In the church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon cal ed Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.1 Now there were, in the Church at Antioch, prophets and teachers, among whom were Barnabas, and Simon, who was called the Black, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manahen, who was the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, 'I wantBarnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have cal ed them.'2 Now as they were ministering for the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said to them: “Separate Saul and Barnabas for me, for the work for which I have selected them.”
So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off.3 Then, fasting and praying and imposing their hands upon them, they sent them away.
So these two, sent on their mission by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there set sail forCyprus.4 And having been sent by the Holy Spirit, they went to Seleucia. And from there they sailed to Cyprus.
They landed at Salamis and proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; John acted astheir assistant.5 And when they had arrived at Salamis, they were preaching the Word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they also had John in the ministry.
They travel ed the whole length of the island, and at Paphos they came in contact with a Jewishmagician and false prophet cal ed Bar-Jesus.6 And when they had traveled throughout the entire island, even to Paphos, they found a certain man, a magician, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-Jesu.
He was one of the attendants of the proconsul Sergius Paulus, who was an extremely intelligent man.The proconsul summoned Barnabas and Saul and asked to hear the word of God,7 And he was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man. This man, summoning Barnabas and Saul, wanted to hear the Word of God.
but Elymas the magician (this is what his name means in Greek) tried to stop them so as to prevent theproconsul's conversion to the faith.8 But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) stood against them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the Faith.
Then Saul, whose other name is Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked at him intently9 Then Saul, who is also called Paul, having been filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him,
and said, 'You utter fraud, you impostor, you son of the devil, you enemy of al uprightness, will younot stop twisting the straightforward ways of the Lord?10 and he said: “So full of every deceit and of all falsehoods, son of the devil, enemy of all justice, you never cease to subvert the righteous ways of the Lord!
Now watch how the hand of the Lord wil strike you: you wil be blind, and for a time you wil not seethe sun.' That instant, everything went misty and dark for him, and he groped about to find someone to lead himby the hand.11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you. And you will be blinded, not seeing the sun for a length of time.” And immediately a fog and a darkness fell over him. And wandering around, he was seeking someone who might lead him by the hand.
The proconsul, who had watched everything, became a believer, being much struck by what he hadlearnt about the Lord.12 Then the proconsul, when he had seen what was done, believed, being in wonder over the doctrine of the Lord.
Paul and his companions went by sea from Paphos to Perga in Pamphylia where John left them to goback to Jerusalem.13 And when Paul and those who were with him had sailed from Paphos, they arrived at Perga in Pamphylia. Then John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem.
The others carried on from Perga til they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to synagogue onthe Sabbath and took their seats.14 Yet truly, they, traveling on from Perga, arrived at Antioch in Pisidia. And upon entering the synagogue on the Sabbath day, they sat down.
After the passages from the Law and the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagoguesent them a message, 'Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation, please do so.'15 Then, after the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent to them, saying: “Noble brothers, if there is in you any word of exhortation to the people, speak.”
Paul stood up, raised his hand for silence and began to speak: 'Men of Israel, and fearers of God,listen!16 Then Paul, rising up and motioning for silence with his hand, said: “Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen closely.
The God of our nation Israel chose our ancestors and made our people great when they were living inEgypt, a land not their own; then by divine power he led them out17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people, when they were settlers in the land of Egypt. And with an exalted arm, he led them away from there.
and for about forty years took care of them in the desert.18 And throughout a time of forty years, he endured their behavior in the desert.
When he had destroyed seven nations in Canaan, he put them in possession of their land19 And by destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he divided their land among them by lot,
for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges, down to the prophet Samuel.20 after about four hundred and fifty years. And after these things, he gave them judges, even until the prophet Samuel.
Then they demanded a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin. After forty years,21 And later on, they petitioned for a king. And God gave them Saul, the son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
he deposed him and raised up David to be king, whom he attested in these words, "I have foundDavid son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who wil perform my entire wil ."22 And having removed him, he raised up for them king David. And offering testimony about him, he said, ‘I have found David, the son of Jesse, to be a man according to my own heart, who will accomplish all that I will.’
To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour,23 From his offspring, according to the Promise, God has brought Jesus the Savior to Israel.
whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the wholepeople of Israel.24 John was preaching, before the face of his advent, a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
Before John ended his course he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; there is someonecoming after me whose sandal I am not fit to undo."25 Then, when John completed his course, he was saying: ‘I am not the one you consider me to be. For behold, one arrives after me, the shoes of whose feet I am not worthy to loosen.’
'My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and al you godfearers, this message of salvation is meant foryou.26 Noble brothers, sons of the stock of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, it is to you the Word of this salvation has been sent.
What the people of Jerusalem and their rulers did, though they did not realise it, was in f27 For those who were living in Jerusalem, and its rulers, heeding neither him, nor the voices of the Prophets that are read on every Sabbath, fulfilled these by judging him.
Though they found nothing to justify his execution, they condemned him and asked Pilate to have himput to death.28 And although they found no case for death against him, they petitioned Pilate, so that they might put him to death.
When they had carried out everything that scripture foretells about him they took him down from thetree and buried him in a tomb.29 And when they had fulfilled everything that had been written about him, taking him down from the tree, they placed him in a tomb.
But God raised him from the dead,30 Yet truly, God raised him up from the dead on the third day.
and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and itis these same companions of his who are now his witnesses before our people.31 And he was seen for many days by those who went up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who even now are his witnesses to the people.
'We have come here to tel you the good news that the promise made to our ancestors has comeabout.32 And we are announcing to you that the Promise, which was made to our fathers,
God has fulfil ed it to their children by raising Jesus from the dead. As scripture says in the psalms: You are my son: today I have fathered you.33 has been fulfilled by God for our children by raising up Jesus, just as it has been written in the second Psalm also: ‘You are my Son. This day I have begotten you.’
The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to return to corruption, is no more than what hehad declared: To you I shal give the holy things promised to David which can be relied upon.34 Now, since he raised him from the dead, so as to no longer return to corruption, he has said this: ‘I will give to you the holy things of David, the faithful one.’
This is also why it says in another text: You wil not al ow your Holy One to see corruption.35 And also then, in another place, he says: ‘You will not allow your Holy One to see corruption.’
Now when David in his own time had served God's purposes he died; he was buried with hisancestors and has certainly seen corruption.36 For David, when he had ministered to his generation in accordance with the will of God, fell asleep, and he was placed next to his fathers, and he saw corruption.
The one whom God has raised up, however, has not seen corruption.37 Yet truly, he whom God has raised from the dead has not seen corruption.
'My brothers, I want you to realise that it is through him that forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed toyou. Through him justification from al sins from which the Law of Moses was unable to justify38 Therefore, let it be known to you, noble brothers, that through him is announced to you remission from sins and from everything by which you were not able to be justified in the law of Moses.
is being offered to every believer.39 In him, all who believe are justified.
'So be careful -- or what the prophets say wil happen to you.40 Therefore, be careful, lest what was said by the Prophets may overwhelm you:
Cast your eyes around you, mockers; be amazed, and perish! For I am doing something in your owndays that you would never believe if you were told of it.'41 ‘You despisers! Look, and wonder, and be scattered! For I am working a deed in your days, a deed which you would not believe, even if someone were to explain it to you.’ ”
As they left they were urged to continue this preaching the fol owing Sabbath.42 Then, as they were departing, they asked them if, on the following Sabbath, they might speak these words to them.
When the meeting broke up many Jews and devout converts fol owed Paul and Barnabas, and in theirtalks with them Paul and Barnabas urged them to remain faithful to the grace God had given them.43 And when the synagogue had been dismissed, many among the Jews and the new worshipers were following Paul and Barnabas. And they, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
The next Sabbath almost the whole town assembled to hear the word of God.44 Yet truly, on the following Sabbath, nearly the entire city came together to hear the Word of God.
When they saw the crowds, the Jews, fil ed with jealousy, used blasphemies to contradict everythingPaul said.45 Then the Jews, seeing the crowds, were filled with envy, and they, blaspheming, contradicted the things that were being said by Paul.
Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out fearlessly. 'We had to proclaim the word of God to you first, butsince you have rejected it, since you do not think yourselves worthy of eternal life, here and now we turn to thegentiles.46 Then Paul and Barnabas said firmly: “It was necessary to speak the Word of God first to you. But because you reject it, and so judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.
For this is what the Lord commanded us to do when he said: I have made you a light to the nations,so that my salvation may reach the remotest parts of the earth.'47 For so has the Lord instructed us: ‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, so that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”
It made the gentiles very happy to hear this and they gave thanks to the Lord for his message; all whowere destined for eternal life became believers.48 Then the Gentiles, upon hearing this, were gladdened, and they were glorifying the Word of the Lord. And as many as believed were preordained to eternal life.
Thus the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.49 Now the word of the Lord was disseminated throughout the entire region.
But the Jews worked on some of the devout women of the upper classes and the leading men of thecity; they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expel ed them from their territory.50 But the Jews incited some devout and honest women, and the leaders of the city. And they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas. And they drove them away from their parts.
So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went off to Iconium; but theconverts were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.51 But they, shaking the dust from their feet against them, went on to Iconium.
The disciples were likewise filled with gladness and with the Holy Spirit.
