1 It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.	1 Or avvenne che mentre Apollo era a Corinto, Paolo, attraversate le provincie superiori, giunse ad Efeso e vi trovò alcuni discepoli,
2 When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'	2 e disse loro: Avete voi ricevuto lo Spirito Santo dopo che avete creduto? Ma quelli risposero: Non abbiamo nemmeno sentito dire che ci sia lo Spirito Santo.
3 He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'	3 Ed egli a loro: Con qual battesimo adunque siete stati battezzati? E quelli dissero: Col battesimo di Giovanni.
4 Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'	4 E allora Paolo: Giovanni battezzò il popolo col battesimo di penitenza, dicendo che credessero in quello che doveva venire dopo di lui, cioè Gesù.
5 When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,	5 Udite tali cose, furono battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesù.
6 and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.	6 E, avendo Paolo imposto loro le mani, sopra di essi venne lo Spirito Santo, e parlavano le lingue, e profetavano.
7 There were about twelve of these men in al .	7 Questi eran circa dodici uomini fra tutti,
8 He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,	8 ed entrato nella sinagoga, parlava liberamente, disputando per tre mesi e rendendo ragione delle cose del regno di Dio.
9 till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.	9 Ma siccome alcuni s'intestavano, non credevano e diffamavano la via del Signore dinanzi al popolo, ritirandosi da loro segregò i discepoli, e disputava ogni giorno nella scuola di un certo Tiranno.
10 This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.	10 E ciò per due anni, in modo che tutti quelli che abitavano l'Asia, e Giudei e Gentili, udirono la parola del Signore.
11 So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands	11 E Dio faceva prodigi non ordinari per mano di Paolo:
12 that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.	12 tanto che si portavano ai malati i fazzoletti ed i grembiuli che erano stati sul corpo di lui, e da essi partivano le malattie ed uscivano gli spiriti maligni.
13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'	13 Tentarono allora alcuni esorcisti Giudei, e girovaghi, di invocare il nome del Signore Gesù sopra coloro, che avevano degli spiriti cattivi, dicendo: Vi scongiuro pel nome di quel Gesù predicato da Paolo.
14 Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.	14 Quelli che facevan questo eran sette figli di Sceva, giudeo principe dei sacerdoti.
15 The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'	15 Ma lo spirito maligno, rispondendo, disse loro: Conosco Gesù e so chi è Paolo; ma voi chi siete?
16 and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another,and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.	16 E l'uomo in cui era lo spirito maligno, saltato loro addosso e sopraffattine due, li malmenò talmente che fuggirono da quella casa ignudi e feriti.
17 Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.	17 E la cosa fu risaputa da tutti i Giudei e i Gentili d'Efeso, e tutti furono presi da timore, ed il nome del Signore Gesù era glorificato.
18 Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s	18 E molti di quelli che avevan creduto venivano a confessare e manifestare le opere loro.
19 and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.	19 E parecchi di quelli che erano andati dietro ad arti vane portarono i loro libri e li bruciarono in presenza di tutti, e calcolatone il prezzo si trovò che ascendeva a cinquantamila pezzi d'argento.
20 In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.	20 Così, cresceva potentemente e s'invigoriva la parola di Dio.
21 When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'	21 Terminate queste cose, Paolo si prefisse nello spirito di andare attraverso la Macedonia e l'Acaia a Gerusalemme, dicendo: Dopo che sarò stato là bisogna che io vada anche a Roma.
22 So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.	22 E, mandati nella Macedonia due di quelli che l'assistevano, Timoteo ed Erasto, egli rimase per un po' di tempo nell'Asia.
23 It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.	23 Allora, nacque non piccolo tumulto a causa della via del Signore.
24 A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,	24 Perchè un certo orefice, di nome Demetrio, che faceva in argento dei tempietti di Diana, e procacciava non poco guadagno agli artigiani,
25 cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.	25 convocati questi e quanti lavoravano in simili cose, disse: Amici, sapete bene che la nostra ricchezza dipende tutta da questa industria;
26 Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.	26 or vedete e sentite che non solo in Efeso, ma in quasi tutta l'Asia, questo Paolo ha pervertito gran folla, affermando che quelli che si fan colle mani non sono dèi.
27 This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'	27 E c'è pericolo che non solo la nostra industria cada in discredito, ma anche il tempio di Diana, la gran dèa, sarà contato per niente e sarà abbattuta la maestà di colei che è venerata in tutta l'Asia, anzi in tutto il mondo.
28 This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'	28 Udito questo, essi, trasportati dallo sdegno, si misero a gridare: Grande è la Diana degli Efesini.
29 The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre,dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.	29 E la città si riempì di confusione, e si precipitarono tutti verso il teatro, trascinando Gaio e Aristarco, Macedoni, compagni di Paolo.
30 Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;	30 E volendo Paolo presentarsi al popolo, i discepoli non lo permisero.
31 in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.	31 Perfino alcuni degli Asiarchi suoi amici, mandarono a pregarlo che non andasse al teatro.
32 By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.	32 Intanto gridavano chi una cosa e chi un'altra. L'assemblea era in confusione ed i più non sapevano perchè si fossero adunati.
33 Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.	33 Trassero poi di tra la folla Alessandro che i Giudei spingevano avanti. E Alessandro, fatto cenno colla mano che tacessero, voleva dire la sua ragione al popolo.
34 As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.	34 Ma, appena lo ebbero conosciuto come giudeo, eruppe da tutti una sola voce, e per quasi due ore gridarono: Grande è la Diana degli Efesini.
35 When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?	35 Avendo poi il segretario calmata la folla, disse: Efesini, chi è mai che non sappia come la città di Efeso è adoratrice della gran Diana, prole di Giove?
36 Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.	36 Non potendo questo esser negato, voi dovete quietarvi, senza far nulla d'avventato.
37 These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.	37 Voi infatti avete menati questi uomini, nè sacrileghi, nè bestemmiatori della nostra dèa.
38 If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.	38 Or se Demetrio e gli artigiani che sono con lui hanno qualche cosa contro qualcuno, ci sono i tribunali ed i proconsoli; si citino davanti a loro.
39 And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.	39 Se poi chiedete qualche altra cosa, potrà decidersi in una legittima adunanza.
40 We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.	40 Ma a causa dei fatti d'oggi, noi corriamo pericolo d'essere accusati di sedizione, non essendoci alcun motivo per cui possiamo render ragione di questo concorso. E detto questo, sciolse l'adunanza.
