Joshua 10

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 Now, it happened that Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem, learned that Joshua had conquered Ai and putthe town under the curse of destruction, treating Ai and its king as he had already treated Jericho and its king;and also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living with them.	1 Quae cum audisset Adonise dec rex Ierusalem, quod scili cet cepisset Iosue Hai et subvertisset eam — sicut enim fecerat Iericho et regi eius, sic fecit Hai et regi illius — et quod pacem fecissent Gabaonitae cum Israel et essent in medio eorum,
2 There was consternation at this, since Gibeon was as important a town as any of the royal townsthemselves (it was larger than Ai), while al its citizens were fighting men.	2 timuerunt valde. Urbs enim magna erat Gabaon, sicut una regalium civitatum, et maior oppido Hai, omnesque viri eius bellatores fortissimi.
3 Consequently, Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king ofJarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon,	3 Misit ergo Adonisedec rex Ierusalem ad Oham regem Hebron et ad Pharam regem Ierimoth, ad Iaphia quoque regem Lachis et ad Dabir regem Eglon dicens:
4 'Join me up here and help me to conquer Gibeon, since it has made peace with Joshua and theIsraelites.'	4 “ Ascendite ad me et ferte praesidium, ut expugnemus Gabaon, quia fecit pacem cum Iosue et filiis Israel ”.
5 The five Amorite kings joined forces and went up there, that is, the king of Jerusalem, the king ofHebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon, they and al their armies; laying siege toGibeon, they attacked it.	5 Congregati igitur ascenderunt quinque reges Amorraeorum: rex Ierusalem, rex Hebron, rex Ierimoth, rex Lachis, rex Eglon simul cum exercitibus suis; et castrametati sunt circa Gabaon oppugnantes eam.
6 The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, 'Do not desert your servants; come uphere quickly to save us and help us, since al the Amorite kings living in the highlands have al ied themselvesagainst us.'	6 Habitatores autem Gabaon miserunt ad Iosue, qui tunc morabatur in castris apud Galgalam, et dixerunt ei: “ Ne retrahas manus tuas ab auxilio servorum tuorum! Ascende cito et libera nos ferque praesidium: convenerunt enim adversum nos omnes reges Amorraeorum, qui habitant in montanis ”.
7 Joshua came up from Gilgal, he, al the fighting men and all the bravest of his army.	7 Ascenditque Iosue de Galgalis, et omnis exercitus bellatorum cum eo, viri fortissimi.
8 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of these people; I have put them at your mercy; not one ofthem wil put up any resistance.'	8 Dixitque Dominus ad Iosue: “Ne timeas eos! In manus enim tuas tradidi illos; nullus tibi ex eis resistere poterit ”.
9 Having marched from Gilgal throughout the night, Joshua caught them unawares.	9 Irruit itaque Iosue super eos repente tota ascendens nocte de Galgalis,
10 Yahweh threw them into disorder at the sight of Israel, defeating them completely at Gibeon;furthermore, he pursued them by way of the Descent of Beth-Horon and harassed them as far as Azekah (andas far as Makkedah).	10 et conturbavit eos Dominus a facie Israel; contrivitque plaga magna in Gabaon ac persecutus est per viam ascensus Bethoron et percussit usque Azeca et Maceda.
11 And as they fled from Israel down the Descent of Beth-Horon, Yahweh hurled huge hailstones fromheaven on them all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died under the hailstones than under theswords of the Israelites.	11 Cumque fugerent filios Israel et essent in descensu Bethoron, Dominus misit super eos lapides magnos de caelo usque Azeca, et mortui sunt multo plures lapidibus grandinis, quam quos gladio percusserant filii Israel.
12 Joshua then spoke to Yahweh, the day Yahweh delivered the Amorites to the Israelites. In thepresence of Israel, Joshua said: Sun, stand stil over Gibeon, and, moon, you too, over the Vale of Aijalon!	12 Tunc locutus est Iosue Domino in die, qua tradidit Amorraeum in conspectu filiorum Israel, dixitque coram Israel: “ Sol, in Gabaon ne movearis, et luna, in valle Aialon ”.
13 And the sun stood stil , and the moon halted, until the people had taken vengeance on their enemies.Is this not written in the Book of the Just? The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting foralmost a whole day.	13 Steteruntque sol et luna, donec ulcisceretur se gens de inimicis suis. Nonne scriptum est hoc in libro Iusti? Stetit itaque sol in medio caeli et non festinavit occumbere spatio unius fere diei.
14 There was never a day like that before or since, when Yahweh obeyed the voice of a man -- forYahweh was fighting for Israel.	14 Non fuit antea et postea sicut dies illa, oboediente Domino voci hominis, quia Dominus pugnavit pro Israel.
15 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then went back to the camp at Gilgal.	15 Reversusque est Iosue cum omni Israel in castra Galgalae.
16 As regards the five kings, these had fled and hidden in the cave of Makkedah,	16 Fugerant autem quinque reges et se absconderant in spelunca urbis Maceda.
17 and news of this was brought to Joshua. 'The five kings have been found hiding in the cave atMakkedah.'	17 Nuntiatumque est Iosue quod inventi essent quinque reges latentes in spelunca urbis Maceda.
18 Joshua said, 'Rol great stones over the mouth of the cave and post men there to keep guard.	18 Qui praecepit: “ Volvite saxa ingentia ad os speluncae et ponite viros, qui clausos custodiant.
19 You yourselves, do not stay there doing nothing; pursue the enemy, cut off their line of retreat and donot let them enter their towns, for Yahweh your God has put them at your mercy.'	19 Vos autem nolite stare, sed persequimini hostes et extremos quoque fugientium caedite; ne dimittatis eos urbium suarum intrare praesidia, quia tradidit eos Dominus Deus vester in manus vestras ”.
20 When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great defeat on them, to the point ofdestroying them, those who had escaped alive took refuge in their fortresses.	20 Caesis igitur adversariis plaga maxima usque ad internecionem, ut reliquiae tantum ex eis effugere possent in civitates munitas,
21 The people came back to Joshua's camp at Makkedah; they were all safe and sound, and no onedared to attempt anything against the Israelites.	21 reversus est omnis exercitus ad Iosue in Maceda ad castra, sani et integri; nullusque contra filios Israel mutire ausus est.
22 Joshua then said, 'Clear the mouth of the cave and bring the five kings out to me.'	22 Praecepitque Iosue dicens: “ Aperite os speluncae et producite ad me quinque reges, qui in ea latitant ”.
23 They did so, and brought the five kings out of the cave to take them to him: the king of Jerusalem, theking of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon.	23 Feceruntque sic et eduxerunt ad eum quinque reges de spelunca: regem Ierusalem, regem Hebron, regem Ierimoth, regem Lachis, regem Eglon.
24 When these kings had been brought out, Joshua assembled al the men of Israel and said to thechiefs of the warriors who had fought with him, 'Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings!'They came forward and put their feet on their necks.	24 Cumque educti essent ad eum, vocavit omnes viros Israel et ait ad principes exercitus, qui secum erant: “Accedite et ponite pedes super colla regum istorum”. Qui cum accessissent et subiectorum colla pedibus calcarent,
25 'Be fearless and undaunted,' Joshua went on, 'be strong and stand firm, for this is how Yahweh wildeal with al the enemies you fight.'	25 rursum ait ad eos: “ Nolite timere nec paveatis; confortamini et estote robusti! Sic enim faciet Dominus cunctis hostibus vestris, adversum quos dimicatis ”.
26 With this, Joshua struck and killed them and had them hanged on five trees; they hung there tillevening.	26 Percussitque Iosue et interfecit eos atque suspendit super quinque ligna; fueruntque suspensi usque ad vesperum.
27 At the hour of sunset, on Joshua's orders, they were taken down from the trees and thrown into thecave where they had been hiding. Great stones were laid over the mouth of the cave, and these are stil there tothis very day.	27 Cumque occumberet sol, praecepit Iosue, ut deponerent eos de lignis; et depositos proiecerunt in speluncam, in qua latuerant, et posuerunt super os eius saxa ingentia, quae permanent usque in praesens.
28 The same day Joshua captured Makkedah, putting it and its king to the sword; he delivered themover to the curse of destruction, with every living creature there, and let no one escape, and he treated the kingof Makkedah as he had treated the king of Jericho.	28 Eodem quoque die Macedam cepit Iosue et percussit eam in ore gladii regemque illius interfecit et omnes habitatores eius; non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias fecitque regi Maceda, sicut fecerat regi Iericho.
29 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it	29 Transivit cum omni Israel de Maceda in Lobna et pugnabat contra eam.
30 and Yahweh put this, too, and its king at Israel's mercy; and Israel put every living creature there tothe sword, and left none alive, and treated its king like the king of Jericho.	30 Quam tradidit Dominus cum rege suo in manu Israel, percusseruntque urbem in ore gladii et omnes habitatores eius; non dimiserunt in ea ullas reliquias feceruntque regi Lobna, sicut fecerant regi Iericho.
31 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Libnah to Lachish and besieged it and attacked it.	31 De Lobna transivit Iosue in Lachis cum omni Israel et, exercitu per gyrum disposito, oppugnabat eam.
32 Yahweh put Lachish at Israel's mercy, and Israel took it on the second day and put it and every livingcreature in it to the sword, as they had treated Libnah.	32 Tradiditque Dominus Lachis in manu Israel, qui cepit eam die altero; atque percussit in ore gladii omnemque animam, quae fuerat in ea, sicut fecerat Lobna.
33 Horam king of Gezer then marched up to help Lachish, but Joshua beat him and his people until notone was left alive.	33 Eo tempore ascendit Horam rex Gazer, ut auxiliaretur Lachis; quem percussit Iosue cum omni populo eius usque ad internecionem.
34 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Lachish to Eglon. They besieged it and attacked it.	34 Transivitque de Lachis in Eglon cum omni Israel et circumdedit
35 The same day they took it and put it to the sword. That day he delivered over to the curse ofdestruction every living creature there, treating it as he had treated Lachish.	35 atque expugnavit eam eadem die percussitque in ore gladii omnes animas, quae erant in ea, iuxta omnia, quae fecerat Lachis.
36 Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on up from Eglon to Hebron. They attacked it,	36 Ascendit quoque cum omni Israel de Eglon in Hebron et pugnavit contra eam.
37 took it and put it to the sword, with its king, its dependencies and every living creature in it. As he hadtreated Eglon, so here, he left no one alive. He delivered it over to the curse of destruction, with every livingcreature in it.	37 Cepitque eam et percussit in ore gladii, regem quoque eius et omnia oppida eius universasque animas, quae ibi fuerant commoratae; non reliquit ullas reliquias: sicut fecerat Eglon, sic fecit et Hebron, cuncta, quae in ea repperit, consumens gladio.
38 Joshua, and al Israel with him, then turned back on Debir and attacked it.	38 Inde reversus cum omni Israel in Dabir oppugnavit
39 He took it and its king and al the places belonging to it; they put them to the sword, and every livingcreature there they delivered over to the curse of destruction. He left no one alive. As he had treated Hebron, ashe had treated Libnah and its king, so he treated Debir and its king.	39 et cepit eam; regem quoque eius et omnia oppida eius percussit in ore gladii; non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias: sicut fecerat Hebron et Lobna et regibus earum, sic fecit Dabir et regi illius.
40 Thus Joshua subjugated the whole country: the highlands, the Negeb, the lowlands and wateredfoothil s, and al their kings. He left not one survivor and put every living thing under the curse of destruction, asYahweh, God of Israel, had commanded.	40 Percussit itaque Iosue omnem terram: montanam et Nageb atque Sephelam et declivia cum regibus suis; non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias, sed omne, quod spirare poterat, interfecit, sicut praeceperat Dominus, Deus Israel.
41 Joshua conquered them from Kadesh-Barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far asGibeon.	41 Et percussit eos a Cadesbarne usque Gazam, omnem terram Gosen usque Gabaon,
42 Al these kings and their territory Joshua captured in a single campaign, because Yahweh, God ofIsrael, fought for Israel.	42 universosque reges et regiones eorum uno cepit impetu; Dominus enim, Deus Israel, pugnabat pro Israel.
43 And then Joshua, and al Israel with him, went back to the camp at Gilgal.	43 Reversusque est Iosue cum omni Israel ad locum castrorum in Galgala.
