From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle,1 Paolo, — servo di Cristo Gesù, chiamato ad essere apostolo, prescelto per l’evangelo di Dio,
set apart for the service of the gospel that God promised long ago through his prophets in the holyscriptures.2 che egli già aveva promesso per mezzo dei suoi profeti nelle sante Scritture,
This is the gospel concerning his Son who, in terms of human nature3 riguardante il Figlio suo, nato dalla stirpe di Davide secondo la carne,
was born a descendant of David and who, in terms of the Spirit and of holiness, was designated Son ofGod in power by resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ, our Lord,4 costituito a partire dalla sua risurrezione dai morti Figlio di Dio nella potenza secondo lo spirito santificante, Gesù Cristo, nostro Signore,
through whom we have received grace and our apostolic mission of winning the obedience of faithamong all the nations for the honour of his name.5 per opera del quale abbiamo ricevuto la grazia dell’apostolato, per predicare, a gloria del suo nome, l’obbedienza alla fede in mezzo a tutti i pagani,
You are among these, and by his cal you belong to Jesus Christ.6 nel cui numero siete anche voi, appartenenti per vocazione a Gesù Cristo, —
To you al , God's beloved in Rome, cal ed to be his holy people. Grace and peace from God our Fatherand the Lord Jesus Christ.7 a tutti quelli che, a Roma, sono prediletti di Dio e santi per vocazione: siano con voi la grazia e la pace che discendono da Dio, Padre nostro, e del Signore Gesù Cristo.
First I give thanks to my God through Jesus Christ for al of you because your faith is talked of al overthe world.8 Rendo grazie, prima di tutto, al mio Dio per mezzo di Gesù Cristo riguardo a tutti voi, perché la vostra fede è celebrata nel mondo intero.
God, whom I serve with my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness that I continuallymention you in my prayers,9 Mi è, in verità, testimone Iddio, a cui presto culto col mio spirito annunziando l'evatigelo del Figlio suo, che faccio memoria di voi senza posa
asking always that by some means I may at long last be enabled to visit you, if it is God's will.10 e domando sempre nelle mie preghiere che mi sia finalmente offerta un’occasione opportuna per venire da voi, se è volere di Dio.
For I am longing to see you so that I can convey to you some spiritual gift that will be a lastingstrength,11 Bramo infatti vedervi per farvi partecipi di qualche dono spirituale che vi corrobori
or rather that we may be strengthened together through our mutual faith, yours and mine.12 o meglio, affinché, stando tra voi, possiamo gustare insieme il conforto di avere, voi e io, la medesima fede.
I want you to be quite certain too, brothers, that I have often planned to visit you -- though up to thepresent I have always been prevented -- in the hope that I might work as fruitfully among you as I have amongthe gentiles elsewhere.13 Non voglio che vi sia ignoto, o fratelli, che più volte mi proposi di venire da voi, ma finora ne fui impedito. Vorrei raccogliere qualche frutto anche tra voi, come fra gli altri pagani.
I have an obligation to Greeks as wel as barbarians, to the educated as wel as the ignorant,14 Ai Greci e ai barbari, ai colti e agli ignoranti io son debitore;
and hence the eagerness on my part to preach the gospel to you in Rome too.15 di conseguenza, per quanto sta in me, io ho il desiderio di annunziare l’evangelo anche a voi che siete a Roma.
For I see no reason to be ashamed of the gospel; it is God's power for the salvation of everyone whohas faith -- Jews first, but Greeks as well-16 Certo, io non mi vergogno dell’evangelo, che esso è potenza divina per la salvezza di quanti sono credenti: prima i Giudei e poi i Greci.
for in it is revealed the saving justice of God: a justice based on faith and addressed to faith. As itsays in scripture: Anyone who is upright through faith will live.17 Infatti la giustizia di Dio si rivela in esso dalla fede alla fede, come sta scritto: Il giusto vivrà della fede.
The retribution of God from heaven is being revealed against the ungodliness and injustice of humanbeings who in their injustice hold back the truth.18 Ecco infatti che l’ira di Dio si manifesta dal cielo contro ogni genere d’empietà e d’ingiustizia degli uomini che tengono la verità prigioniera dell’iniquità;
For what can be known about God is perfectly plain to them, since God has made it plain to them:19 perché ciò che di Dio si può conoscere è palese in essi, avendoglielo Iddio stesso manifestato.
ever since the creation of the world, the invisible existence of God and his everlasting power havebeen clearly seen by the mind's understanding of created things. And so these people have no excuse:20 Sì, gli attributi invisibili di lui, l'eterna sua potenza e la sua divinità, fin dalla creazione del mondo si possono intuire, con l’applicazione della mente, attraverso le sue opere. Costoro sono dunque senza scusa,
they knew God and yet they did not honour him as God or give thanks to him, but their argumentsbecame futile and their uncomprehending minds were darkened.21 perché, pur avendo conosciuto Iddio, né gli diedero gloria, come a Dio, né gli resero grazie, ma vaneggiarono nei loro ragionamenti e il loro cuore insensato s’offuscò.
While they claimed to be wise, in fact they were growing so stupid22 Essi, che pretendevano d'essere sapienti, diventarono stolti
that they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for an imitation, for the image of a mortal humanbeing, or of birds, or animals, or crawling things.23 e sostituirono la gloria del Dio immortale con immagini di uomini mortali, di uccelli, di quadrupedi e di rettili, Per questo Iddio li diede, secondo le
That is why God abandoned them in their inmost cravings to filthy practices of dishonouring their ownbodies-24 Per questo Iddio li diede, secondo le voglie dei loro cuori, in balìa dell’impurità, così che giunsero al più profondo avvilimento dei loro corpi;
because they exchanged God's truth for a lie and have worshipped and served the creature insteadof the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.25 proprio essi, che avevano permutato il vero Dio con la menzogna, reso culto ed adorazione alla creatura in cambio del creatore — che sia benedetto per sempre. Amen!
That is why God abandoned them to degrading passions:26 Per questo Iddio li diede in balìa di passioni vergognose. Infatti, le donne loro tramutarono i rapporti conformi a natura con rapporti contro natura;
why their women have exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural practices; and the men, in asimilar fashion, too, giving up normal relations with women, are consumed with passion for each other, mendoing shameful things with men and receiving in themselves due reward for their perversion.27 del pari anche gli uomini abbandonarono i rapporti naturali con la donna e si accesero di brame gli uni verso gli altri, facendo, maschi con maschi, cose infami e ricevendo in loro stessi la giusta paga dovuta alla loro aberrazione.
In other words, since they would not consent to acknowledge God, God abandoned them to theirunacceptable thoughts and indecent behaviour.28 Disdegnarono di conservare la vera conoscenza di Dio; Iddio li diede allora in balìa della loro mentalità pervertita ed essi compirono cose indegne.
And so now they are steeped in al sorts of injustice, rottenness, greed and malice; full of envy,murder, wrangling, treachery and spite,29 Sono riboccanti di ogni sorta di ingiustizia, malvagità, avidità, malizia. Son pieni di invidia, omicidi, discordie, inganni, malignità. Son diffamatori,
libel ers, slanderers, enemies of God, rude, arrogant and boastful, enterprising in evil, rebellious toparents,30 maldicenti, odiosi a Dio, insolenti, superbi, arroganti, escogitatori di mali, ribelli ai genitori,
without brains, honour, love or pity.31 privi di senno, perfidi, senza cuore, senza compassione.
They are well aware of God's ordinance: that those who behave like this deserve to die -- yet they notonly do it, but even applaud others who do the same.32 Pur conoscendo il decreto di Dio, che vuole che gli autori di azioni siffatte sian degni di morte, essi non solo le compiono ma approvano altresì coloro che le commettono.
