1 It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.	1 Tandis qu'Apollos était à Corinthe, Paul, après avoir traversé le haut-pays, arriva à Ephèse. Il ytrouva quelques disciples
2 When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'	2 et leur dit: "Avez-vous reçu l'Esprit Saint quand vous avez embrassé la foi?" Ils lui répondirent:"Mais nous n'avons même pas entendu dire qu'il y a un Esprit Saint."
3 He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'	3 Et lui: "Quel baptême avez-vous donc reçu"? - "Le baptême de Jean", répondirent-ils.
4 Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'	4 Paul dit alors: "Jean a baptisé d'un baptême de repentance, en disant au peuple de croire en celui quiviendrait après lui, c'est-à-dire en Jésus."
5 When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,	5 A ces mots, ils se firent baptiser au nom du Seigneur Jésus;
6 and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.	6 et quand Paul leur eut imposé les mains, l'Esprit Saint vint sur eux, et ils se mirent à parler enlangues et à prophétiser.
7 There were about twelve of these men in al .	7 Ces hommes étaient en tout une douzaine.
8 He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,	8 Paul se rendit à la synagogue et, pendant trois mois, y parla avec assurance. Il entretenait sesauditeurs du Royaume de Dieu et cherchait à les persuader.
9 till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.	9 Certains cependant, endurcis et incrédules, décriaient la Voie devant l'assistance. Il rompit alors aveceux et prit à part les disciples. Chaque jour, il les entretenait dans l'école de Tyrannos.
10 This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.	10 Il en fut ainsi deux années durant, en sorte que tous les habitants de l'Asie, Juifs et Grecs, purententendre la parole du Seigneur.
11 So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands	11 Dieu opérait par les mains de Paul des miracles peu banals,
12 that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.	12 à tel point qu'il suffisait d'appliquer sur les malades des mouchoirs ou des linges qui avaient touchéson corps: alors les maladies les quittaient et les esprits mauvais s'en allaient.
13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'	13 Or quelques exorcistes juifs ambulants s'essayèrent à prononcer, eux aussi, le nom du SeigneurJésus sur ceux qui avaient des esprits mauvais. Ils disaient: "Je vous adjure par ce Jésus que Paul proclame."
14 Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.	14 Il y avait sept fils de Scéva, un grand prêtre juif, qui agissaient de la sorte.
15 The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'	15 Mais l'esprit mauvais leur répliqua: "Jésus, je le connais, et Paul, je sais qui c'est. Mais vous autres,qui êtes-vous?"
16 and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another,and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.	16 Et se jetant sur eux, l'homme possédé de l'esprit mauvais les maîtrisa les uns et les autres et lesmalmena si bien que c'est nus et couverts de blessures qu'ils s'échappèrent de cette maison.
17 Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.	17 Tous les habitants d'Ephèse, Juifs et Grecs, surent la chose. La crainte alors s'empara de tous et lenom du Seigneur Jésus fut glorifié.
18 Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s	18 Beaucoup de ceux qui étaient devenus croyants venaient faire leurs aveux et dévoiler leurspratiques.
19 and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.	19 Bon nombre de ceux qui s'étaient adonnés à la magie apportaient leurs livres et les brûlaient enprésence de tous. On en estima la valeur: cela faisait 50.000 pièces d'argent.
20 In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.	20 Ainsi la parole du Seigneur croissait et s'affermissait puissamment.
21 When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'	21 Après ces événements, Paul forma le projet de traverser la Macédoine et l'Achaïe pour gagnerJérusalem. "Après avoir été là, disait-il, il me faut voir également Rome."
22 So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.	22 Il envoya alors en Macédoine deux de ses auxiliaires, Timothée et Eraste; pour lui, il resta quelquetemps encore en Asie.
23 It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.	23 Vers ce temps-là, un tumulte assez grave se produisit à propos de la Voie.
24 A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,	24 Un certain Démétrius, qui était orfèvre et fabriquait des temples d'Artémis en argent, procurait ainsiaux artisans beaucoup de travail.
25 cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.	25 Il les réunit, ainsi que les ouvriers des métiers similaires, et leur dit: "Mes amis, c'est à cetteindustrie, vous le savez, que nous devons notre bien-être.
26 Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.	26 Or, vous le voyez et l'entendez dire, non seulement à Ephèse, mais dans presque toute l'Asie, cePaul, par ses raisons, a entraîné à sa suite une foule considérable, en affirmant qu'ils ne sont pas dieux, ceux quisont sortis de la main des hommes.
27 This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'	27 Cela risque non seulement de jeter le discrédit sur notre profession, mais encore de faire compterpour rien le sanctuaire même de la grande déesse Artémis, pour finir par dépouiller de son prestige celle querévèrent toute l'Asie et le monde entier."
28 This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'	28 A ces mots, remplis de colère, ils se mirent à crier: "Grande est l'Artémis des Ephésiens!"
29 The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre,dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.	29 Le désordre gagna la ville entière. On se précipita en masse au théâtre, y entraînant lesMacédoniens Gaïus et Aristarque, compagnons de voyage de Paul.
30 Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;	30 Paul, lui, voulait se présenter devant l'assemblée du peuple, mais les disciples l'en empêchèrent.
31 in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.	31 Quelques asiarques même, qui l'avaient en amitié, le firent instamment prier de ne pas s'exposer enallant au théâtre.
32 By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.	32 Les uns criaient une chose, les autres une autre. L'assemblée était en pleine confusion, et la plupartne savaient même pas pourquoi on s'était réuni.
33 Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.	33 Des gens de la foule persuadèrent Alexandre, que les Juifs poussaient en avant. Alexandre, ayantfait signe de la main, voulait s'expliquer devant le peuple.
34 As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.	34 Mais quand on eut reconnu que c'était un Juif, tous se mirent à crier d'une seule voix, pendant prèsde deux heures: "Grande est l'Artémis des Ephésiens!"
35 When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?	35 Enfin le chancelier calma la foule et dit: "Ephésiens, quel homme au monde ignore que la villed'Ephèse est la gardienne du temple de la grande Artémis et de sa statue tombée du ciel?
36 Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.	36 Cela étant donc sans conteste, il faut vous tenir tranquilles et ne rien faire d'inconsidéré.
37 These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.	37 Vous avez amené ces hommes: ils ne sont coupables ni de sacrilège ni de blasphème envers notredéesse.
38 If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.	38 Que si Démétrius et les artisans qui sont avec lui ont des griefs contre quelqu'un, il y a desaudiences, il y a des proconsuls: qu'ils portent plainte.
39 And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.	39 Et si vous avez quelque autre affaire à débattre, on la résoudra dans l'assemblée régulière.
40 We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.	40 Aussi bien risquons-nous d'être accusés de sédition pour ce qui s'est passé aujourd'hui, vu qu'iln'existe aucun motif qui nous permette de justifier cet attroupement." Et sur ces mots, il congédia l'assemblée.
