1 It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.	1 - Mentre Apollo era a Corinto, Paolo, dopo aver percorse le province superiori, venne a Efeso; e, trovativi alcuni discepoli,
2 When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'	2 domandò loro: «Nel divenire credenti, riceveste voi lo Spirito Santo?». Gli risposero: «Non abbiamo neppur sentito dire che ci sia lo Spirito Santo».
3 He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'	3 E Paolo: «Che battesimo avete dunque ricevuto?». E quelli: «Il battestimo di Giovanni».
4 Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'	4 Allora Paolo disse: «Giovanni battezzò il popolo col battesimo di penitenza, dicendo che credessero in colui che stava per venire dopo di lui, cioè in Gesù».
5 When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,	5 Udito questo, furono battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesù;
6 and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.	6 e, dopo che Paolo ebbe loro imposte le mani, lo Spirito Santo scese su di loro, e parlavano in altre lingue e profetavano.

8 He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,	8 Poi entrato nella sinagoga, vi predicò liberamente per tre mesi, disputando e persuadendo intorno alle cose del regno di Dio.
9 till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.	9 Ma siccome alcuni si ostinavano a non credere, e sparlavano della dottrina del Signore dinanzi alla moltitudine, egli, separatosi da loro, riunì a parte i discepoli, e tenne ogni giorno adunanza d'istruzione nella scuola d'un certo Tiranno.
10 This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.	10 Cosa che continuò a fare per due anni, sì che tutti che abitavano nell'Asia, Giudei e Greci, udirono la parola del Signore.
11 So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands	11 E Dio operava miracoli straordinari per mano di Paolo;
12 that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.	12 al punto che prendevano asciugatoi e grembiuli, stati sul corpo di lui, e si mettevano su malati, i quali eran guariti dalle loro infermità e liberati dagli spiriti maligni.
13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'	13 E anche alcuni de' girovaghi esorcisti giudei si provarono a invocare il nome del Signore Gesù sopra di quelli che avevano degli spiriti cattivi, dicendo: «Io vi scongiuro per quel Gesù predicato da Paolo».
14 Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.	14 Erano a far questo sette figli di Sceva, capo sacerdote giudeo.
15 The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'	15 Ma lo spirito maligno dette questa risposta: «Conosco Gesù, e so chi è Paolo; ma voi chi siete?».
16 and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another,and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.	16 E l'uomo in cui era lo spirito pessimo, s'avventò su loro, li sopraffece ambedue e li malmenò con tal violenza da farli fuggire di quella casa ignudi e feriti.
17 Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.	17 Il fatto si riseppe da tutti, Giudei e Greci, che erano in Efeso, e tutti furon presi da spavento; e il nome del Signore Gesù era glorificato.
18 Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s	18 Molti di quelli che avevan creduto, venivano a confessare e dichiarare i loro atti;
19 and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.	19 e non pochi di quelli ch'erano andati dietro a simili arti, portarono i libri e li bruciarono alla presenza di tutti; e, calcolatone il prezzo, si trovò che saliva a cinquantamila denari d'argento.
20 In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.	20 Così la parola di Dio cresceva potentemente e si rafforzava.
21 When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'	21 Dopo questi fatti, Paolo stabilì in ispirito d'andare a Gerusalemme, passando per la Macedonia e l'Acaia. «Quando sarò stato là, diceva, bisogna ch'io veda anche Roma».
22 So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.	22 E, mandati nella Macedonia due de' suoi discepoli, Timoteo ed Erasto, egli si trattenne ancora in Asia per alcun tempo.
23 It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.	23 Durante il qual tempo, vi fu un tumulto non piccolo a causa della via del Signore.
24 A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,	24 Un argentiere di nome Demetrio faceva tempietti di Diana in argento, e procurava gran guadagno agli operai.
25 cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.	25 Egli li raccolse tutti, uniti con gli altri dello stesso mestiere e disse loro: «Amici, voi sapete che di questa nostra arte noi viviamo;
26 Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.	26 ora vedete e udite che questo Paolo sta persuadendo e sviando la moltitudine, non solo in Efeso ma in quasi tutta l'Asia, dicendo che quelli fatti con le mani non son dèi.
27 This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'	27 Onde non solo c'è pericolo che la nostra industria cada in discredito, ma che anche il tempio di Diana, la gran dea, non conti più nulla, e sia spogliata della sua maestà colei che tutta l'Asia e tutto il mondo adorano».
28 This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'	28 A udir tali parole, s'accesero tutti d'ira, e cominciarono a gridare: «Grande è la Diana degli Efesini!».
29 The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre,dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.	29 La città fu ripiena di confusione, e tutti d'accordo fecero impeto nel teatro, trascinandovi Gaio e Aristarco, macedoni, compagni di Paolo.
30 Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;	30 Anche Paolo voleva presentarsi al popolo, ma lo trattennero i discepoli.
31 in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.	31 Persino alcuni degli Asiarchi, amici suoi, mandarono a pregarlo che non s'avventurasse ad andare nel teatro.
32 By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.	32 Là, poi, chi gridava una cosa, chi un'altra. Era tutto una confusione, e i più non sapevano neppure il perchè di quella radunanza.
33 Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.	33 Allora presero di tra la folla un tal Alessandro, che i Giudei spingevano avanti. E Alessandro, fatto cenno con la mano, voleva ragionare al popolo.
34 As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.	34 Ma quando l'ebbero riconosciuto per giudeo, tutti, a una voce, e per quasi due ore, ripresero a gridare: «Grande è la Diana degli Efesini!».
35 When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?	35 Allora il segretario, riuscendo ad acquietare la folla, disse: «Uomini Efesini, chi è fra gli uomini che non sappia come la città di Efeso è adoratrice della grande Diana, prole di Giove?
36 Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.	36 Non potendosi dunque contradire a questo, voi dovete esser tranquilli, e nulla fare irragionevolmente.
37 These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.	37 Questi uomini, che avete menato qui, non sono sacrileghi nè bestemmiatori della vostra dea.
38 If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.	38 Che se Demetrio e quelli della sua industria hanno da dire contro qualcuno, ci sono le sedute forensi e i proconsoli; discutano tra di loro.
39 And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.	39 Se poi avete altro da regolare, potrà risolversi nell'assemblea legittima.
40 We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.	40 Chè, pe' fatti d'oggi, corriamo rischio d'essere accusati di sedizione, mancando ogni motivo a giustificare tanto concorso». E, detto questo licenziò l'adunanza.
