotte les cinq rois: le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d’Hébron, le roi de Yarmout, le roi de Lakish et le roi d’Églon.
24 When these kings had been brought out, Joshua assembled al the men of Israel and said to thechiefs of the warriors who had fought with him, 'Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings!'They came forward and put their feet on their necks.	24 Quand on les eut fait sortir, Josué dit aux chefs de guerre qui avaient combattu avec lui: “Approchez et posez vos pieds sur la nuque de ces rois.” Ils s’approchèrent donc et posèrent leurs pieds sur leur nuque.
25 'Be fearless and undaunted,' Joshua went on, 'be strong and stand firm, for this is how Yahweh wildeal with al the enemies you fight.'	25 Josué leur dit alors: “Ne craignez pas et n’ayez pas peur, soyez forts et courageux, car c’est ainsi que Yahvé traitera tous les ennemis contre lesquels vous devrez combattre.”
26 With this, Joshua struck and killed them and had them hanged on five trees; they hung there tillevening.	26 Après cela, Josué les frappa et les fit mourir. On les pendit à cinq arbres et ils y restèrent pendus jusqu’au soir.
27 At the hour of sunset, on Joshua's orders, they were taken down from the trees and thrown into thecave where they had been hiding. Great stones were laid over the mouth of the cave, and these are stil there tothis very day.	27 Au coucher du soleil, Josué donna l’ordre de les descendre des arbres. On les jeta dans la grotte où ils s’étaient cachés et l’on ferma l’entrée de la grotte avec les grandes pierres qui s’y trouvent encore aujourd’hui.
28 The same day Joshua captured Makkedah, putting it and its king to the sword; he delivered themover to the curse of destruction, with every living creature there, and let no one escape, and he treated the kingof Makkedah as he had treated the king of Jericho.	28 Ce même jour, Josué s’empara de Makkéda et passa la ville au fil de l’épée. Il jeta l’anathème sur la ville et tous ses habitants et ne laissa pas un rescapé. Il traita le roi de Makkéda comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.
29 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it	29 Ensuite Josué et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Makkéda à Libna qu’il attaqua.
30 and Yahweh put this, too, and its king at Israel's mercy; and Israel put every living creature there tothe sword, and left none alive, and treated its king like the king of Jericho.	30 Yahvé livra la ville et son roi entre les mains d’Israël. Il la frappa de l’épée ainsi que tous ses habitants, sans laisser échapper personne, et il traita son roi comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.
31 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Libnah to Lachish and besieged it and attacked it.	31 Josué et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Libna à Lakish. Il établit son camp devant la ville et l’attaqua.
32 Yahweh put Lachish at Israel's mercy, and Israel took it on the second day and put it and every livingcreature in it to the sword, as they had treated Libnah.	32 Yahvé livra Lakish entre les mains d’Israël. Il s’en empara le second jour et la frappa de l’épée ainsi que tous ses habitants, comme il l’avait fait pour Libna.
33 Horam king of Gezer then marched up to help Lachish, but Joshua beat him and his people until notone was left alive.	33 Alors Horam, roi de Guézer, partit au secours de Lakish mais Josué battit le roi et son peuple et ne laissa pas un seul survivant.
34 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Lachish to Eglon. They besieged it and attacked it.	34 Josué, à la tête de tout Israël, passa de Lakish à Églon. Ils établirent leur camp devant la ville et l’attaquèrent.
35 The same day they took it and put it to the sword. That day he delivered over to the curse ofdestruction every living creature there, treating it as he had treated Lachish.	35 Ils s’en emparèrent le jour-même et la passèrent au fil de l’épée. Ce jour-là Josué jeta l’anathème sur tous les habitants comme il l’avait fait pour Lakish.
36 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on up from Eglon to Hebron. They attacked it,	36 Josué, à la tête de tout Israël, monta d’Églon vers Hébron et l’attaqua.
37 took it and put it to the sword, with its king, its dependencies and every living creature in it. As he hadtreated Eglon, so here, he left no one alive. He delivered it over to the curse of destruction, with every livingcreature in it.	37 Ils s’en emparèrent; ils frappèrent de l’épée la ville, son roi, toutes les villes qui dépendaient de lui et tous leurs habitants, comme on l’avait fait pour Églon, sans laisser un seul survivant. Josué voua la ville et tous ses habitants à l’anathème.
38 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then turned back on Debir and attacked it.	38 Josué, à la tête de tout Israël, se tourna vers Débir pour l’attaquer.
39 He took it and its king and al the places belonging to it; they put them to the sword, and every livingcreature there they delivered over to the curse of destruction. He left no one alive. As he had treated Hebron, ashe had treated Libnah and its king, so he treated Debir and its king.	39 Il s’empara de la ville, de son roi et de toutes les villes qui dépendaient de lui. Il les frappa de l’épée et jeta l’anathème sur tous les habitants sans laisser un seul survivant. Il traita Débir et son roi comme il avait traité Hébron et comme il avait traité Libna et son roi.
40 Thus Joshua subjugated the whole country: the highlands, the Negeb, the lowlands and wateredfoothil s, and al their kings. He left not one survivor and put every living thing under the curse of destruction, asYahweh, God of Israel, had commanded.	40 Ainsi donc, Josué frappa tout le pays et ses rois: la montagne, le Négueb, les plaines et les coteaux. Il ne laissa pas un seul survivant, car il jetait l’anathème sur tout être vivant comme Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, l’avait ordonné.
41 Joshua conquered them from Kadesh-Barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far asGibeon.	41 Josué les frappa depuis Qadesh-Barné jusqu’à Gaza, et depuis le pays de Gossen jusqu’à Gabaon.
42 Al these kings and their territory Joshua captured in a single campaign, because Yahweh, God ofIsrael, fought for Israel.	42 Josué se rendit maître d’un seul coup de tous ces rois et de leurs territoires, car Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, combattait pour Israël.
43 And then Joshua, and al Israel with him, went back to the camp at Gilgal.	43 Alors Josué et tout Israël avec lui, regagna le camp de Guilgal.
