NEW JERUSALEMLXX
1 It is for us who are strong to bear with the susceptibilities of the weaker ones, and not pleaseourselves.1 Ὀφείλομεν δὲ ἡμεῖς οἱ δυνατοὶ τὰ ἀσθενήματα τῶν ἀδυνάτων βαστάζειν καὶ μὴ ἑαυτοῖς ἀρέσκειν.
2 Each of us must consider his neighbour's good, so that we support one another.2 ἕκαστος ἡμῶν τῷ πλησίον ἀρεσκέτω εἰς τὸ ἀγαθὸν πρὸς οἰκοδομήν·
3 Christ did not indulge his own feelings, either; indeed, as scripture says: The insults of those whoinsult you fal on me.3 καὶ γὰρ ὁ Χριστὸς οὐχ ἑαυτῷ ἤρεσεν, ἀλλὰ καθὼς γέγραπται· οἱ ὀνειδισμοὶ τῶν ὀνειδιζόντων σε ἐπέπεσαν ἐπ’ ἐμέ.
4 And all these things which were written so long ago were written so that we, learning perseveranceand the encouragement which the scriptures give, should have hope.4 ὅσα γὰρ προεγράφη, εἰς τὴν ἡμετέραν διδασκαλίαν ἐγράφη, ἵνα διὰ τῆς ὑπομονῆς καὶ διὰ τῆς παρακλήσεως τῶν γραφῶν τὴν ἐλπίδα ἔχωμεν.
5 Now the God of perseverance and encouragement give you al the same purpose, fol owing theexample of Christ Jesus,5 ὁ δὲ θεὸς τῆς ὑπομονῆς καὶ τῆς παρακλήσεως δῴη ὑμῖν τὸ αὐτὸ φρονεῖν ἐν ἀλλήλοις κατὰ Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν,
6 so that you may together give glory to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ with one heart.6 ἵνα ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἐν ἑνὶ στόματι δοξάζητε τὸν θεὸν καὶ πατέρα τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.
7 Accept one another, then, for the sake of God's glory, as Christ accepted you.7 Διὸ προσλαμβάνεσθε ἀλλήλους, καθὼς καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς προσελάβετο ὑμᾶς εἰς δόξαν τοῦ θεοῦ.
8 I tel you that Christ's work was to serve the circumcised, fulfil ing the truthfulness of God by carryingout the promises made to the fathers,8 λέγω γὰρ Χριστὸν διάκονον γεγενῆσθαι περιτομῆς ὑπὲρ ἀληθείας θεοῦ, εἰς τὸ βεβαιῶσαι τὰς ἐπαγγελίας τῶν πατέρων,
9 and his work was also for the gentiles, so that they should give glory to God for his faithful love; as scripture says: For this I shall praise you among the nations and sing praise to your name.9 τὰ δὲ ἔθνη ὑπὲρ ἐλέους δοξάσαι τὸν θεόν, καθὼς γέγραπται·
διὰ τοῦτο ἐξομολογήσομαί σοι ἐν ἔθνεσιν
καὶ τῷ ὀνόματί σου ψαλῶ.
10 And in another place it says: Nations, rejoice, with his people,10 καὶ πάλιν λέγει·
εὐφράνθητε, ἔθνη, μετὰ τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ.
11 and in another place again: Praise the Lord, all nations, extol him, al peoples.11 καὶ πάλιν·
αἰνεῖτε, πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, τὸν κύριον
καὶ ἐπαινεσάτωσαν αὐτὸν πάντες οἱ λαοί.
12 And in Isaiah, it says: The root of Jesse wil appear, he who rises up to rule the nations, and in himthe nations wil put their hope.12 καὶ πάλιν Ἠσαΐας λέγει·
13 May the God of hope fil you with all joy and peace in your faith, so that in the power of the HolySpirit you may be rich in hope.13 Ὁ δὲ θεὸς τῆς ἐλπίδος πληρώσαι ὑμᾶς πάσης χαρᾶς καὶ εἰρήνης ἐν τῷ πιστεύειν, εἰς τὸ περισσεύειν ὑμᾶς ἐν τῇ ἐλπίδι ἐν δυνάμει πνεύματος ἁγίου.
14 My brothers, I am quite sure that you, in particular, are ful of goodness, ful y instructed and capableof correcting each other.14 Πέπεισμαι δέ, ἀδελφοί μου, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐγὼ περὶ ὑμῶν ὅτι καὶ αὐτοὶ μεστοί ἐστε ἀγαθωσύνης, πεπληρωμένοι πάσης [τῆς] γνώσεως, δυνάμενοι καὶ ἀλλήλους νουθετεῖν.
15 But I have special confidence in writing on some points to you, to refresh your memories, because ofthe grace that was given to me by God.15 τολμηρότερον δὲ ἔγραψα ὑμῖν ἀπὸ μέρους ὡς ἐπαναμιμνῄσκων ὑμᾶς διὰ τὴν χάριν τὴν δοθεῖσάν μοι ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ
16 I was given grace to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the gentiles, dedicated to offer them the gospelof God, so that gentiles might become an acceptable offering, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.16 εἰς τὸ εἶναί με λειτουργὸν Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ εἰς τὰ ἔθνη, ἱερουργοῦντα τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ θεοῦ, ἵνα γένηται ἡ προσφορὰ τῶν ἐθνῶν εὐπρόσδεκτος, ἡγιασμένη ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ.
17 So I can be proud, in Christ Jesus, of what I have done for God.17 ἔχω οὖν [τὴν] καύχησιν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τὰ πρὸς τὸν θεόν·
18 Of course I can dare to speak only of the things which Christ has done through me to win theal egiance of the gentiles, using what I have said and done,18 οὐ γὰρ τολμήσω τι λαλεῖν ὧν οὐ κατειργάσατο Χριστὸς δι’ ἐμοῦ εἰς ὑπακοὴν ἐθνῶν, λόγῳ καὶ ἔργῳ,
19 by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God. In this way, from Jerusalemand all round, even as far as Il yricum, I have ful y carried out the preaching of the gospel of Christ;19 ἐν δυνάμει σημείων καὶ τεράτων, ἐν δυνάμει πνεύματος [θεοῦ]· ὥστε με ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ κύκλῳ μέχρι τοῦ Ἰλλυρικοῦ πεπληρωκέναι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Χριστοῦ,
20 and what is more, it has been my rule to preach the gospel only where the name of Christ has notalready been heard, for I do not build on another's foundations;20 οὕτως δὲ φιλοτιμούμενον εὐαγγελίζεσθαι οὐχ ὅπου ὠνομάσθη Χριστός, ἵνα μὴ ἐπ’ ἀλλότριον θεμέλιον οἰκοδομῶ,
21 in accordance with scripture: Those who have never been told about him wil see him, and thosewho have never heard about him will understand.21 ἀλλὰ καθὼς γέγραπται·
οἷς οὐκ ἀνηγγέλη περὶ αὐτοῦ ὄψονται,
καὶ οἳ οὐκ ἀκηκόασιν συνήσουσιν.
22 That is why I have been so often prevented from coming to see you;22 Διὸ καὶ ἐνεκοπτόμην τὰ πολλὰ τοῦ ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ὑμᾶς·
23 now, however, as there is nothing more to keep me in these parts, I hope, after longing for manyyears past to visit you, to see you when I am on the way to Spain-23 νυνὶ δὲ μηκέτι τόπον ἔχων ἐν τοῖς κλίμασιν τούτοις, ἐπιποθίαν δὲ ἔχων τοῦ ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ πολλῶν ἐτῶν,
24 and after enjoying at least something of your company, to be sent on my way with your support.24 ὡς ἂν πορεύωμαι εἰς τὴν Σπανίαν· ἐλπίζω γὰρ διαπορευόμενος θεάσασθαι ὑμᾶς καὶ ὑφ’ ὑμῶν προπεμφθῆναι ἐκεῖ ἐὰν ὑμῶν πρῶτον ἀπὸ μέρους ἐμπλησθῶ.
25 But now I have undertaken to go to Jerusalem in the service of the holy people of God there,25 Νυνὶ δὲ πορεύομαι εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ διακονῶν τοῖς ἁγίοις.
26 since Macedonia and Achaia have chosen to make a generous contribution to the poor amongGod's holy people at Jerusalem.26 εὐδόκησαν γὰρ Μακεδονία καὶ Ἀχαΐα κοινωνίαν τινὰ ποιήσασθαι εἰς τοὺς πτωχοὺς τῶν ἁγίων τῶν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ.
27 Yes, they chose to; not that they did not owe it to them. For if the gentiles have been given a sharein their spiritual possessions, then in return to give them help with material possessions is repaying a debt tothem.27 εὐδόκησαν γὰρ καὶ ὀφειλέται εἰσὶν αὐτῶν· εἰ γὰρ τοῖς πνευματικοῖς αὐτῶν ἐκοινώνησαν τὰ ἔθνη, ὀφείλουσιν καὶ ἐν τοῖς σαρκικοῖς λειτουργῆσαι αὐτοῖς.
28 So when I have done this, and given this harvest into their possession, I shall visit you on the way toSpain.28 τοῦτο οὖν ἐπιτελέσας καὶ σφραγισάμενος αὐτοῖς τὸν καρπὸν τοῦτον, ἀπελεύσομαι δι’ ὑμῶν εἰς Σπανίαν·
29 I am sure that, when I do come to you, I shal come with the fullest blessing of Christ.29 οἶδα δὲ ὅτι ἐρχόμενος πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐν πληρώματι εὐλογίας Χριστοῦ ἐλεύσομαι.
30 Meanwhile I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, that in yourprayers to God for me you exert yourselves to help me;30 Παρακαλῶ δὲ ὑμᾶς[, ἀδελφοί,] διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ διὰ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ πνεύματος συναγωνίσασθαί μοι ἐν ταῖς προσευχαῖς ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ πρὸς τὸν θεόν,
31 praying that I may escape the unbelievers in Judaea, and that the aid I am carrying to Jerusalem wilbe acceptable to God's holy people.31 ἵνα ῥυσθῶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀπειθούντων ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ καὶ ἡ διακονία μου ἡ εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ εὐπρόσδεκτος τοῖς ἁγίοις γένηται,
32 Then I shal come to you, if God wil s, for a happy time of relaxation in your company.32 ἵνα ἐν χαρᾷ ἐλθὼν πρὸς ὑμᾶς διὰ θελήματος θεοῦ συναναπαύσωμαι ὑμῖν.
33 The God of peace be with you al . Amen.33 Ὁ δὲ θεὸς τῆς εἰρήνης μετὰ πάντων ὑμῶν, ἀμήν.
