NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
As he went along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.1 Et praeteriens vidit hominem caecum a nativitate.
His disciples asked him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should have been bornblind?'2 Et interro gaverunteum discipuli sui dicentes: “ Rabbi, quis peccavit, hic aut parentes eius, utcaecus nasceretur? ”.
'Neither he nor his parents sinned,' Jesus answered, 'he was born blind so that the works of God mightbe revealed in him.3 Respondit Iesus: “ Neque hic peccavit neque parenteseius, sed ut manifestentur opera Dei in illo.
'As long as day lasts we must carry out the work of the one who sent me; the night wil soon be herewhen no one can work.4 Nos oportet operari opera eius, qui misit me, donec dies est; venit nox, quando nemo potest operari.
As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world.'5 Quamdiuin mundo sum, lux sum mundi ”.
Having said this, he spat on the ground, made a paste with the spittle, put this over the eyes of the blindman,6 Haec cum dixisset, exspuit in terram et fecitlutum ex sputo et linivit lutum super oculos eius
and said to him, 'Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam' (the name means 'one who has been sent'). So hewent off and washed and came back able to see.7 et dixit ei: “ Vade, lavain natatoria Siloae! ” — quod interpretatur Missus C. Abiit ergo et lavit etvenit videns.
His neighbours and the people who used to see him before (for he was a beggar) said, 'Isn't this theman who used to sit and beg?'8 Itaque vicini et, qui videbant eum prius quia mendicus erat,dicebant: “ Nonne hic est, qui sedebat et mendicabat? ”;
Some said, 'Yes, it is the same one.' Others said, 'No, but he looks just like him.' The man himself said,'Yes, I am the one.'9 alii dicebant:“ Hic est! ”; alii dicebant: “ Nequaquam, sed similis est eius! ”. Illedicebat: “ Ego sum! ”.
So they said to him, 'Then how is it that your eyes were opened?'10 Dicebant ergo ei: “ Quomodo igitur aperti suntoculi tibi? ”.
He answered, 'The man cal ed Jesus made a paste, daubed my eyes with it and said to me, "Go offand wash at Siloam"; so I went, and when I washed I gained my sight.'11 Respondit ille: “ Homo, qui dicitur Iesus, lutum fecit etunxit oculos meos et dixit mihi: “Vade ad Siloam et lava! “. Abii ergo etlavi et vidi ”.
They asked, 'Where is he?' He answered, 'I don't know.'12 Et dixerunt ei: “ Ubi est ille? ”. Ait: “ Nescio ”.
They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.13 Adducunt eum ad pharisaeos, qui caecus fuerat.
It had been a Sabbath day when Jesus made the paste and opened the man's eyes,14 Erat autem sabbatum, in quadie lutum fecit Iesus et aperuit oculos eius.
so when the Pharisees asked him how he had gained his sight, he said, 'He put a paste on my eyes, and I washed, and I can see.'15 Iterum ergo interrogabant eteum pharisaei quomodo vidisset. Ille autem dixit eis: “ Lutum posuit superoculos meos, et lavi et video ”.
Then some of the Pharisees said, 'That man cannot be from God: he does not keep the Sabbath.'Others said, 'How can a sinner produce signs like this?' And there was division among them.16 Dicebant ergo ex pharisaeis quidam: “Non est hic homo a Deo, quia sabbatum non custodit! ”; alii autem dicebant:“ Quomodo potest homo peccator haec signa facere? ”. Et schisma erat in eis.
So they spoke to the blind man again, 'What have you to say about him yourself, now that he hasopened your eyes?' The man answered, 'He is a prophet.'17 Dicunt ergo caeco iterum: “ Tu quid dicis de eo quia aperuit oculos tuos?”. Ille autem dixit: “ Propheta est! ”.
However, the Jews would not believe that the man had been blind without first sending for the parentsof the man who had gained his sight and18 Non crediderunt ergo Iudaei deillo quia caecus fuisset et vidisset, donec vocaverunt parentes eius, quividerat.
asking them, 'Is this man really the son of yours who you say was born blind? If so, how is it that he isnow able to see?'19 Et interrogaverunt eos dicentes: “ Hic est filius vester, quem vosdicitis quia caecus natus est? Quomodo ergo nunc videt? ”.
His parents answered, 'We know he is our son and we know he was born blind,20 Responderuntergo parentes eius et dixerunt: “ Scimus quia hic est filius noster et quiacaecus natus est.
but how he can see, we don't know, nor who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is old enough: let himspeak for himself.'21 Quomodo autem nunc videat nescimus, aut quis eius aperuitoculos nos nescimus; ipsum interrogate. Aetatem habet; ipse de se loquetur! ”.
His parents spoke like this out of fear of the Jews, who had already agreed to ban from the synagogueanyone who should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ.22 Haec dixerunt parentes eius, quia timebant Iudaeos; iam enim conspiraverantIudaei, ut, si quis eum confiteretur Christum, extra synagogam fieret.
This was why his parents said, 'He is old enough; ask him.'23 Propterea parentes eius dixerunt: “ Aetatem habet; ipsum interrogate! ”.
So the Jews sent for the man again and said to him, 'Give glory to God! We are satisfied that this manis a sinner.'24 Vocaverunt ergo rursum hominem, qui fuerat caecus, et dixerunt ei: “ Dagloriam Deo! Nos scimus quia hic homo peccator est ”.
The man answered, 'Whether he is a sinner I don't know; al I know is that I was blind and now I cansee.'25 Respondit ergo ille:“ Si peccator est nescio; unum scio quia, caecus cum essem, modo video ”.
They said to him, 'What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?'26 Dixerunt ergo illi: “ Quid fecit tibi? Quomodo aperuit oculos tuos? ”.
He replied, 'I have told you once and you wouldn't listen. Why do you want to hear it all again? Do youwant to become his disciples yourselves?'27 Respondit eis: “ Dixi vobis iam, et non audistis; quid iterum vultis audire?Numquid et vos vultis discipuli eius fieri? ”.
At this they hurled abuse at him, 'It is you who are his disciple, we are disciples of Moses:28 Et maledixerunt ei etdixerunt: “ Tu discipulus illius es, nos autem Moysis discipuli sumus.
we know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this man, we don't know where he comes from.'29 Nosscimus quia Moysi locutus est Deus; hunc autem nescimus unde sit ”.
The man replied, 'That is just what is so amazing! You don't know where he comes from and he hasopened my eyes!30 Respondit homo et dixit eis: “ In hoc enim mirabile est, quia vos nescitisunde sit, et aperuit meos oculos!
We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but God does listen to people who are devout and do hiswil .31 Scimus quia peccatores Deus non audit; sed,si quis Dei cultor est et voluntatem eius facit, hunc exaudit.
Ever since the world began it is unheard of for anyone to open the eyes of someone born blind;32 A saeculo nonest auditum quia aperuit quis oculos caeci nati;
if this man were not from God, he wouldn't have been able to do anything.'33 nisi esset hic a Deo, nonpoterat facere quidquam ”.
They retorted, 'Are you trying to teach us, and you a sinner through and through ever since you wereborn!' And they ejected him.34 Responderunt et dixerunt ei: “ In peccatis tunatus es totus et tu doces nos? ”. Et eiecerunt eum foras.
Jesus heard they had ejected him, and when he found him he said to him, 'Do you believe in the Sonof man?'35 Audivit Iesus quia eiecerunt eum foras et, cum invenisset eum, dixit ei: “Tu credis in Filium hominis? ”.
'Sir,' the man replied, 'tel me who he is so that I may believe in him.'36 Respondit ille et dixit: “ Et quis est,Domine, ut credam in eum? ”.
Jesus said, 'You have seen him; he is speaking to you.'37 Dixit ei Iesus: “ Et vidisti eum; et, quiloquitur tecum, ipse est ”.
The man said, 'Lord, I believe,' and worshipped him.38 At ille ait: “ Credo, Domine! ”; etadoravit eum.
Jesus said: It is for judgement that I have come into this world, so that those without sight may see andthose with sight may become blind.39 Et dixit Iesus: “ In iudicium ego in hunc mundum veni, ut,qui non vident, videant, et, qui vident, caeci fiant ”.
Hearing this, some Pharisees who were present said to him, 'So we are blind, are we?'40 Audierunt haec expharisaeis, qui cum ipso erant, et dixerunt ei: “ Numquid et nos caeci sumus?”.
Jesus replied: If you were blind, you would not be guilty, but since you say, 'We can see,' your guiltremains.41 Dixit eis Iesus: “ Si caeci essetis, non haberetis peccatum. Nunc verodicitis: “Videmus!”; peccatum vestrum manet ”.
