1 It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.	1 Or egli avvenne, che mentre Apollo era in Corinto, Paolo, scorse le provincie superiori, giunse ad Efeso, e vi trovò alcuni discepoli:
2 When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'	2 E disse loro: Avete voi ricevuto lo Spirito santo dopo, che avete creduto? Ma quelli gli dissero: Non abbiamo nemmeno sentito a dire, se siavi lo Spirito santo.
3 He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'	3 Ed egli gli disse: in (nome di) chi adunque siete stati battezzati? E quelli dissero: Col battesimo di Giovanni.
4 Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'	4 Ma disse Paolo: Giovanni battezzò con battesimo di penitenza il popolo dicendo, che credessero in quello, il quale dovea venir dopo di lui, cioè in Gesù.
5 When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,	5 Udite tali cose furono battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesù.
6 and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.	6 E avendo Paolo imposte loro le mani, venne sopra di essi lo Spirito santo, e parlavan le lingue, e profetavano.
7 There were about twelve of these men in al .	7 Questi erano in tutto circa dodici uomini.
8 He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,	8 Ed entrato nella Sinagoga parlava liberamente, disputando per tre mesi, e rendendo ragione delle cose del regno di Dio.
9 till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.	9 Ma indurandosi alcuni, e non credendo, e dicendo male della via del Signore dinanzi alla moltitudine, ritiratosi da coloro, segregò i discepoli, e disputava ogni di nella scuola di un certo Tiranno.
10 This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.	10 E ciò fu per due anni, talmente che tutti quelli, che abitavan nell'Asia, udirono la parola del Signore e Giudei, e Greci.
11 So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands	11 E miracoli non ordinari faceva Dio per mano di Paolo:
12 that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.	12 Di modo che persino portavansi ai malati i fazzoletti, e le fasce state sul corpo di lui, e partivansi da essi le malattie, e gli spiriti cattivi ne uscivano.
13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'	13 E si provarono anche alcuni di que', che andavano attorno esorcisti Giudei, ad invocare il nome del Signore Gesù sopra coloro, che avevano degli spiriti cattivi, dicendo: Vi scongiuro per quel Gesù predicato da Paolo.
14 Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.	14 Que', che facevan questo, erano sette figli di Sceva Giudeo principe de' sacerdoti.
15 The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'	15 Ma il malo spirito rispose, e disse loro: Conosco Gesù, e so chi è Paolo: ma voi chi siete?
16 and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another,and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.	16 E saltato loro adosso quell'uomo, in cui era lo spirito pessimo, e potendone più di loro due, gli strapazzò in guisa, che ignudi, e feriti si partirono da quella casa.
17 Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.	17 E questa cosa la riseppero e i Giudei tutti, e i Gentili, che abitavano in Efeso: ed entrò in tutti loro timore, e magnificavasi il nome del Signore Gesù.
18 Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s	18 E molti di quelli, che aveano creduto, venivano a confessare, e manifestare le opere loro.
19 and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.	19 E molti di quelli, che erano andati dietro a cose vane, portarono a furia i libri, e li bruciarono in presenza di tutti: e calcolato il valore di essi, trovaron la somma di cinquantamila denari.
20 In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.	20 Cosi cresceva forte, e si stabiliva la parola di Dio.
21 When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'	21 Terminate queste cose, propose Paolo in ispirito, girata la Macedonia, e l'Alcaja, di andare a Gerusalemme, dicendo: Dopo che io sarò stato là, bisogna, ch'io vegga anche Roma.
22 So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.	22 E mandati nella Macedonia due di quelli, che lo assistevano, Timoteo, ed Erasto, si rimase egli per un tempo nell'Asia.
23 It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.	23 E allora nacque non piccol tumulto per cagione della via del Signore.
24 A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,	24 Imperocché un certo orefice, per nome Demetrio, il quale faceva in argento dei templi di Diana, dava non poco guadagno agli artigiani.
25 cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.	25 Convocati i quali, e quelli, che di cose simili lavoravano, disse: O uomini, voi sapete, che da questo lavorio vien la nostra ricchezza;
26 Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.	26 E vedete, e sentite, che non solo in Efeso, ma in quasi tutta l'Asia, questo Paolo con sue persuasioni ha fatto cambiare di sentimento a molta gente, affermando, che non son dei que', che si fan con le mani.
27 This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'	27 E non solo è pericolo, che questa nostra professione vituperevole divenga, ma di più, il tempio della grande Diana sarà contato per niente, e comincerà a distruggersi la maestà di lei, cui l'Asia tutta, e il mondo adora.
28 This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'	28 Udito questo, coloro si riempirono di sdegno, e sclamaron, dicendo: Gran Diana degli Efesini.
29 The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre,dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.	29 E si riempiè la città di confusione, e corser tutti daccordo al teatro, strascinando Gaio, e Aristarco Macedoni, compagni di Paolo.
30 Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;	30 E volendo Paolo affacciarsi al popolo, nol permisero i discepoli.
31 in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.	31 Alcuni eziandio degli Asiarchi, che erangli amici, mandarono a pregarlo, che non si esponesse al teatro:
32 By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.	32 E quelli gridavano chi in un modo, e chi in un altro: essendo la adunanza in confusione, e i più non sapevano il perché si fossero adunati.
33 Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.	33 Fu poi tratto fuor della turba Alessandro, spingendolo avanti i Giudei. E Alessandro fatto segno con mano, che si tacessero, voleva dir sua ragione al popolo.
34 As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.	34 Ma subito che l'ebber conosciuto per Giudeo, si fecer di tutti una sola voce, che per quasi due ore gridavano: Gran Diana degli Efesini.
35 When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?	35 E avendo il segretario calmata la turba, disse: Uomini Efesini, e qual è uomo, che non sappia, che la città di Efeso è adoratrice della grande Diana, prole di Giove?
36 Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.	36 Non potendo adunque contraddirsi a questo, convenevol cosa si o, che voi vi acquietiate, e nulla facciate temerariamente.
37 These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.	37 Imperocché avete condotti questi uomini né sacrileghi, né bestemmiatori della vostra dea.
38 If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.	38 Che se Demetrio, e gli artefici, che sono con lui, hanno da dire contro qualcheduno, vi sono i giorni, ne' quali si tien ragione, e vi sono i proconsoli, se la disputino tra di loro.
39 And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.	39 Che se alcun' altra cosa voi bramate, in una legittima adunanza potrà decidersi.
40 We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.	40 Imperocché siamo in pericolo di essere accusati di sedizione perle cose di questo giorno: non essendovi chi abbia dato causa (di cui possiam render ragione) a questo sollevamento. E detto questo licenziò l'adunanza.
