1 It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.	1 Dans le temps qu’Apollos était à Corinthe, Paul voyageait à Éphèse, passant par la montagne, et il y trouvait quelques disciples.
2 When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'	2 Il leur demande: "Avez-vous reçu l’Esprit Saint quand vous avez cru?” Ils répondent: "Nous n’avons même pas entendu dire qu’on reçoive l’Esprit Saint.”
3 He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'	3 Paul leur dit: "Quel baptême avez-vous reçu?” Ils répondent: "Le baptême de Jean.”
4 Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'	4 Alors Paul explique: "Lorsque Jean baptisait en vue d’un changement de vie, il disait au peuple de croire en celui qui viendrait après lui, et c’est Jésus.”
5 When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,	5 En entendant cela, ils se font baptiser au nom du Seigneur Jésus.
6 and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.	6 Paul alors leur impose les mains et l’Esprit Saint vient sur eux: ils commencent à parler en langues et à prophétiser.
7 There were about twelve of these men in al .	7 Les hommes dont il s’agit étaient une douzaine en tout.
8 He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,	8 Paul était allé à la synagogue et durant trois mois il leur parla du royaume de Dieu avec conviction, essayant de les persuader.
9 till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.	9 Quand il vit qu’un certain nombre se durcissaient et refusaient de croire, allant jusqu’à calomnier le Chemin devant tous les autres, il se sépara d’eux. Il prenait à part ses disciples et discutait avec eux tous les jours dans la salle d’un certain Tyrannos, de onze heures à quatre heures.
10 This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.	10 Deux années s’écoulèrent ainsi, de sorte que tous les habitants de la province d’Asie, Grecs ou Juifs, entendirent parler du message du Seigneur.
11 So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands	11 Dieu opérait des miracles peu ordinaires par les mains de Paul.
12 that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.	12 C’était à tel point qu’on allait poser sur des malades les linges et les bandes qu’il avait en sous-vêtements, et ils étaient soulagés de leurs maux. De la même façon les esprits mauvais sortaient.
13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'	13 Il y eut des Juifs, des exorcistes ambulants, qui firent l’essai d’invoquer le Nom du Seigneur Jésus sur ceux qui étaient au pouvoir d’esprits mauvais. Ils disaient: "Je te l’ordonne au nom de ce Jésus que Paul prêche”.
14 Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.	14 Parmi eux se trouvaient les fils d’un prêtre juif nommé Escéva. Mais un jour qu’ils se risquèrent à le faire là où ils étaient entrés,
15 The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'	15 l’esprit mauvais leur répondit: "Je connais Jésus et je sais qui est Paul, mais vous, qui êtes-vous?”
16 and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another,and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.	16 L’homme qui avait cet esprit mauvais se jeta sur eux, les maîtrisa tous les deux et les brutalisa de telle manière qu’ils s’enfuirent nus et blessés.
17 Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.	17 La nouvelle fut connue de tous les habitants d’Éphèse, Juifs ou Grecs; tous en furent fortement impressionnés et le Nom du Seigneur Jésus y gagna en prestige.
18 Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s	18 Beaucoup de ceux qui avaient cru venaient confesser et dire en public ce qu’ils avaient fait.
19 and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.	19 Un certain nombre de ceux qui avaient pratiqué la magie apportèrent leurs livres et les brûlèrent devant tout le monde. On en fit l’estimation: cela représentait 50 000 pièces d’argent.
20 In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.	20 C’est dire que la parole du Seigneur manifestait sa puissance, elle se répandait et se fortifiait.
21 When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'	21 Tout cela avait déjà eu lieu lorsque Paul prit sa décision dans l’Esprit Saint: il irait à Jérusalem en retraversant la Macédoine et l’Achaïe. Il ajoutait: "Après être passé là-bas, il faudra que j’aille également voir Rome.”
22 So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.	22 Paul fit partir pour la Macédoine deux de ses assistants, Timothée et Éraste, et il resta encore quelque temps en Asie.
23 It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.	23 C’est alors que se produisit une véritable émeute à cause du Chemin.
24 A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,	24 Un orfèvre du nom de Démétrios faisait en argent des petits temples d’Artémis et procurait aux artisans de bons revenus.
25 cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.	25 Il les réunit, ainsi que d’autres qui faisaient le même genre de travail, et il leur dit: "Camarades, vous savez que c’est ce travail qui nous rapporte le plus,
26 Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.	26 mais vous voyez et vous apprenez que ce Paul a retourné les convictions de beaucoup de gens, non seulement à Éphèse, mais dans presque toute la province d’Asie. À l’entendre, les dieux ne peuvent pas sortir des mains humaines.
27 This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'	27 Ce ne sont pas seulement nos intérêts qui vont en souffrir, c’est aussi le temple de la grande déesse Artémis qui va y perdre son crédit; finalement, celle que vénère toute l’Asie, et je dirais: la terre entière, va être dépouillée de son prestige.”
28 This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'	28 Ce discours les rendit agressifs. Ils se mirent à crier: "Vive l’Artémis des Éphésiens!”
29 The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre,dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.	29 et ce fut une confusion totale dans la ville. Ils se précipitèrent tous vers le théâtre, entraînant avec eux Gaïus et Aristarque, deux Macédoniens qui voyageaient avec Paul.
30 Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;	30 Paul voulait affronter l’assemblée du peuple, mais les disciples ne le laissèrent pas y aller.
31 in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.	31 Quelques notables de la province d’Asie qui étaient ses amis lui firent passer l’avis de ne pas se risquer au théâtre.
32 By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.	32 D’ailleurs on ne savait plus ce que criaient les uns ou les autres, l’assemblée n’était qu’un désordre et la plupart ne savaient même pas pourquoi ils étaient là.
33 Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.	33 À ce moment on fit sortir de la foule un certain Alexandre que les Juifs poussaient vers la tribune. Il voulait les mettre hors de cause devant la multitude et il fit signe de la main;
34 As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.	34 mais quand on sut qu’il était juif, ce ne fut qu’une clameur dans toute l’assemblée. Et ils restèrent à crier durant près de deux heures: "Grande est l’Artémis des Éphésiens!”
35 When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?	35 Le secrétaire de la ville parvint à calmer la foule. Il leur dit: "Éphésiens, y a-t-il une seule personne pour ignorer que la ville d’Éphèse garde le temple de la grande Artémis et sa statue tombée du ciel?
36 Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.	36 Personne ne peut dire le contraire. Il vous faut donc retrouver votre calme et ne rien faire par emportement.
37 These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.	37 Vous amenez là des hommes qui n’ont pas profané le temple ni insulté notre déesse.
38 If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.	38 Si Démétrios et ses artisans ont à se plaindre de quelqu’un, qu’ils le traduisent en justice: il y a des audiences et des magistrats.
39 And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.	39 Et si le problème va plus loin, on devra le résoudre dans l’assemblée régulière.
40 We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.	40 Vous rendez-vous compte qu’on pourrait nous accuser de sédition pour l’affaire d’aujourd’hui? Nous n’aurions aucun argument à présenter pour justifier ce désordre.” Ceci dit, il renvoya l’assemblée.
