NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth,1 Post haec discedens ab Athe nis venit Corinthum.
where he met a Jew called Aquila whose family came from Pontus. He and his wife Priscil a hadrecently left Italy because an edict of Claudius had expel ed al the Jews from Rome. Paul went to visit them,2 Et in veniens quendamIudaeum nomine Aquilam, Ponticum genere, qui nuper venerat ab Italia, etPriscillam uxorem eius, eo quod praecepisset Claudius discedere omnes Iudaeos aRoma, accessit ad eos
and when he found they were tentmakers, of the same trade as himself, he lodged with them, and theyworked together.3 et, quia eiusdem erat artis, manebat apud eos etoperabatur; erant autem scenofactoriae artis.
Every Sabbath he used to hold debates in the synagogues, trying to convert Jews as wel as Greeks.4 Disputabat autem in synagoga peromne sabbatum suadebatque Iudaeis et Graecis.
After Silas and Timothy had arrived from Macedonia, Paul devoted al his time to preaching, declaringto the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.5 Cum venissent autem de Macedonia Silas et Timotheus, instabat verbo Paulustestificans Iudaeis esse Christum Iesum.
When they turned against him and started to insult him, he took his cloak and shook it out in front ofthem, saying, 'Your blood be on your own heads; from now on I wil go to the gentiles with a clear conscience.'6 Contradicentibus autem eis etblasphemantibus, excutiens vestimenta dixit ad eos: “ Sanguis vester supercaput vestrum! Mundus ego. Ex hoc nunc ad gentes vadam ”.
Then he left the synagogue and moved to the house next door that belonged to a worshipper of Godcal ed Justus.7 Et migrans indeintravit in domum cuiusdam nomine Titi Iusti, colentis Deum, cuius domus eratconiuncta synagogae.
Crispus, president of the synagogue, and his whole household, al became believers in the Lord. ManyCorinthians when they heard this became believers and were baptised.8 Crispus autem archisynagogus credidit Domino cum omnidomo sua, et multi Corinthiorum audientes credebant et baptizabantur.
One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision, 'Be fearless; speak out and do not keep silence:9 Dixit autem Dominus nocte per visionem Paulo: “ Noli timere, sed loquere etne taceas,
I am with you. I have so many people that belong to me in this city that no one wil attempt to hurtyou.'10 quia ego sum tecum, et nemo apponetur tibi, ut noceat te, quoniampopulus est mihi multus in hac civitate ”.
So Paul stayed there preaching the word of God among them for eighteen months.11 Sedit autem annum et sex menses docens apud eos verbum Dei.
But while Gal io was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a concerted attack on Paul and brought himbefore the tribunal, saying,12 Gallione autem proconsule Achaiae, insurrexerunt uno animo Iudaei in Paulumet adduxerunt eum ad tribunal
'We accuse this man of persuading people to worship God in a way that breaks the Law.'13 dicentes: “ Contra legem hic persuadethominibus colere Deum ”.
Before Paul could open his mouth, Gal io said to the Jews, 'Listen, you Jews. If this were amisdemeanour or a crime, it would be in order for me to listen to your plea;14 Incipiente autem Paulo aperire os, dixit Gallio adIudaeos: “ Si quidem esset iniquum aliquid aut facinus pessimum, o Iudaei,merito vos sustinerem;
but if it is only quibbles about words and names, and about your own Law, then you must deal with ityourselves -- I have no intention of making legal decisions about these things.'15 si vero quaestiones sunt de verbo et nominibus et legevestra, vos ipsi videritis; iudex ego horum nolo esse ”.
Then he began to hustle them out of the court,16 Et minavit eos atribunali.
and at once they all turned on Sosthenes, the synagogue president, and beat him in front of thetribunal. Gal io refused to take any notice at al .17 Apprehendentes autem omnes Sosthenen, principem synagogae,percutiebant ante tribunal; et nihil horum Gallioni curae erat.
After staying on for some time, Paul took leave of the brothers and sailed for Syria, accompanied byPriscil a and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had his hair cut off, because of a vow he had made.18 Paulus vero, cum adhuc sustinuisset dies multos, fratribus valefaciensnavigabat Syriam, et cum eo Priscilla et Aquila, qui sibi totonderat inCenchreis caput; habebat enim votum.
When they reached Ephesus, he left them, but first he went alone to the synagogue to debate with theJews.19 Deveneruntque Ephesum, et illos ibireliquit; ipse vero ingressus synagogam disputabat cum Iudaeis.
They asked him to stay longer, but he declined,20 Rogantibusautem eis, ut ampliore tempore maneret, non consensit,
though when he took his leave he said, 'I wil come back another time, God wil ing.' Then he sailedfrom Ephesus.21 sed valefaciens etdicens: “ Iterum revertar ad vos Deo volente ”, navigavit ab Epheso;
He landed at Caesarea and went up to greet the church. Then he came down to Antioch22 etdescendens Caesaream ascendit et salutavit ecclesiam et descendit Antiochiam.
where he spent a short time before continuing his journey through the Galatian country and thenthrough Phrygia, encouraging al the followers.23 Et facto ibi aliquanto tempore, profectus est perambulans ex ordine Galaticamregionem et Phrygiam, confirmans omnes discipulos.
An Alexandrian Jew named Apol os now arrived in Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, with a soundknowledge of the scriptures, and yet,24 Iudaeus autem quidam Apollo nomine, Alexandrinus natione, vir eloquens,devenit Ephesum, potens in Scripturis.
though he had been given instruction in the Way of the Lord and preached with great spiritual fervourand was accurate in al the details he taught about Jesus, he had experienced only the baptism of John.25 Hic erat catechizatus viam Domini; etfervens spiritu loquebatur et docebat diligenter ea, quae sunt de Iesu, scienstantum baptisma Ioannis.
He began to teach fearlessly in the synagogue and, when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, theyattached themselves to him and gave him more detailed instruction about the Way.26 Hic ergo coepit fiducialiter agere in synagoga; quemcum audissent Priscilla et Aquila, assumpserunt eum et diligentius exposueruntei viam Dei.
When Apol os thought of crossing over to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote asking thedisciples to welcome him. When he arrived there he was able by God's grace to help the believers considerably27 Cum autem vellet transire in Achaiam, exhortati fratresscripserunt discipulis, ut susciperent eum; qui cum venisset, contulit multumhis, qui crediderant per gratiam;
by the energetic way he refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating from the scriptures that Jesus wasthe Christ.28 vehementer enim Iudaeos revincebat publice,ostendens per Scripturas esse Christum Iesum.
