NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
In the church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon cal ed Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.1 Now there were in the church which was at Antioch, prophets and doctors, among whom was Barnabas, and Simon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manahen, who was the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, 'I wantBarnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have cal ed them.'2 And as they were ministering to the Lord, and fasting, the Holy Ghost said to them: Separate me Saul and Barnabas, for the work whereunto I have taken them.
So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off.3 Then they, fasting and praying, and imposing their hands upon them, sent them away.
So these two, sent on their mission by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there set sail forCyprus.4 So they being sent by the Holy Ghost, went to Seleucia: and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.
They landed at Salamis and proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; John acted astheir assistant.5 And when they were come to Salamina, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John also in the ministry.
They travel ed the whole length of the island, and at Paphos they came in contact with a Jewishmagician and false prophet cal ed Bar-Jesus.6 And when they had gone through the whole island, as far as Paphos, they found a certain man, a magician, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-jesu:
He was one of the attendants of the proconsul Sergius Paulus, who was an extremely intelligent man.The proconsul summoned Barnabas and Saul and asked to hear the word of God,7 Who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, a prudent man. He sending for Barnabas and Saul, desired to hear the word of God.
but Elymas the magician (this is what his name means in Greek) tried to stop them so as to prevent theproconsul's conversion to the faith.8 But Elymas the magician (for so his name is interpreted) withstood them, seeking to turn away the proconsul from the faith.
Then Saul, whose other name is Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked at him intently9 Then Saul, otherwise Paul, filled with the Holy Ghost, looking upon him,
and said, 'You utter fraud, you impostor, you son of the devil, you enemy of al uprightness, will younot stop twisting the straightforward ways of the Lord?10 Said: O full of all guile, and of all deceit, child of the devil, enemy of all justice, thou ceasest not to pervert the right ways of the Lord.
Now watch how the hand of the Lord wil strike you: you wil be blind, and for a time you wil not seethe sun.' That instant, everything went misty and dark for him, and he groped about to find someone to lead himby the hand.11 And now behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a time. And immediately there fell a mist and darkness upon him, and going about, he sought some one to lead him by the hand.
The proconsul, who had watched everything, became a believer, being much struck by what he hadlearnt about the Lord.12 Then the proconsul, when he had seen what was done, believed, admiring at the doctrine of the Lord.
Paul and his companions went by sea from Paphos to Perga in Pamphylia where John left them to goback to Jerusalem.13 Now when Paul and they that were with him had sailed from Paphos, they came to Perge in Pamphylia. And John departing from them, returned to Jerusalem.
The others carried on from Perga til they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to synagogue onthe Sabbath and took their seats.14 But they passing through Perge, came to Antioch in Pisidia: and entering into the synagogue on the sabbath day, they sat down.
After the passages from the Law and the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagoguesent them a message, 'Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation, please do so.'15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying: Ye men, brethren, if you have any word of exhortation to make to the people, speak.
Paul stood up, raised his hand for silence and began to speak: 'Men of Israel, and fearers of God,listen!16 Then Paul rising up, and with his hand bespeaking silence, said: Ye men of Israel, and you that fear God, give ear.
The God of our nation Israel chose our ancestors and made our people great when they were living inEgypt, a land not their own; then by divine power he led them out17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they were sojourners in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought them out from thence,
and for about forty years took care of them in the desert.18 And for the space of forty years endured their manners in the desert.
When he had destroyed seven nations in Canaan, he put them in possession of their land19 And destroying seven nations in the land of Chanaan, divided their land among them, by lot,
for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges, down to the prophet Samuel.20 As it were, after four hundred and fifty years: and after these things, he gave unto them judges, until Samuel the prophet.
Then they demanded a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin. After forty years,21 And after that they desired a king: and God gave them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, forty years.
he deposed him and raised up David to be king, whom he attested in these words, "I have foundDavid son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who wil perform my entire wil ."22 And when he had removed him, he raised them up David to be king: to whom giving testimony, he said: I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man according to my own heart, who shall do all my wills.
To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour,23 Of this man's seed God according to his promise, hath raised up to Israel a Saviour, Jesus:
whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the wholepeople of Israel.24 John first preaching, before his coming, the baptism of penance to all the people of Israel.
Before John ended his course he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; there is someonecoming after me whose sandal I am not fit to undo."25 And when John was fulfilling his course, he said: I am not he, whom you think me to be: but behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.
'My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and al you godfearers, this message of salvation is meant foryou.26 Men, brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you fear God, to you the word of this salvation is sent.
What the people of Jerusalem and their rulers did, though they did not realise it, was in f27 For they that inhabited Jerusalem, and the rulers thereof, not knowing him, nor the voices of the prophets, which are read every sabbath, judging him have fulfilled them.
Though they found nothing to justify his execution, they condemned him and asked Pilate to have himput to death.28 And finding no cause of death in him, they desired of Pilate, that they might kill him.
When they had carried out everything that scripture foretells about him they took him down from thetree and buried him in a tomb.29 And when they had fulfilled all things that were written of him, taking him down from the tree, they laid him in a sepulchre.
But God raised him from the dead,30 But God raised him up from the dead the third day:
and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and itis these same companions of his who are now his witnesses before our people.31 Who was seen for many days, by them who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who to this present are his witnesses to the people.
'We have come here to tel you the good news that the promise made to our ancestors has comeabout.32 And we declare unto you, that the promise which was made to our fathers,
God has fulfil ed it to their children by raising Jesus from the dead. As scripture says in the psalms: You are my son: today I have fathered you.33 This same God hath fulfilled to our children, raising up Jesus, as in the second psalm also is written: Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to return to corruption, is no more than what hehad declared: To you I shal give the holy things promised to David which can be relied upon.34 And to shew that he raised him up from the dead, not to return now any more to corruption, he said thus: I will give you the holy things of David faithful.
This is also why it says in another text: You wil not al ow your Holy One to see corruption.35 And therefore, in another place also, he saith: Thou shalt not suffer thy holy one to see corruption.
Now when David in his own time had served God's purposes he died; he was buried with hisancestors and has certainly seen corruption.36 For David, when he had served in his generation, according to the will of God, slept: and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption.
The one whom God has raised up, however, has not seen corruption.37 But he whom God hath raised from the dead, saw no corruption.
'My brothers, I want you to realise that it is through him that forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed toyou. Through him justification from al sins from which the Law of Moses was unable to justify38 Be it known therefore to you, men, brethren, that through him forgiveness of sins is preached to you: and from all the things, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
is being offered to every believer.39 In him every one that believeth, is justified.
'So be careful -- or what the prophets say wil happen to you.40 Beware, therefore, lest that come upon you which is spoken in the prophets:
Cast your eyes around you, mockers; be amazed, and perish! For I am doing something in your owndays that you would never believe if you were told of it.'41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which you will not believe, if any man shall tell it you.
As they left they were urged to continue this preaching the fol owing Sabbath.42 And as they went out, they desired them, that on the next sabbath, they would speak unto them these words.
When the meeting broke up many Jews and devout converts fol owed Paul and Barnabas, and in theirtalks with them Paul and Barnabas urged them to remain faithful to the grace God had given them.43 And when the synagogue was broken up, many of the Jews, and of the strangers who served God, followed Paul and Barnabas: who speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
The next Sabbath almost the whole town assembled to hear the word of God.44 But the next sabbath day, the whole city almost came together, to hear the word of God.
When they saw the crowds, the Jews, fil ed with jealousy, used blasphemies to contradict everythingPaul said.45 And the Jews seeing the multitudes, were filled with envy, and contradicted those things which were said by Paul, blaspheming.
Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out fearlessly. 'We had to proclaim the word of God to you first, butsince you have rejected it, since you do not think yourselves worthy of eternal life, here and now we turn to thegentiles.46 Then Paul and Barnabas said boldly: To you it behoved us first to speak the word of God: but because you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold we turn to the Gentiles.
For this is what the Lord commanded us to do when he said: I have made you a light to the nations,so that my salvation may reach the remotest parts of the earth.'47 For so the Lord hath commanded us: I have set thee to be the light of the Gentiles; that thou mayest be for salvation unto the utmost part of the earth.
It made the gentiles very happy to hear this and they gave thanks to the Lord for his message; all whowere destined for eternal life became believers.48 And the Gentiles hearing it, were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to life everlasting, believed.
Thus the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout the whole country.
But the Jews worked on some of the devout women of the upper classes and the leading men of thecity; they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expel ed them from their territory.50 But the Jews stirred up religious and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas: and cast them out of their coasts.
So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went off to Iconium; but theconverts were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.51 But they, shaking off the dust of their feet against them, came to Iconium.
And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Ghost.
