1 As he went along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.	1 E in passando vide Gesù un uomo cieco dalla sua nascita:
2 His disciples asked him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should have been bornblind?'	2 E i suoi discepoli gli dimandarono: Maestro, di chi è stata la colpa, di costui, o de' suoi genitori, ch'ei sia nato cieco?
3 'Neither he nor his parents sinned,' Jesus answered, 'he was born blind so that the works of God mightbe revealed in him.	3 Rispose Gesù: Né egli, nè i suoi genitori han peccato; ma perché in lui si manifestino le opere di Dio.
4 'As long as day lasts we must carry out the work of the one who sent me; the night wil soon be herewhen no one can work.	4 Conviene, che io faccia le opere di lui, che mi ha mandato, fintantoché è giorno: viene la notte, quando nissuno può operare.
5 As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world.'	5 Sino a tanto che io sono nel mondo, sono luce del mondo.
6 Having said this, he spat on the ground, made a paste with the spittle, put this over the eyes of the blindman,	6 Ciò detto sputò in terra, e fece con lo sputo del fango, e ne fece un impiastro sopra gli occhi di colui,
7 and said to him, 'Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam' (the name means 'one who has been sent'). So hewent off and washed and came back able to see.	7 E disselli: Va', lavati nella piscina di Siloe (parola, che significa il Messo). Andò pertanto, e si lavò, e tornò, che vedeva.
8 His neighbours and the people who used to see him before (for he was a beggar) said, 'Isn't this theman who used to sit and beg?'	8 Quindi è, che i vicini, e quelli, che l'avevan prima veduto mendicare, dicevano: Non è questi colui, che si stava a sedere chiedendo limosina? Altri dicevano: È desso.
9 Some said, 'Yes, it is the same one.' Others said, 'No, but he looks just like him.' The man himself said,'Yes, I am the one.'	9 Altri: No, ma è uno, che lo somiglia. Ma egli diceva: Io son quel desso.
10 So they said to him, 'Then how is it that your eyes were opened?'	10 Ed essi dicevangli: Come mai ti si sono aperti gli occhi?
11 He answered, 'The man cal ed Jesus made a paste, daubed my eyes with it and said to me, "Go offand wash at Siloam"; so I went, and when I washed I gained my sight.'	11 Rispose egli: Quell'uomo, che si chiama Gesù, fece del fango, e unse i miei occhi, e mi disse: Va' alla piscina di Siloae, e lavati. Sono andato, mi son lavato, e veggio.
12 They asked, 'Where is he?' He answered, 'I don't know.'	12 Allora gli dissero: Dev' è colui! Rispose: Nol so.
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.	13 Menano il già cieco da' Farisei.
14 It had been a Sabbath day when Jesus made the paste and opened the man's eyes,	14 Ed era giorno di sabato, quando Gesù fece quel fango, e aprì a lui gli occhi.
15 so when the Pharisees asked him how he had gained his sight, he said, 'He put a paste on my eyes,and I washed, and I can see.'	15 Di nuovo adunque l'interrogavano anche i Farisei, in qual modo avesse ottenuto il vedere. Ed ei disse loro: Mise del fango sopra i miei occhi, e mi lavai, e veggio.
16 Then some of the Pharisees said, 'That man cannot be from God: he does not keep the Sabbath.'Others said, 'How can a sinner produce signs like this?' And there was division among them.	16 Dicevan perciò alcuni de' Farisei: Non è da Dio quest'uomo, che non osserva il sabato. Altri dicevano: Come può un uom peccatore far tali prodigj? Ed erano tra loro in scissura.
17 So they spoke to the blind man again, 'What have you to say about him yourself, now that he hasopened your eyes?' The man answered, 'He is a prophet.'	17 Disser perciò di nuovo al cieco: Tu, che dici di colui, che ti ha aperti gli occhi? Egli rispose: Che è un profeta.
18 However, the Jews would not believe that the man had been blind without first sending for the parentsof the man who had gained his sight and	18 Non credettero però i Giudei, che egli fosse stato cieco, e avesse riavuto il vedere, sino a tanto che ebber chiamati i genitori dell'illuminato.
19 asking them, 'Is this man really the son of yours who you say was born blind? If so, how is it that he isnow able to see?'	19 E gli interrogaron, dicendo: E' questo quel vostro figliuolo, il quale dite, che nacque cieco? Come dunque ora ci vede?
20 His parents answered, 'We know he is our son and we know he was born blind,	20 Risposer loro i genitori di lui, e dissero: Sappiamo, che questi è nostro figliuolo, e che cieco nacque:
21 but how he can see, we don't know, nor who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is old enough: let himspeak for himself.'	21 Come poi ora ci vegga, noi sappiamo: e chi gli abbia aperti gli occhi noi noi sappiamo: domandatene a lui: Ha i suoi anni: parli egli da se di quel, che gli tocca.
22 His parents spoke like this out of fear of the Jews, who had already agreed to ban from the synagogueanyone who should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ.	22 Così parlarono i genitori di lui, perché avean paura de' Giudei: imperocché avean già decretato i Giudei, che se alcuno riconoscesse Gesù per il Cristo, fosse cacciato dalla Sinagoga.
23 This was why his parents said, 'He is old enough; ask him.'	23 Per questo dissero i genitori di lui: Ha i suoi anni, domandatene a lui.
24 So the Jews sent for the man again and said to him, 'Give glory to God! We are satisfied that this manis a sinner.'	24 Chiamarono adunque di bel nuovo colui, che era stato cieco, e gli dissero: Da' gloria a Dio: noi sappiamo, che quest' uomo è un uomo peccatore.
25 The man answered, 'Whether he is a sinner I don't know; al I know is that I was blind and now I cansee.'	25 Disse egli loro: Se ei sia peccatore, nol so: questo solo io so, che era cieco, e ora veggio.
26 They said to him, 'What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?'	26 Gli disser perciò: Che ti fece egli? Come aprì a te gli occhi?
27 He replied, 'I have told you once and you wouldn't listen. Why do you want to hear it all again? Do youwant to become his disciples yourselves?'	27 Rispose loro: Ve l'ho già detto, e l'avete udito: perché volete sentirlo di nuovo? Volete forse diventar anche voi suoi discepoli?
28 At this they hurled abuse at him, 'It is you who are his disciple, we are disciples of Moses:	28 Ma essi lo strapazzarono, e dissero: Sii tu suo discepolo: quanto a noi siami discepoli di Mosè.
29 we know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this man, we don't know where he comes from.'	29 Noi sappiamo, che a Mosè parlò Dio: ma costui non sappiamo, donde si sia.
30 The man replied, 'That is just what is so amazing! You don't know where he comes from and he hasopened my eyes!	30 Rispose colui, e disse loro: E qui appunto sta la meraviglia, che voi non sapete, donde ei si sia, ed ha aperti i miei occhi.
31 We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but God does listen to people who are devout and do hiswil .	31 Or sappiamo, che Dio non ode i peccatori: ma chi onora Dio, e fa la sua volontà, questi è esaudito da Dio.
32 Ever since the world began it is unheard of for anyone to open the eyes of someone born blind;	32 Dacché mondo è mondo, non si è udito dire, che alcuno abbia aperti gli irriti a un cieco nato.
33 if this man were not from God, he wouldn't have been able to do anything.'	33 Se questi non fosse da Dio, non potrebbe far nulla,
34 They retorted, 'Are you trying to teach us, and you a sinner through and through ever since you wereborn!' And they ejected him.	34 Gli risposero, e dissero: Tu se' venuto al mondo ricoperto di peccati, e tu ci fai il maestro? E lo cacciaron fuora.
35 Jesus heard they had ejected him, and when he found him he said to him, 'Do you believe in the Sonof man?'	35 Sentì dire Gesù, che lo avevan cacciato fuora: e avendolo incontrato, gli disse: Credi tu nel Figliuolo di Dio?
36 'Sir,' the man replied, 'tel me who he is so that I may believe in him.'	36 Rispose quegli, e disse: Chi è egli Signore, affinchè io in lui creda?
37 Jesus said, 'You have seen him; he is speaking to you.'	37 Disselli Gesù: E lo hai veduto, è colui, che teco parla, è quel desso.
38 The man said, 'Lord, I believe,' and worshipped him.	38 Allora quegli disse: Signore, io credo. E prostratosi lo adorò.
39 Jesus said: It is for judgement that I have come into this world, so that those without sight may see andthose with sight may become blind.	39 E Gesù disse: Io son venuto in questo mondo per far giudizio: onde quei, che non vedono, veggano, e que', che veggono, diventino ciechi.
40 Hearing this, some Pharisees who were present said to him, 'So we are blind, are we?'	40 E lo udirono alcuni de' Farisei, che eran con lui, e gli dissero: Siamo forse ciechi anche noi?
41 Jesus replied: If you were blind, you would not be guilty, but since you say, 'We can see,' your guiltremains.	41 Disse loro Gesù: Se foste ciechi, non sareste in colpa; ma al contrario voi dite: Noi veggiamo. Sussiste adunque il vostro peccato.
