1 It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.	1 Enquanto Apolo estava em Corinto, Paulo atravessou as províncias superiores e chegou a Éfeso, onde achou alguns discípulos e indagou deles:
2 When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'	2 Recebestes o Espírito Santo, quando abraçastes a fé? Responderam-lhe: Não, nem sequer ouvimos dizer que há um Espírito Santo!
3 He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'	3 Então em que batismo fostes batizados?, perguntou Paulo. Disseram: No batismo de João.
4 Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'	4 Paulo então replicou: João só dava um batismo de penitência, dizendo ao povo que cresse naquele que havia de vir depois dele, isto é, em Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,	5 Ouvindo isso, foram batizados em nome do Senhor Jesus.
6 and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.	6 E quando Paulo lhes impôs as mãos, o Espírito Santo desceu sobre eles, e falavam em línguas estranhas e profetizavam.
7 There were about twelve of these men in al .	7 Eram ao todo uns doze homens.
8 He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,	8 Paulo entrou na sinagoga e falou com desassombro por três meses, disputando e persuadindo-os acerca do Reino de Deus.
9 till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.	9 Mas, como alguns se endurecessem e não cressem, desacreditando a sua doutrina diante da multidão, apartou-se deles e reuniu à parte os discípulos, onde os ensinava diariamente na escola de um certo Tirano.
10 This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.	10 Isto durou dois anos, de tal maneira que todos os habitantes da Ásia, judeus e gentios, puderam ouvir a palavra do Senhor.
11 So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands	11 Deus fazia milagres extraordinários por intermédio de Paulo, de modo que lenços e outros panos que tinham tocado o seu corpo eram levados aos enfermos;
12 that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.	12 e afastavam-se deles as doenças e retiravam-se os espíritos malignos.
13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'	13 Alguns judeus exorcistas que percorriam vários lugares inventaram invocar o nome do Senhor Jesus sobre os que se achavam possessos dos espíritos malignos, com as palavras: Esconjuro-vos por Jesus, a quem Paulo prega.
14 Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.	14 Assim procediam os sete filhos de um judeu chamado Cevas, sumo sacerdote.
15 The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'	15 Mas o espírito maligno replicou-lhes: Conheço Jesus e sei quem é Paulo. Mas vós, quem sois?
16 and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another,and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.	16 Nisto o homem possuído do espírito maligno, saltando sobre eles, apoderou-se de dois deles e subjugou-os de tal maneira, que tiveram que fugir daquela casa feridos e com as roupas estraçalhadas.
17 Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.	17 Este caso tornou-se {em breve} conhecido de todos os judeus e gregos de Éfeso, e encheu-os de temor e engrandeceram o nome do Senhor Jesus.
18 Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s	18 Muitos dos que haviam acreditado vinham confessar e declarar as suas obras.
19 and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.	19 Muitos também, que tinham exercido artes mágicas, ajuntaram os seus livros e queimaram-nos diante de todos. Calculou-se o seu valor, e achou-se que montava a cinqüenta mil moedas de prata.
20 In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.	20 Foi assim que o poder do Senhor fez crescer a palavra e a tornou sempre mais eficaz.
21 When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'	21 Concluídas essas coisas, Paulo resolveu ir a Jerusalém, depois de atravessar a Macedônia e a Acaia. Depois de eu ter estado lá, disse ele, é necessário que veja também Roma.
22 So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.	22 Enviou à Macedônia dois dos seus auxiliares, Timóteo e Erasto, mas ele mesmo se demorou ainda por algum tempo na Ásia.
23 It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.	23 Por esse tempo, ocorreu um grande alvoroço a respeito do Evangelho.
24 A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,	24 Um ourives, chamado Demétrio, que fazia de prata templozinhos de Ártemis, dava muito a ganhar aos artífices.
25 cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.	25 Convocou-os, juntamente com os demais operários do mesmo ramo, e disse: Conheceis o lucro que nos resulta desta indústria.
26 Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.	26 Ora, estais vendo e ouvindo que não só em Éfeso, mas quase em toda a Ásia, esse Paulo tem persuadido e desencaminhado muita gente, dizendo que não são deuses os ídolos que são feitos por mãos de homens.
27 This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'	27 Daí não somente há perigo de que essa nossa corporação caia em descrédito, como também que o templo da grande Ártemis seja desconsiderado, e até mesmo seja despojada de sua majestade aquela que toda a Ásia e o mundo inteiro adoram.
28 This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'	28 Estas palavras encheram-nos de ira e puseram-se a gritar: Viva a Ártemis dos efésios!
29 The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre,dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.	29 A cidade alvoroçou-se e todos correram ao teatro levando consigo Caio e Aristarco, macedônios e companheiros de Paulo.
30 Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;	30 Paulo queria apresentar-se ao povo, mas os discípulos não o deixaram.
31 in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.	31 Até alguns dos asiarcas, que eram seus amigos, enviaram-lhe recado, pedindo que não se aventurasse a ir ao teatro.
32 By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.	32 Todos gritavam ao mesmo tempo. A assembléia era uma grande confusão e a maioria nem sabia por que se achavam ali reunidos.
33 Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.	33 Então fizeram sair do meio da turba Alexandre, que os judeus empurravam para a frente. Alexandre, fazendo sinal com a mão, queria dar satisfação ao povo.
34 As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.	34 Mas quando perceberam que ele era judeu, todos a uma voz gritaram pelo espaço de quase duas horas: Viva a Ártemis dos efésios!
35 When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?	35 Então o escrivão da cidade {veio} para apaziguar a multidão e disse: Efésios, que homem há que não saiba que a cidade de Éfeso cultua a grande Ártemis, e que a sua estátua caiu dos céus?
36 Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.	36 Se isso é incontestável, convém que vos sossegueis e nada façais inconsideradamente.
37 These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.	37 Estes homens, que aqui trouxestes, não são sacrílegos nem blasfemadores da vossa deusa.
38 If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.	38 Mas, se Demétrio e os outros artífices têm alguma queixa contra alguém, os tribunais estão abertos e aí estão os magistrados: institua-se um processo contra eles.
39 And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.	39 Se tendes reclamação a fazer, a assembléia legal decidirá.
40 We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.	40 Do que se deu hoje, até corremos risco de sermos acusados de rebelião, porque não há motivo algum que nos permita justificar este concurso.
	41 A estas palavras, dissolveu-se a aglomeração.
