NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.	1 Mientras Apolo permanecía en Corinto, Pablo atravesando la región interior, llegó a Efeso. Allí encontró a algunos discípulos
2 When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'	2 y les preguntó: «Cuando ustedes abrazaron la fe, ¿recibieron el Espíritu Santo?». Ellos le dijeron: «Ni siquiera hemos oído decir que hay un Espíritu Santo».
3 He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'	3 «Entonces, ¿qué bautismo recibieron?», les preguntó Pablo. «El de Juan», respondieron.
4 Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'	4 Pablo les dijo: «Juan bautizaba con el bautismo de penitencia, diciendo al pueblo que creyera en el que vendría después de él, es decir, en Jesús».
5 When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,	5 Al oír estas palabras, ellos se hicieron bautizar en el nombre del Señor Jesús.
6 and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.	6 Pablo les impuso las manos, y descendió sobre ellos el Espíritu Santo. Entonces comenzaron a hablar en distintas lenguas y a profetizar.
7 There were about twelve of these men in al .	7 Eran en total unos doce hombres.
8 He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,	8 Pablo fue luego a la sinagoga y durante tres meses predicó abiertamente, hablando sobre el Reino de Dios y tratando de persuadir a los oyentes.
9 till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.	9 Pero como algunos se obstinaban y se negaban a creer, denigrando el Camino del Señor delante de la asamblea, Pablo rompió con ellos. Luego tomó aparte a sus discípulos y dialogaba diariamente en la escuela de Tirano.
10 This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.	10 Así lo hizo durante dos años, de modo que todos los habitantes de la provincia de Asia, judíos y paganos, tuvieron ocasión de escuchar la Palabra del Señor.
11 So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands	11 Por intermedio de Pablo, Dios realizaba milagros poco comunes,
12 that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.	12 hasta tal punto que el aplicarse sobre los enfermos pañuelos o lienzos que habían tocado el cuerpo de Pablo, aquellos se curaban y quedaban libres de los malos espíritus.
13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'	13 Algunos exorcistas ambulantes judíos, hicieron la prueba de pronunciar el nombre del Señor Jesús sobre los poseídos por los malos espíritus, diciendo: «Yo los conjuro por ese Jesús que anuncia Pablo».
14 Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.	14 Un cierto Sevas, Sumo Sacerdote judío, tenía siete hijos que practicaban estos exorcismos.
15 The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'	15 El espíritu malo les respondió: «Yo conozco a Jesús y sé quién es Pablo, pero ustedes, ¿quiénes son?».
16 and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another,and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.	16 Y el hombre poseído por el espíritu malo, abalanzándose sobre los exorcistas, los dominó a todos y los maltrató de tal manera que debieron escaparse de esa casa desnudos y cubiertos de heridas.
17 Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.	17 Todos los habitantes de Efeso, tanto judíos como paganos, se enteraron de este hecho y, llenos de temor, glorificaban el nombre del Señor Jesús.
18 Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s	18 Muchos de los que habían abrazado la fe vinieron a confesar abiertamente sus prácticas,
19 and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.	19 y un buen número de los que se habían dedicado a la magia traían sus libros y los quemaban delante de todos. Se estimó que el valor de estos libros alcanzaba a unas cincuenta mil monedas de plata.
20 In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.	20 Así, por el poder del Señor, la Palabra se difundía y se afianzaba.
21 When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'	21 Después de esto, Pablo se propuso ir a Jerusalén pasando por Macedonia y Acaya. «Primero iré allí, decía, y luego tendré que ir también a Roma».
22 So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.	22 Envió a Macedonia a dos de sus colaboradores, Timoteo y Erasto, y él permaneció en Asia un tiempo más.
23 It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.	23 Fue entonces, cuando se produjeron graves desórdenes a causa del Camino del Señor.
24 A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,	24 Un orfebre llamado Demetrio fabricaba reproducciones en plata del templo de Diana, proporcionando así abundante trabajo a los artesanos.
25 cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.	25 Demetrio los reunió, junto con los que habían trabajos similares, y les dijo: «Ustedes saben perfectamente que nuestro bienestar depende de esta industria.
26 Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.	26 Pero ahora ustedes mismos ven y oyen que no solamente en Efeso, sino también en casi toda la provincia de Asia, ese Pablo ha conquistado y seducido a mucha gente, pretendiendo que los dioses fabricados por mano de hombre no son dioses.
27 This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'	27 De esa manera, no solamente nuestra profesión está amenazada de caer en el descrédito, sino que el templo mismo de la gran diosa Diana corre el riesgo de ser tenido por nada, y aquella a quien adoran toda el Asia y el mundo entero, terminará por quedar despojada de su prestigio.».
28 This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'	28 Al oír estas palabras, la multitud se enfureció y comenzó a gritar: «¡Viva la gran Diana de los efesios!»,
29 The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre,dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.	29 y se produjo un gran desorden en la ciudad. Todos irrumpieron en el teatro, arrastrando a los macedonios Gayo y Aristarco, compañeros de viaje de Pablo.
30 Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;	30 Pablo quería presentarse delante de la asamblea, pero sus discípulos se lo impidieron.
31 in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.	31 Hasta algunos magistrados de la ciudad, que eran amigos suyos, le rogaron que no se expusiera yendo al teatro.
32 By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.	32 Todo el mundo gritaba al mismo tiempo, ya que la confusión reinaba en la concurrencia, y la mayor parte ni siquiera sabía por qué se había reunido.
33 Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.	33 Entonces hicieron salir de entre la multitud a Alejandro, a quien los judíos empujaban hacia adelante. Este, pidiendo silencio con la mano, quería dar una explicación a la asamblea.
34 As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.	34 Pero en cuanto advirtieron que era un judío, todos se pusieron a gritar unánimemente durante dos horas: «¡Viva la gran Diana de los efesios!».
35 When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?	35 Por fin, el secretario de la ciudad consiguió calmar a la multitud, diciendo: «Efesios, ¿qué hombre de este mundo ignora que la ciudad de Efeso es la guardiana del templo de la gran diosa Diana y de su estatua venida del cielo?
36 Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.	36 Siendo esta una verdad innegable, deben quedarse tranquilos y no actuar apresuradamente.
37 These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.	37 Esos hombres que ustedes trajeron, no han cometido ningún sacrilegio ni han dicho ninguna blasfemia contra nuestra diosa.
38 If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.	38 Y si Demetrio y sus artesanos tienen una queja contra alguien, para eso están los tribunales y los procónsules ante quienes se pueden presentar las acusaciones.
39 And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.	39 Si ustedes tienen que debatir algún otro asunto, se decidirá en la asamblea legal.
40 We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.	40 Porque corremos el riesgo de ser acusados de sediciosos, a causa de lo que acaba de suceder, ya que no tenemos ningún motivo para justificar este tumulto». Y con estas palabras, disolvió la asamblea.
