John 9

NEW JERUSALEM	VULGATA
1 As he went along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.	1 Et præteriens Jesus vidit hominem cæcum a nativitate :
2 His disciples asked him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should have been bornblind?'	2 et interrogaverunt eum discipuli ejus : Rabbi, quis peccavit, hic, aut parentes ejus, ut cæcus nasceretur ?
3 'Neither he nor his parents sinned,' Jesus answered, 'he was born blind so that the works of God mightbe revealed in him.	3 Respondit Jesus : Neque hic peccavit, neque parentes ejus : sed ut manifestentur opera Dei in illo.
4 'As long as day lasts we must carry out the work of the one who sent me; the night wil soon be herewhen no one can work.	4 Me oportet operari opera ejus qui misit me, donec dies est : venit nox, quando nemo potest operari :
5 As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world.'	5 quamdiu sum in mundo, lux sum mundi.
6 Having said this, he spat on the ground, made a paste with the spittle, put this over the eyes of the blindman,	6 Hæc cum dixisset, exspuit in terram, et fecit lutum ex sputo, et linivit lutum super oculos ejus,
7 and said to him, 'Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam' (the name means 'one who has been sent'). So hewent off and washed and came back able to see.	7 et dixit ei : Vade, lava in natatoria Siloë (quod interpretatur Missus). Abiit ergo, et lavit, et venit videns.
8 His neighbours and the people who used to see him before (for he was a beggar) said, 'Isn't this theman who used to sit and beg?'	8 Itaque vicini, et qui viderant eum prius quia mendicus erat, dicebant : Nonne hic est qui sedebat, et mendicabat ? Alii dicebant : Quia hic est.
9 Some said, 'Yes, it is the same one.' Others said, 'No, but he looks just like him.' The man himself said,'Yes, I am the one.'	9 Alii autem : Nequaquam, sed similis est ei. Ille vero dicebat : Quia ego sum.
10 So they said to him, 'Then how is it that your eyes were opened?'	10 Dicebant ergo ei : Quomodo aperti sunt tibi oculi ?
11 He answered, 'The man cal ed Jesus made a paste, daubed my eyes with it and said to me, "Go offand wash at Siloam"; so I went, and when I washed I gained my sight.'	11 Respondit : Ille homo qui dicitur Jesus, lutum fecit : et unxit oculos meos, et dixit mihi : Vade ad natatoria Siloë, et lava. Et abii, et lavi, et video.
12 They asked, 'Where is he?' He answered, 'I don't know.'	12 Et dixerunt ei : Ubi est ille ? Ait : Nescio.
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.	13 Adducunt eum ad pharisæos, qui cæcus fuerat.
14 It had been a Sabbath day when Jesus made the paste and opened the man's eyes,	14 Erat autem sabbatum quando lutum fecit Jesus, et aperuit oculos ejus.
15 so when the Pharisees asked him how he had gained his sight, he said, 'He put a paste on my eyes,and I washed, and I can see.'	15 Iterum ergo interrogabant eum pharisæi quomodo vidisset. Ille autem dixit eis : Lutum mihi posuit super oculos, et lavi, et video.
16 Then some of the Pharisees said, 'That man cannot be from God: he does not keep the Sabbath.'Others said, 'How can a sinner produce signs like this?' And there was division among them.	16 Dicebant ergo ex pharisæis quidam : Non est hic homo a Deo, qui sabbatum non custodit. Alii autem dicebant : Quomodo potest homo peccator hæc signa facere ? Et schisma erat inter eos.
17 So they spoke to the blind man again, 'What have you to say about him yourself, now that he hasopened your eyes?' The man answered, 'He is a prophet.'	17 Dicunt ergo cæco iterum : Tu quid dicis de illo qui aperuit oculos tuos ? Ille autem dixit : Quia propheta est.
18 However, the Jews would not believe that the man had been blind without first sending for the parentsof the man who had gained his sight and	18 Non crediderunt ergo Judæi de illo, quia cæcus fuisset et vidisset, donec vocaverunt parentes ejus, qui viderat :
19 asking them, 'Is this man really the son of yours who you say was born blind? If so, how is it that he isnow able to see?'	19 et interrogaverunt eos, dicentes : Hic est filius vester, quem vos dicitis quia cæcus natus est ? quomodo ergo nunc videt ?
20 His parents answered, 'We know he is our son and we know he was born blind,	20 Responderunt eis parentes ejus, et dixerunt : Scimus quia hic est filius noster, et quia cæcus natus est :
21 but how he can see, we don't know, nor who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is old enough: let himspeak for himself.'	21 quomodo autem nunc videat, nescimus : aut quis ejus aperuit oculos, nos nescimus ; ipsum interrogate : ætatem habet, ipse de se loquatur.
22 His parents spoke like this out of fear of the Jews, who had already agreed to ban from the synagogueanyone who should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ.	22 Hæc dixerunt parentes ejus, quoniam timebant Judæos : jam enim conspiraverunt Judæi, ut si quis eum confiteretur esse Christum, extra synagogam fieret.
23 This was why his parents said, 'He is old enough; ask him.'	23 Propterea parentes ejus dixerunt : Quia ætatem habet, ipsum interrogate.
24 So the Jews sent for the man again and said to him, 'Give glory to God! We are satisfied that this manis a sinner.'	24 Vocaverunt ergo rursum hominem qui fuerat cæcus, et dixerunt ei : Da gloriam Deo : nos scimus quia hic homo peccator est.
25 The man answered, 'Whether he is a sinner I don't know; al I know is that I was blind and now I cansee.'	25 Dixit ergo eis ille : Si peccator est, nescio ; unum scio, quia cæcus cum essem, modo video.
26 They said to him, 'What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?'	26 Dixerunt ergo illi : Quid fecit tibi ? quomodo aperuit tibi oculos ?
27 He replied, 'I have told you once and you wouldn't listen. Why do you want to hear it all again? Do youwant to become his disciples yourselves?'	27 Respondit eis : Dixi vobis jam, et audistis : quod iterum vultis audire ? numquid et vos vultis discipuli ejus fieri ?
28 At this they hurled abuse at him, 'It is you who are his disciple, we are disciples of Moses:	28 Maledixerunt ergo ei, et dixerunt : Tu discipulus illius sis : nos autem Moysi discipuli sumus.
29 we know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this man, we don't know where he comes from.'	29 Nos scimus quia Moysi locutus est Deus ; hunc autem nescimus unde sit.
30 The man replied, 'That is just what is so amazing! You don't know where he comes from and he hasopened my eyes!	30 Respondit ille homo, et dixit eis : In hoc enim mirabile est quia vos nescitis unde sit, et aperuit meos oculos :
31 We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but God does listen to people who are devout and do hiswil .	31 scimus autem quia peccatores Deus non audit : sed si quis Dei cultor est, et voluntatem ejus facit, hunc exaudit.
32 Ever since the world began it is unheard of for anyone to open the eyes of someone born blind;	32 A sæculo non est auditum quia quis aperuit oculos cæci nati.
33 if this man were not from God, he wouldn't have been able to do anything.'	33 Nisi esset hic a Deo, non poterat facere quidquam.
34 They retorted, 'Are you trying to teach us, and you a sinner through and through ever since you wereborn!' And they ejected him.	34 Responderunt, et dixerunt ei : In peccatis natus es totus, et tu doces nos ? Et ejecerunt eum foras.
35 Jesus heard they had ejected him, and when he found him he said to him, 'Do you believe in the Sonof man?'	35 Audivit Jesus quia ejecerunt eum foras : et cum invenisset eum, dixit ei : Tu credis in Filium Dei ?
36 'Sir,' the man replied, 'tel me who he is so that I may believe in him.'	36 Respondit ille, et dixit : Quis est, Domine, ut credam in eum ?
37 Jesus said, 'You have seen him; he is speaking to you.'	37 Et dixit ei Jesus : Et vidisti eum, et qui loquitur tecum, ipse est.
38 The man said, 'Lord, I believe,' and worshipped him.	38 At ille ait : Credo, Domine. Et procidens adoravit eum.
39 Jesus said: It is for judgement that I have come into this world, so that those without sight may see andthose with sight may become blind.	39 Et dixit Jesus : In judicium ego in hunc mundum veni : ut qui non vident videant, et qui vident cæci fiant.
40 Hearing this, some Pharisees who were present said to him, 'So we are blind, are we?'	40 Et audierunt quidam ex pharisæis qui cum ipso erant, et dixerunt ei : Numquid et nos cæci sumus ?
41 Jesus replied: If you were blind, you would not be guilty, but since you say, 'We can see,' your guiltremains.	41 Dixit eis Jesus : Si cæci essetis, non haberetis peccatum. Nunc vero dicitis, Quia videmus : peccatum vestrum manet.
