1 It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.	1 OR avvenne, mentre Apollo era in Corinto, che Paolo, avendo traversate le provincie alte, venne in Efeso; e trovati quivi alcuni discepoli, disse loro:
2 When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'	2 Avete voi ricevuto lo Spirito Santo, dopo che avete creduto? Ed essi gli dissero: Anzi non pure abbiamo udito se vi è uno Spirito Santo.
3 He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'	3 E Paolo disse loro: In che dunque siete stati battezzati? Ed essi dissero: Nel battesimo di Giovanni.
4 Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'	4 E Paolo disse: Certo, Giovanni battezzò del battesimo del ravvedimento, dicendo al popolo che credessero in colui che veniva dopo lui, cioè in Cristo Gesù.
5 When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,	5 E, udito questo, furono battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesù.
6 and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.	6 E, dopo che Paolo ebbe loro imposte le mani, lo Spirito Santo venne sopra loro, e parlavano lingue strane, e profetizzavano.

8 He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,	8 Poi egli entrò nella sinagoga, e parlava francamente, ragionando per lo spazio di tre mesi, e persuadendo le cose appartenenti al regno di Dio.
9 till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.	9 Ma, come alcuni s’induravano, ed erano increduli, dicendo male di quella professione, in presenza della moltitudine, egli, dipartitosi da loro, separò i discepoli, facendo ogni dì sermone nella scuola d’un certo Tiranno.
10 This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.	10 E questo continuò lo spazio di due anni; talchè tutti coloro che abitavano nell’Asia, Giudei e Greci, udirono la parola del Signor Gesù.
11 So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands	11 E Iddio faceva delle non volgari potenti operazioni per le mani di Paolo.
12 that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.	12 Talchè eziandio d’in sul suo corpo si portavano sopra gl’infermi degli sciugatoi, e de’ grembiuli; e le infermità si partivano da loro, e gli spiriti maligni uscivan di loro
13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'	13 Or alcuni degli esorcisti Giudei, che andavano attorno, tentarono d’invocare il nome del Signor Gesù sopra coloro che aveano gli spiriti maligni, dicendo: Noi vi scongiuriamo per Gesù, il quale Paolo predica.
14 Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.	14 E coloro che facevano questo eran certi figliuoli di Sceva, Giudeo, principal sacerdote, in numero di sette.
15 The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'	15 Ma lo spirito maligno, rispondendo, disse: Io conosco Gesù, e so chi è Paolo; ma voi chi siete?
16 and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another,and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.	16 E l’uomo che avea lo spirito maligno si avventò a loro; e sopraffattili, fece loro forza; talchè se ne fuggiron di quella casa, nudi e feriti.
17 Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.	17 E questo venne a notizia a tutti i Giudei e Greci che abitavano in Efeso; e timore cadde sopra tutti loro, e il nome del Signor Gesù era magnificato.
18 Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s	18 E molti di coloro che aveano creduto venivano, confessando e dichiarando le cose che aveano fatte.
19 and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.	19 Molti ancora di coloro che aveano esercitate le arti curiose, portarono insieme i libri, e li arsero in presenza di tutti; e fatta ragion del prezzo di quelli, si trovò che ascendeva a cinquantamila denari d’argento.
20 In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.	20 Così la parola di Dio cresceva potentemente, e si rinforzava
21 When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'	21 Ora, dopo che queste cose furono compiute, Paolo si mise nell’animo di andare in Gerusalemme, passando per la Macedonia, e per l’Acaia, dicendo: Dopo che io sarò stato quivi, mi conviene ancora veder Roma.
22 So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.	22 E mandati in Macedonia due di coloro che gli ministravano, cioè Timoteo ed Erasto, egli dimorò ancora alquanto tempo in Asia.
23 It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.	23 Or in quel tempo nacque non piccol turbamento a proposito della via del Signore.
24 A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,	24 Perciocchè un certo chiamato per nome Demetrio, intagliator d’argento, che faceva de’ piccoli tempii di Diana d’argento, portava gran profitto agli artefici.
25 cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.	25 Costui, raunati quelli, e tutti gli altri che lavoravano di cotali cose, disse: Uomini, voi sapete che dall’esercizio di quest’arte viene il nostro guadagno.
26 Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.	26 Or voi vedete ed udite, che questo Paolo, con le sue persuasioni, ha sviata gran moltitudine, non solo in Efeso, ma quasi in tutta l’Asia, dicendo che quelli non son dii, che son fatti di lavoro di mani.
27 This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'	27 E non vi è solo pericolo per noi, che quest’arte particolare sia discreditata; ma ancora che il tempio della gran dea Diana sia reputato per nulla; e che la maestà d’essa, la qual tutta l’Asia, anzi tutto il mondo adora, non sia abbattuta.
28 This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'	28 Ed essi, udite queste cose, ed essendo ripieni d’ira, gridarono, dicendo: Grande è la Diana degli Efesi.
29 The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre,dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.	29 E tutta la città fu ripiena di confusione; e tratti a forza Gaio, ed Aristarco, Macedoni, compagni del viaggio di Paolo, corsero di pari consentimento a furore nel teatro.
30 Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;	30 Or Paolo voleva presentarsi al popolo; ma i discepoli non gliel permisero.
31 in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.	31 Alcuni eziandio degli Asiarchi, che gli erano amici, mandarono a lui, pregandolo che non si presentasse nel teatro.
32 By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.	32 Gli uni adunque gridavano una cosa, gli altri un’altra; perciocchè la raunanza era confusa; ed i più non sapevano per qual cagione fosser raunati.
33 Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.	33 Ora, d’infra la moltitudine fu prodotto Alessandro, spingendolo i Giudei innanzi. Ed Alessandro, fatto cenno con la mano, voleva arringare al popolo a lor difesa.
34 As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.	34 Ma, quando ebber riconosciuto ch’egli era Giudeo, si fece un grido da tutti, che gridarono lo spazio d’intorno a due ore: Grande è la Diana degli Efesi.
35 When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?	35 Ma il cancelliere, avendo acquetata la turba, disse: Uomini Efesi, chi è pur l’uomo, che non sappia che la città degli Efesi è la sagrestana della gran dea Diana, e dell’immagine caduta da Giove?
36 Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.	36 Essendo adunque queste cose fuor di contradizione, conviene che voi vi acquetiate, e non facciate nulla di precipitato.
37 These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.	37 Poichè avete menati qua questi uomini, i quali non sono nè sacrileghi, nè bestemmiatori della vostra dea.
38 If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.	38 Se dunque Demetrio, e gli artefici che son con lui, hanno alcuna cosa contro ad alcuno, si tengono le corti, e vi sono i proconsoli; facciansi eglino citar gli uni gli altri.
39 And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.	39 E se richiedete alcuna cosa intorno ad altri affari, ciò si risolverà nella raunanza legittima.
40 We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.	40 Perciocchè noi siamo in pericolo d’essere accusati di sedizione per lo giorno d’oggi; non essendovi ragione alcuna, per la quale noi possiamo render conto di questo concorso.
	41 E, dette queste cose, licenziò la raunanza
