NEW JERUSALEMGREEK BIBLE
It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.1 Ενω δε ο Απολλως ητο εν Κορινθω, ο Παυλος αφου επερασε τα ανωτερικα μερη ηλθεν εις Εφεσον?
When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'2 ειπε προς αυτους?
He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'3 Και ειπε προς αυτους?
Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'4 Και ειπεν ο Παυλος?
When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,5 Ακουσαντες δε εβαπτισθησαν εις το ονομα του Κυριου Ιησου.
and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.6 Και αφου ο Παυλος επεθηκεν επ' αυτων τας χειρας, ηλθε το Πνευμα το Αγιον επ' αυτους, και ελαλουν γλωσσας και προεφητευον.
There were about twelve of these men in al .7 Ησαν δε παντες ουτοι ανδρες εως δωδεκα.
He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,8 Και εισελθων εις την συναγωγην ελαλει μετα παρρησιας, διαλεγομενος τρεις μηνας και πειθων εις τα περι της βασιλειας του Θεου.
till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.9 Επειδη ομως τινες εσκληρυνοντο και δεν επειθοντο, κακολογουντες την οδον του Κυριου ενωπιον του πληθους, απομακρυνθεις απ' αυτων, απεχωρισε τους μαθητας, διαλεγομενος καθ' ημεραν εν τω σχολειω τινος, οστις ελεγετο Τυραννος.
This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.10 Εγεινε δε τουτο επι δυο ετη, ωστε παντες οι κατοικουντες την Ασιαν ηκουσαν τον λογον του Κυριου Ιησου, Ιουδαιοι τε και Ελληνες.
So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands11 Και ο Θεος εκαμνε δια των χειρων του Παυλου θαυματα μεγαλα,
that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.12 ωστε και επι τους ασθενεις εφεροντο απο του σωματος αυτου μανδηλια η περιζωματα και εφευγον απ' αυτων αι ασθενειαι, και τα πνευματα τα πονηρα εξηρχοντο απ' αυτων.
But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'13 Και τινες απο των περιερχομενων εξορκιστων Ιουδαιων επεχειρησαν να προφερωσιν επι τους εχοντας τα πνευματα τα πονηρα το ονομα του Κυριου Ιησου, λεγοντες?
Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.14 Και οι πραττοντες τουτο ησαν επτα τινες υιοι Ιουδαιου αρχιερεως ονομαζομενου Σκευα.
The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'15 Αποκριθεν δε το πνευμα το πονηρον, ειπε? Τον Ιησουν γνωριζω και τον Παυλον εξευρω? σεις δε τινες εισθε;
and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another, and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.16 Και πηδησας επ' αυτους ο ανθρωπος, εις τον οποιον ητο το πνευμα το πονηρον, και νικησας αυτους, ισχυσε κατ' αυτων, ωστε γυμνοι και τετραυματισμενοι εφυγον εκ του οικου εκεινου.
Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.17 Και τουτο εγεινε γνωστον εις παντας, Ιουδαιους τε και Ελληνας, τους κατοικουντας την Εφεσον, και επεπεσε φοβος επι παντας αυτους, και εμεγαλυνετο το ονομα του Κυριου Ιησου?
Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s18 και πολλοι των πιστευσαντων ηρχοντο εξομολογουμενοι και φανερονοντες τας πραξεις αυτων.
and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.19 Πολλοι δε και εξ εκεινων, οιτινες εκαμνον τας μαγειας, φεροντες τα βιβλια αυτων κατεκαιον ενωπιον παντων?
In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.20 Ουτω κραταιως ηυξανε και ισχυεν ο λογος του Κυριου.
When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'21 Ως δε ετελεσθησαν ταυτα, ο Παυλος απεφασισεν εν εαυτω, αφου διελθη την Μακεδονιαν και Αχαιαν, να υπαγη εις την Ιερουσαλημ, ειπων οτι αφου υπαγω εκει, πρεπει να ιδω και την Ρωμην.
So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.22 Και αποστειλας εις την Μακεδονιαν δυο των υπηρετουντων αυτον, Τιμοθεον και Εραστον, αυτος εμεινε καιρον τινα εν τη Ασια.
It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.23 Εγεινε δε κατ' εκεινον τον καιρον ταραχη ουκ ολιγη περι ταυτης της οδου.
A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,24 Διοτι αργυροκοπος τις ονοματι Δημητριος, κατασκευαζων ναους αργυρους της Αρτεμιδος, επροξενει εις τους τεχνιτας ουκ ολιγον κερδος?
cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.25 τους οποιους συναθροισας και τους εργαζομενους τα τοιαυτα, ειπεν?
Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.26 και θεωρειτε και ακουετε οτι πολυν λαον ου μονον της Εφεσου, αλλα σχεδον πασης της Ασιας ο Παυλος ουτος επεισε και μετεβαλε, λεγων οτι δεν ειναι θεοι οι δια χειρων κατασκευαζομενοι.
This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'27 Και ου μονον η τεχνη ημων αυτη κινδυνευει να εξουδενωθη, αλλα και το ιερον της μεγαλης θεας Αρτεμιδος να λογισθη εις ουδεν, και μελλει μαλιστα να καταστραφη η μεγαλειοτης αυτης, την οποιαν ολη η Ασια και η οικουμενη σεβεται.
This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'28 Ακουσαντες δε και εμπλησθεντες θυμου, εκραζον λεγοντες?
The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre, dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.29 Και η πολις ολη επλησθη ταραχης, και ωρμησαν ομοθυμαδον εις το θεατρον, αφου συνηρπασαν τον Γαιον και Αρισταρχον τους Μακεδονας, συνοδοιπορους του Παυλου.
Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;30 Ενω δε ο Παυλος ηθελε να εισελθη εις τον δημον, οι μαθηται δεν αφινον αυτον,
in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.31 τινες δε και εκ των Ασιαρχων, οντες φιλοι αυτου, εστειλαν προς αυτον και παρεκαλουν να μη εκτεθη εις το θεατρον.
By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.32 Αλλοι μεν λοιπον εκραζον αλλο τι και αλλοι αλλο?
Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.33 Εκ δε του οχλου προηγαγον τον Αλεξανδρον, δια να λαληση, επειδη οι Ιουδαιοι επροβαλον αυτον?
As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.34 Αφου δε εγνωρισαν οτι ειναι Ιουδαιος, εγεινε μια φωνη εκ παντων των κραζοντων, εως δυο ωρας?
When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?35 Καθησυχασας δε ο γραμματευς τον οχλον, λεγει? Ανδρες Εφεσιοι, και τις ανθρωπος ειναι οστις δεν εξευρει οτι η πολις των Εφεσιων ειναι λατρις της μεγαλης θεας Αρτεμιδος και του Διοπετους αγαλματος;
Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.36 Επειδη λοιπον ταυτα ειναι αναντιρρητα, πρεπει σεις να ησυχαζητε και να μη πραττητε μηδεν προπετες.
These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.37 Διοτι εφερετε τους ανδρας τουτους, οιτινες ουτε ιεροσυλοι ειναι ουτε την θεαν σας βλασφημουσιν.
If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.38 Εαν μεν λοιπον ο Δημητριος και οι συντεχνιται αυτου εχωσι διαφοραν μετα τινος, υπαρχουσι δικασιμοι ημεραι και υπαρχουσιν ανθυπατοι, ας εγκαλεσωσιν αλληλους.
And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.39 Εαν δε ζητητε τι περι αλλων πραγματων, εν τη νομιμω συνελευσει θελει διαλυθη.
We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.40 Διοτι κινδυνευομεν να κατηγορηθωμεν ως στασιασται δια την σημερινην ταραχην, χωρις να υπαρχη μηδεμια αιτια, δια της οποιας θελομεν δυνηθη να δικαιολογησωμεν τον θορυβον τουτον.
