Joshua 10

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Now, it happened that Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem, learned that Joshua had conquered Ai and putthe town under the curse of destruction, treating Ai and its king as he had already treated Jericho and its king;and also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living with them.	1 - Adonisedec, re di Gerusalemme, avendo udito che Giosuè aveva preso Ai e l'aveva distrutta (poichè come aveva fatto a Gerico e al suo re, così fece ad Ai e al suo re) e che i Gabaoniti eran ricorsi agli Israeliti e avevan stretto alleanza con loro,
2 There was consternation at this, since Gibeon was as important a town as any of the royal townsthemselves (it was larger than Ai), while al its citizens were fighting men.	2 ebbe un grande timore, poichè Gabaon era una grande città, una delle città regie e più grande della città di Ai e tutti i suoi abitanti erano valorosi combattenti.
3 Consequently, Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king ofJarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon,	3 Adonisedec re di Gerusalemme adunque mandò a dire a Oam re di Ebron, a Faran re di Jerimot, a Jafia re di Lachis e a Dabir re di Eglon:
4 'Join me up here and help me to conquer Gibeon, since it has made peace with Joshua and theIsraelites.'	4 «Salite da me e portate soldati per espugnare Gabaon, rea d'esser ricorsa a Giosuè ed ai figli di Israele».
5 The five Amorite kings joined forces and went up there, that is, the king of Jerusalem, the king ofHebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon, they and al their armies; laying siege toGibeon, they attacked it.	5 Radunatisi salirono i cinque re degli Amorrei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Jerimot, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon insieme coi loro eserciti e si attendarono intorno a Gabaon per espugnarla.
6 The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, 'Do not desert your servants; come uphere quickly to save us and help us, since al the Amorite kings living in the highlands have al ied themselvesagainst us.'	6 Ma gli abitanti di Gabaon, la città assediata, mandarono a dire a Giosuè accampato presso Galgala: «Non negare il tuo aiuto ai servi tuoi, affrettati a salire da noi, liberaci, soccorrici, perchè contro di noi son convenuti tutti i re degli Amorrei, che abitano fra le montagne».
7 Joshua came up from Gilgal, he, al the fighting men and all the bravest of his army.	7 Giosuè salì da Galgala con tutto l'esercito dei combattenti, uomini di grande valore.
8 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of these people; I have put them at your mercy; not one ofthem wil put up any resistance.'	8 Disse allora il Signore a Giosuè: «Non aver paura di essi, poichè io te li ho dati nelle mani e nessuno di loro ti potrà resistere».
9 Having marched from Gilgal throughout the night, Joshua caught them unawares.	9 Giosuè salì pertanto in gran fretta da Galgala camminando tutta la notte, piombò loro addosso all'improvviso,
10 Yahweh threw them into disorder at the sight of Israel, defeating them completely at Gibeon;furthermore, he pursued them by way of the Descent of Beth-Horon and harassed them as far as Azekah (andas far as Makkedah).	10 mentre il Signore gettava fra essi lo scompiglio di fronte ad Israele, il quale inflisse loro una grande disfatta in Gabaon e li inseguì per la via dell'ascesa di Betoron e li battè fino ad Azeca e a Maceda.
11 And as they fled from Israel down the Descent of Beth-Horon, Yahweh hurled huge hailstones fromheaven on them all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died under the hailstones than under theswords of the Israelites.	11 Mentre essi fuggivano dai figli d'Israele e si trovavano nella discesa di Betoron, il Signore fece cadere dal cielo su di loro delle grosse pietre fino ad Azeca e ne morirono assai più per la grandine di pietre che non per la spada dei figli d'Israele.
12 Joshua then spoke to Yahweh, the day Yahweh delivered the Amorites to the Israelites. In thepresence of Israel, Joshua said: Sun, stand stil over Gibeon, and, moon, you too, over the Vale of Aijalon!	12 Fu allora, in quel giorno in cui l'Amorreo cadde dinanzi ai figli di Israele, che Giosuè parlò al Signore e al cospetto di tutto il popolo disse: «Sole, non muoverti da Gabaone tu, luna, dalla valle di Aialon.»
13 And the sun stood stil , and the moon halted, until the people had taken vengeance on their enemies.Is this not written in the Book of the Just? The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting foralmost a whole day.	13 Il sole e la luna si fermarono fino a che la nazione non si fu vendicata dei suoi nemici. Questo non è scritto nel Libro dei giusti? Si fermò dunque il sole in mezzo al cielo e non si affrettò a tramontare per lo spazio di un giorno.
14 There was never a day like that before or since, when Yahweh obeyed the voice of a man -- forYahweh was fighting for Israel.	14 E mai, nè prima nè poi, vi fu un giorno così lungo, avendo il Signore obbedito alla voce di un uomo e combattuto per Israele.
15 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then went back to the camp at Gilgal.	15 Giosuè con tutto Israele fece ritorno all'accampamento di Galgala.
16 As regards the five kings, these had fled and hidden in the cave of Makkedah,	16 Ma, essendo fuggiti i cinque re e nascostisi in una spelonca della città di Maceda,
17 and news of this was brought to Joshua. 'The five kings have been found hiding in the cave atMakkedah.'	17 la cosa venne riferita a Giosuè con queste parole: «I cinque re furon trovati nascosti in una spelonca della città di Maceda».
18 Joshua said, 'Rol great stones over the mouth of the cave and post men there to keep guard.	18 Giosuè allora ordinò ai suoi: «Fate rotolare dei grandi massi all'imbocco della spelonca e ponete colà uomini avveduti per custodire i rinchiusi;
19 You yourselves, do not stay there doing nothing; pursue the enemy, cut off their line of retreat and donot let them enter their towns, for Yahweh your God has put them at your mercy.'	19 voi però non fermatevi, ma inseguite i nemici, colpite quelli che nella fuga rimangono indietro e non permettete che abbiano da entrare nelle fortezze delle loro città, mentre il Signore Dio li ha dati in vostra balìa».
20 When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great defeat on them, to the point ofdestroying them, those who had escaped alive took refuge in their fortresses.	20 I nemici vennero completamente disfatti e quasi tutti uccisi, e quelli che eran riusciti a fuggire dinanzi ad Israele si rifugiarono nelle città fortificate.
21 The people came back to Joshua's camp at Makkedah; they were all safe and sound, and no onedared to attempt anything against the Israelites.	21 Allora tutto l'esercito, sano e salvo e al completo, fece ritorno da Giosuè in Maceda, ove questi si era accampato; nè v'era più alcuno che ardisse aprir bocca contro i figli d'Israele.
22 Joshua then said, 'Clear the mouth of the cave and bring the five kings out to me.'	22 Giosuè allora ordinò: «Aprite la bocca della caverna e conducetemi i cinque re, che vi stanno nascosti».
23 They did so, and brought the five kings out of the cave to take them to him: the king of Jerusalem, theking of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon.	23 I comandati fecero quanto loro era stato ordinato, trassero fuori della spelonca i cinque re, quello di Gerusalemme, quello di Ebron, quello di Jerimot, quello di Lachis e quello di Eglon.
24 When these kings had been brought out, Joshua assembled al the men of Israel and said to thechiefs of the warriors who had fought with him, 'Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings!'They came forward and put their feet on their necks.	24 Avutili dinanzi a sè, Giosuè chiamò tutti gli uomini d'Israele e disse ai principi dell'esercito, che eran con lui: «Andate a porre i piedi sul collo di questi re». Allorchè essi furono andati a calcare coi loro piedi il collo dei vinti,
25 'Be fearless and undaunted,' Joshua went on, 'be strong and stand firm, for this is how Yahweh wildeal with al the enemies you fight.'	25 soggiunse Giosuè: «Non abbiate paura nè timore; siate forti e coraggiosi, poichè il Signore farà altrettanto con tutti i nemici vostri contro i quali combattete».
26 With this, Joshua struck and killed them and had them hanged on five trees; they hung there tillevening.	26 Poi Giosuè fece percuotere, uccidere e sospendere i cinque re a cinque alberi, dove rimasero appiccati fino a sera.
27 At the hour of sunset, on Joshua's orders, they were taken down from the trees and thrown into thecave where they had been hiding. Great stones were laid over the mouth of the cave, and these are stil there tothis very day.	27 Al tramonto del sole comandò ai suoi di deporli dai patiboli e gettarli nella spelonca dove eran rimasti nascosti. All'entrata di essa furon poste grosse pietre che rimangono ancora fino al presente.
28 The same day Joshua captured Makkedah, putting it and its king to the sword; he delivered themover to the curse of destruction, with every living creature there, and let no one escape, and he treated the kingof Makkedah as he had treated the king of Jericho.	28 Nello stesso giorno Giosuè prese Maceda e passò a fil di spada il re e gli abitanti di essa, non lasciando alcuno in vita. Fece al re di Maceda come avea fatto al re di Gerico.
29 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it	29 Passò quindi con Israele da Maceda a Lebna e combattè contro di essa.
30 and Yahweh put this, too, and its king at Israel's mercy; and Israel put every living creature there tothe sword, and left none alive, and treated its king like the king of Jericho.	30 Avendola il Signore data nelle mani d'Israele insieme al re, fu passata a fil di spada la città e tutti i suoi abitanti, nè vi rimase alcuno in vita e fecero al re di Lebna, come avevan fatto al re di Gerico.
31 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Libnah to Lachish and besieged it and attacked it.	31 Da Lebna passò a Lachis con tutto Israele e avendola circondata con l'esercito, l'espugnò.
32 Yahweh put Lachish at Israel's mercy, and Israel took it on the second day and put it and every livingcreature in it to the sword, as they had treated Libnah.	32 Il Signore diede in mano ad Israele Lachis, e fu presa al secondo giorno e furon passati a fil di spada tutti gli esseri viventi, che si trovavano in essa, come erasi fatto a Lebna.
33 Horam king of Gezer then marched up to help Lachish, but Joshua beat him and his people until notone was left alive.	33 In quel tempo Oram re di Gazer era salito a Lachis per portare aiuto, ma Giosuè lo sconfisse con tutto il suo popolo fino allo sterminio.
34 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Lachish to Eglon. They besieged it and attacked it.	34 Passò quindi da Lachis in Eglon, che venne assediata
35 The same day they took it and put it to the sword. That day he delivered over to the curse ofdestruction every living creature there, treating it as he had treated Lachish.	35 ed espugnata nello stesso giorno e furon passati a fil di spada tutti gli abitanti che vi si trovavano, come era stato fatto a Lachis.
36 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on up from Eglon to Hebron. They attacked it,	36 Salì pure con tutto Israele da Eglon in Ebron e combattè contro di essa;
37 took it and put it to the sword, with its king, its dependencies and every living creature in it. As he hadtreated Eglon, so here, he left no one alive. He delivered it over to the curse of destruction, with every livingcreature in it.	37 la prese e passò a fil di spada anche il re di essa, insieme a tutti i villaggi di quella regione e quanti vi erano abitanti, non lasciando vivo alcuno. Come aveva fatto con Eglon altrettanto fece ad Ebron, colpendo di spada tutto ciò che trovò in essa.
38 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then turned back on Debir and attacked it.	38 Ritornò quindi a Dabir,
39 He took it and its king and al the places belonging to it; they put them to the sword, and every livingcreature there they delivered over to the curse of destruction. He left no one alive. As he had treated Hebron, ashe had treated Libnah and its king, so he treated Debir and its king.	39 che prese e devastò, passando a fil di spada anche il re di essa e tutto ciò che si trovava in quelle borgate circostanti e non lasciando vivo alcuno. Quanto aveva fatto con Ebron, con Lebna e coi loro re, fece anche a Dabir e al suo re.
40 Thus Joshua subjugated the whole country: the highlands, the Negeb, the lowlands and wateredfoothil s, and al their kings. He left not one survivor and put every living thing under the curse of destruction, asYahweh, God of Israel, had commanded.	40 Giosuè dunque devastò tutto il territorio montuoso, quello posto a mezzogiorno e nella pianura, come pure Asedot coi suoi re, non lasciando anima vivente, ma uccidendo, secondo il comando del Signore, tutto ciò che aveva vita
41 Joshua conquered them from Kadesh-Barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far asGibeon.	41 da Cadesbarne fino a Gaza. Devastò pure tutto il paese di Gosen fino a Gabaon,
42 Al these kings and their territory Joshua captured in a single campaign, because Yahweh, God ofIsrael, fought for Israel.	42 prendendo, uccidendo e devastando in brevissimo tempo tutti quei re e tutte quelle regioni, perchè il Signore Dio d'Israele combatteva per lui.
43 And then Joshua, and al Israel with him, went back to the camp at Gilgal.	43 Poi fece ritorno con tutto Israele all'accampamento di Galgala.
