John 8

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.	1 Ma Gesù andò al monte degli Ulivi.
2 At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as al the people came to him, he sat down andbegan to teach them.	2 E sul far del giorno tornò di nuovo nel tempio, e tutto il popolo accorse a lui ed egli sedutosi, l'ammaestrava.
3 The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; andmaking her stand there in the middle	3 Allora gli Scribi ed i Farisei gli condussero una donna colta in adulterio e, postala in mezzo,
4 they said to Jesus, 'Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery,	4 gli dissero: Maestro, questa donna è stata sorpresa in flagrante adulterio.
5 and in the Law Moses has ordered us to stone women of this kind. What have you got to say?'	5 Or Mosè nella legge ci ha comandato che queste tali siano lapidate; e tu che ne dici?
6 They asked him this as a test, looking for an accusation to use against him. But Jesus bent down andstarted writing on the ground with his finger.	6 E dicevan questo per metterlo alla prova e per poterlo accusare. Ma Gesù, chinatosi, si mise a scrivere col dito in terra.
7 As they persisted with their question, he straightened up and said, 'Let the one among you who isguiltless be the first to throw a stone at her.'	7 E siccome continuavano ad interrogarlo, si alzò e disse loro: Chi di voi è senza peccato, scagli contro di lei la prima pietra.
8 Then he bent down and continued writing on the ground.	8 E di nuovo chinatosi, seguitò a scrivere in terra.
9 When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the last one had goneand Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained in the middle.	9 Ma quelli udito ciò, uno dopo l'altro se ne andarono tutti, cominciando dai più vecchi, e Gesù restò solo con la donna là in mezzo.
10 Jesus again straightened up and said, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?'	10 Allora, Gesù, alzatosi, disse alla donna: Dove sono, o donna, quelli che ti accusavano? Nessuno ti ha condannata?
11 'No one, sir,' she replied. 'Neither do I condemn you,' said Jesus. 'Go away, and from this moment sinno more.'	11 Ed ella: Nessuno, Signore. E Gesù le disse: Nemmeno io ti condannerò: va' e non peccare più.
12 When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who fol ows me wilnot be walking in the dark, but wil have the light of life.	12 Di nuovo Gesù parlò ad essi, dicendo: Io sono la luce del mondo: chi mi segue non camminerà nelle tenebre, ma avrà la luce della vita.
13 At this the Pharisees said to him, 'You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not true.'	13 Gli dissero allora i Farisei: Tu rendi testimonianza di te stesso, la tua testimonianza non vale.
14 Jesus replied: Even though I am testifying on my own behalf, my testimony is stil true, because I knowwhere I have come from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.	14 Gesù replicò loro: Sebbene io renda testimonianza di me stesso, val sempre la mia testimonianza, perchè so donde son venuto e dove vado; ma voi non sapete donde io verga e dove io vada.
15 You judge by human standards; I judge no one,	15 Voi giudicate secondo la carne: io non giudico nessuno;
16 but if I judge, my judgement will be true, because I am not alone: the one who sent me is with me;	16 e se giudico io, il mio giudizio è vero, perchè non sono solo; ma con me è il Padre che mi ha inviato.
17 and in your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.	17 Ed anche nella vostra legge sta scritto che è valida la testimonianza di due persone.
18 I testify on my own behalf, but the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf, too.	18 Ora a rendere testimonianza di me stesso ci sono io ed il Padre che mi ha mandato.
19 They asked him, 'Where is your Father then?' Jesus answered: You do not know me, nor do you knowmy Father; if you did know me, you would know my Father as wel .	19 Gli dissero allora: Dov'è tuo Padre? Rispose Gesù: Non conoscete nè me nè il mio Padre; se conosceste me, conoscereste anche il mio Padre.
20 He spoke these words in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple. No one arrested him, becausehis hour had not yet come.	20 Tali parole disse Gesù nel gazofilacio, insegnando nel tempio, e nessuno lo prese, perchè non era ancora giunta l'ora sua.
21 Again he said to them: I am going away; you will look for me and you wil die in your sin. Where I amgoing, you cannot come.	21 Di nuovo Gesù disse loro: Io me ne vado, e mi cercherete, e morrete nel vostro peccato. Dove vado io, voi non potete venire.
22 So the Jews said to one another, 'Is he going to kil himself, that he says, "Where I am going, youcannot come?" '	22 Dicevan perciò i Giudei: Si ucciderà forse da se stesso, chè dice: Dove io vado non potete venire?
23 Jesus went on: You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.	23 Ed egli replicò loro: Voi siete di quaggiù; io sono di lassù. Voi siete di questo mondo; io non sono di questo mondo:
24 I have told you already: You wil die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you wil die inyour sins.	24 perciò vi ho detto che morrete nei vostri peccati; perchè se non credete che io sono, morrete nei vostri peccati.
25 So they said to him, 'Who are you?' Jesus answered: What I have told you from the outset.	25 Gli dissero allora: E chi sei tu? Gesù rispose loro: Il principio che parlo a voi.
26 About you I have much to say and much to judge; but the one who sent me is true, and what I declareto the world I have learnt from him.	26 Molto ho da dire e condannare riguardo a voi, ma colui che m'ha mandato è verace, quanto ho udito da lui quello dico al mondo.
27 They did not recognise that he was talking to them about the Father.	27 E non intesero che parlava di suo Padre, Dio.
28 So Jesus said: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you wil know that I am He and that I donothing of my own accord. What I say is what the Father has taught me;	28 Disse dunque loro Gesù: Quando avrete innalzato il Figlio dell'uomo, allora conoscerete chi sono io, e che niente faccio da me, e che dico quello che il Padre mi ha insegnato.
29 he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.	29 E chi mi ha mandato è con me e non mi ha lasciato solo, perchè io faccio sempre quello che è di suo piacimento.
30 As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.	30 A queste sue parole molti credettero in lui.
31 To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: If you make my word your home you wil indeed be mydisciples;	31 Ma Gesù disse ai Giudei che avevano in lui creduto: Se persevererete nei miei insegnamenti, sarete veramente miei discepoli
32 you wil come to know the truth, and the truth wil set you free.	32 e conoscerete la verità, e la verità vi farà liberi.
33 They answered, 'We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone;what do you mean, "You wil be set free?" '	33 Gli opposero: Siamo progenie di Abramo, nè giammai servimmo ad alcuno, come dunque dici tu: Sarete liberi?
34 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave.	34 Rispose loro Gesù: In verità, in verità vi dico: chi fa il peccato è servo del peccato.
35 Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever.	35 Or il servo non sta sempre in casa, il figlio invece vi sta sempre.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.	36 Se dunque il figlio vi libera, sarete veramente liberi.
37 I know that you are descended from Abraham; but you want to kil me because my word finds no placein you.	37 Lo so che siete figli di Àbramo; ma intanto cercate di uccidermi, perchè la mia parola non penetra in voi.
38 What I speak of is what I have seen at my Father's side, and you too put into action the lessons youhave learnt from your father.	38 Io dico quel che ho visto presso il Padre mio, e voi pure fate quello che avete imparato dal padre vostro.
39 They repeated, 'Our father is Abraham.' Jesus said to them: If you are Abraham's children, do asAbraham did.	39 Gli replicarono: Il padre nostro è Abramo. Rispose loro Gesù: Se siete figli di Abramo fate le opere di Abramo.
40 As it is, you want to kill me, a man who has told you the truth as I have learnt it from God; that is notwhat Abraham did.	40 Ma intanto cercate di uccider me, chè v'ho detto la verità da me udita da Dio: Abramo non fece così.
41 You are doing your father's work. They replied, 'We were not born illegitimate, the only father we haveis God.'	41 Voi fate le opere del padre vostro. Gli risposero: Non siamo mica dei bastardi; abbiamo Dio per unico padre.
42 Jesus answered: If God were your father, you would love me, since I have my origin in God and havecome from him; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.	42 Se Dio fosse vostro padre, disse allora Gesù, certamente mi amereste, perchè io procedo e vengo da Dio e non sono venuto da me stesso, ma egli mi ha mandato.
43 Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot bear to listen to my words.	43 Perchè non capite il mio linguaggio? Perchè non potete soffrire i miei discorsi?
44 You are from your father, the devil, and you prefer to do what your father wants. He was a murdererfrom the start; he was never grounded in the truth; there is no truth in him at all. When he lies he is speaking trueto his nature, because he is a liar, and the father of lies.	44 Voi avete per padre il diavolo e volete soddisfare i desideri del padre vostro; esso fu omicida fin da principio, e non perseverò nella verità, perchè in lui non c'è verità; quando mentisce parla da suo pari, perchè è bugiardo e padre della menzogna.
45 But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.	45 A me perchè vi dico la verità non credete.
46 Can any of you convict me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?	46 Chi di voi mi potrà convincere di peccato? Se io vi dico la verità, perchè non mi credete?
47 Whoever comes from God listens to the words of God; the reason why you do not listen is that you arenot from God.	47 Chi è da Dio ascolta le parole di Dio. Per questo voi non le ascoltate, perchè non siete da Dio.
48 The Jews replied, 'Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and possessed by a devil?'Jesus answered:	48 Replicarono i Giudei: Non diciamo con ragione che tu sei un samaritano e indemoniato?
49 I am not possessed; but I honour my Father, and you deny me honour.	49 Gesù rispose: Io non sono indemoniato; ma onoro il Padre mio e voi mi vituperate.
50 I do not seek my own glory; there is someone who does seek it and is the judge of it.	50 Ma io non cerco la mia gloria, c'è chi ne prende cura e ne giudica.
51 In al truth I tel you, whoever keeps my word wil never see death.	51 In verità in verità vi dico: chi custodisce la mia parola non vedrà la morte in eterno.
52 The Jews said, 'Now we know that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead,and yet you say, "Whoever keeps my word wil never know the taste of death."	52 Gli dissero allora i Giudei: Or vediamo bene che tu sei posseduto da un demonio. Abramo è morto, e così i profeti e tu dici: Chi custodisce la mia parola non vedrà la morte in eterno?
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are youclaiming to be?'	53 Sei forse da più del padre nostro Abramo, che è morto? Ed anche i profeti sono morti. Chi credi mai di essere?
54 Jesus answered: If I were to seek my own glory my glory would be worth nothing; in fact, my glory isconferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, 'He is our God,'	54 Gesù rispose: Se io glorifico me stesso, la mia gloria è nulla: c'è a glorificarmi il Padre mio, il quale voi dite essere Dio vostro;
55 although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say, 'I do not know him,' I should be aliar, as you yourselves are. But I do know him, and I keep his word.	55 ma non lo avete conosciuto. Io sì che lo conosco, e se dicessi di non conoscerlo, sarei, come voi, bugiardo. Ma io lo conosco, ed osservo le sue parole.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.	56 Abramo, padre vostro, sospirò di vedere il mio giorno: lo vide e ne tripudiò.
57 The Jews then said, 'You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!'	57 Gli opposero i Giudei: Non hai ancora cinquant'anni e hai veduto Abramo?
58 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am.	58 Gesù rispose loro: In verità, in verità vi dico: prima che Abramo fosse nato, io sono.
59 At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.	59 Dettero allora di piglio alle pietre per tirargliele; ma Gesù si nascose ed uscì dal tempio.
