NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.	1 - Gesù poi se n'andò sul monte degli Ulivi;
2 At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as al the people came to him, he sat down andbegan to teach them.	2 e all'alba ritornò nel tempio e tutto il popolo accorse a lui, che seduto lo ammaestrava.
3 The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; andmaking her stand there in the middle	3 Ora gli Scribi e i Farisei gli condussero una donna, sorpresa in adulterio; e messala in mezzo,
4 they said to Jesus, 'Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery,	4 gli dissero: «Maestro, questa donna è stata or ora sorpresa in adulterio.
5 and in the Law Moses has ordered us to stone women of this kind. What have you got to say?'	5 Ora Mosè nella Legge ci ha comandato di lapidare tali persone; tu che dici?».
6 They asked him this as a test, looking for an accusation to use against him. But Jesus bent down andstarted writing on the ground with his finger.	6 Essi dicevano ciò per cimentarlo, onde poterlo accusare. Ma Gesù si chinò e col dito si pose a scrivere in terra.
7 As they persisted with their question, he straightened up and said, 'Let the one among you who isguiltless be the first to throw a stone at her.'	7 Siccome insistevano nell'interrogarlo, si levò su e disse loro: «Chi tra voi è senza peccato, getti per primo contro di lei la pietra»;
8 Then he bent down and continued writing on the ground.	8 poi si chinò di nuovo e scriveva in terra.
9 When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the last one had goneand Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained in the middle.	9 Ma coloro, udito ciò, se ne andarono, un dopo l'altro, cominciando dai più vecchi, in modo che Gesù rimase solo con la donna, ritta in mezzo.
10 Jesus again straightened up and said, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?'	10 Gesù, alzatosi, le domandò: «Donna, dove sono i tuoi accusatori? Nessuno ti ha condannato?».
11 'No one, sir,' she replied. 'Neither do I condemn you,' said Jesus. 'Go away, and from this moment sinno more.'	11 Ed ella disse: «Nessuno, Signore». «Ebbene», soggiunse Gesù «neppure io ti condanno; va' e non voler più peccare».
12 When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who fol ows me wilnot be walking in the dark, but wil have the light of life.	12 Gesù di nuovo parlò a quelli, dicendo: «Io sono la luce del mondo; chi mi segue non camminerà nelle tenebre, ma avrà la luce di vita».
13 At this the Pharisees said to him, 'You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not true.'	13 Allora i Farisei gli dissero: «Tu ti rendi testimonianza da te medesimo, ma la tua testimonianza non è veritiera».
14 Jesus replied: Even though I am testifying on my own behalf, my testimony is stil true, because I knowwhere I have come from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.	14 Gesù rispose loro: «Benchè io mi renda testimonianza da me, la mia testimonianza è veritiera, perchè so donde sono venuto e dove vado. Voi invece non sapete nè donde vengo nè dove vado.
15 You judge by human standards; I judge no one,	15 Voi giudicate secondo la carne, ma io non giudico nessuno.
16 but if I judge, my judgement will be true, because I am not alone: the one who sent me is with me;	16 E se io giudico, il mio giudizio è vero, perchè io non sono solo; ma sono io ed il Padre che mi ha mandato.
17 and in your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.	17 Anche nella vostra legge sta scritto che la "testimonianza di due uomini è degna di fede".
18 I testify on my own behalf, but the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf, too.	18 Ora io rendo testimonianza di me stesso e rende testimonianza di me anche il Padre che mi ha mandato».
19 They asked him, 'Where is your Father then?' Jesus answered: You do not know me, nor do you knowmy Father; if you did know me, you would know my Father as wel .	19 Gli domandarono: «Dov'è il Padre tuo?». Rispose Gesù: «Voi non conoscete nè me, nè il Padre; se conosceste me, conoscereste forse anche il Padre mio».
20 He spoke these words in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple. No one arrested him, becausehis hour had not yet come.	20 Queste parole disse Gesù nel gazofilacio, insegnando nel tempio; e nessuno lo prese perchè non era ancora venuta l'ora sua.
21 Again he said to them: I am going away; you will look for me and you wil die in your sin. Where I amgoing, you cannot come.	21 Gesù disse loro di nuovo: «Io me ne vado e voi mi cercherete, e morrete nel vostro peccato. Dove vado io, voi non potete venire».
22 So the Jews said to one another, 'Is he going to kil himself, that he says, "Where I am going, youcannot come?" '	22 I Giudei perciò cominciarono a dire: «Che voglia forse uccidersi, poichè dice: - Dove vado io, voi non potete venire? -».
23 Jesus went on: You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.	23 Ed egli soggiunse loro: «Voi siete di quaggiù, io sono di lassù; voi siete di questo mondo, io non sono di questo mondo.
24 I have told you already: You wil die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you wil die inyour sins.	24 Perciò vi ho detto che morirete nei vostri peccati, perchè se non credete che sono io, morirete nei vostri peccati».
25 So they said to him, 'Who are you?' Jesus answered: What I have told you from the outset.	25 Gli domandarono allora: «E tu chi sei?». Gesù rispose loro: «Il principio che vi parlo.
26 About you I have much to say and much to judge; but the one who sent me is true, and what I declareto the world I have learnt from him.	26 A vostro riguardo ho molte cose da dire e da giudicare, ma Colui che mi mandò è verace e ciò che io ho udito da lui, lo dico al mondo».
27 They did not recognise that he was talking to them about the Father.	27 Essi non capirono che egli chiamava suo Padre Dio.
28 So Jesus said: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you wil know that I am He and that I donothing of my own accord. What I say is what the Father has taught me;	28 Gesù dunque disse loro: «Quando avrete inalzato il Figliuol dell'uomo, allora conoscerete che sono io, e non faccio nulla da me, ma parlo sempre in conformità a quanto mi ha insegnato il Padre mio;
29 he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.	29 e chi mi ha mandato è con me e non mi ha lasciato solo, perchè faccio sempre quanto piace a lui».
30 As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.	30 Mentre parlava così, molti credettero in lui;
31 To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: If you make my word your home you wil indeed be mydisciples;	31 e Gesù prese a dire ai Giudei che avevano creduto in lui: «Se rimarrete nella mia parola, sarete veramente miei discepoli,
32 you wil come to know the truth, and the truth wil set you free.	32 conoscerete la verità e la verità vi farà liberi».
33 They answered, 'We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone;what do you mean, "You wil be set free?" '	33 Gli replicarono: «Noi siamo della stirpe di Abramo e non fummo mai schiavi di nessuno; come dunque dici: - Diverrete liberi? -».
34 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave.	34 Rispose Gesù: «In verità, in verità vi dico: Chi commette il peccato è schiavo del peccato.
35 Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever.	35 Ora lo schiavo non resta per sempre nella casa; il figlio invece vi resta per sempre.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.	36 Se dunque il Figliuolo vi avrà liberati, sarete veramente liberi.
37 I know that you are descended from Abraham; but you want to kil me because my word finds no placein you.	37 So che siete figli di Abramo; ma voi cercate di uccidermi, perchè la mia parola non penetra in voi.
38 What I speak of is what I have seen at my Father's side, and you too put into action the lessons youhave learnt from your father.	38 Io dico quello che ho veduto presso il Padre mio; e voi pure fate quello che avete veduto presso il padre vostro».
39 They repeated, 'Our father is Abraham.' Jesus said to them: If you are Abraham's children, do asAbraham did.	39 Gli replicarono: «Il nostro padre è Abramo». Soggiunse Gesù: «Se siete figli di Abramo, fate le opere di Abramo.
40 As it is, you want to kill me, a man who has told you the truth as I have learnt it from God; that is notwhat Abraham did.	40 Invece voi ora cercate di uccidere me, che vi ho detto la verità, che udii da Dio. Abramo non fece così.
41 You are doing your father's work. They replied, 'We were not born illegitimate, the only father we haveis God.'	41 Voi fate le opere del padre vostro». Gli risposero: «Non siamo nati da fornicazione! Abbiamo un solo Padre, Dio».
42 Jesus answered: If God were your father, you would love me, since I have my origin in God and havecome from him; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.	42 E Gesù a loro: «Se Dio fosse vostro Padre, amereste anche me, perchè io procedetti e venni da Dio; non sono infatti venuto da me, ma Egli mi ha inviato.
43 Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot bear to listen to my words.	43 Perchè non comprendete il mio linguaggio? Perchè non potete ascoltare la mia parola.
44 You are from your father, the devil, and you prefer to do what your father wants. He was a murdererfrom the start; he was never grounded in the truth; there is no truth in him at all. When he lies he is speaking trueto his nature, because he is a liar, and the father of lies.	44 Voi avete per padre il diavolo, e volete soddisfare i desiderii del padre vostro. Egli era omicida fin da principio, e non perseverò nella verità, perchè la verità non è in lui. Quando dice la menzogna, parla del suo, perchè è bugiardo e padre di quella.
45 But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.	45 Se io quindi dico la verità, voi non mi credete.
46 Can any of you convict me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?	46 Chi di voi mi convincerà di peccato? Se io dico la verità, perchè non mi volete credere?
47 Whoever comes from God listens to the words of God; the reason why you do not listen is that you arenot from God.	47 Chi è da Dio ascolta le parole di Dio, ecco perchè voi non le ascoltate: perchè non siete da Dio».
48 The Jews replied, 'Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and possessed by a devil?'Jesus answered:	48 I Giudei replicarono: «Non abbiamo noi ragione di dire che sei un Samaritano, e hai un demonio?».
49 I am not possessed; but I honour my Father, and you deny me honour.	49 Rispose Gesù: «Io non ho un demonio, ma onoro il Padre mio e voi mi vituperate.
50 I do not seek my own glory; there is someone who does seek it and is the judge of it.	50 Però io non cerco la mia gloria; v'è chi la cerca e giudica.
51 In al truth I tel you, whoever keeps my word wil never see death.	51 In verità, in verità vi dico che se alcuno custodirà la mia parola non vedrà la morte in eterno».
52 The Jews said, 'Now we know that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead,and yet you say, "Whoever keeps my word wil never know the taste of death."	52 Gli dissero i Giudei: «Ora conosciamo bene che hai un demonio. Abramo è morto, come pure i profeti, e tu dici: - Chi custodirà le mie parole non gusterà la morte in eterno. -
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are youclaiming to be?'	53 Sei tu da più del padre nostro Abramo, il quale è morto, come son morti anche i profeti? Chi pretendi di essere?».
54 Jesus answered: If I were to seek my own glory my glory would be worth nothing; in fact, my glory isconferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, 'He is our God,'	54 Gesù rispose: «Se io glorifico me stesso, la mia gloria è vana; ma è il Padre mio che mi glorifica, quegli che voi chiamate vostro Dio;
55 although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say, 'I do not know him,' I should be aliar, as you yourselves are. But I do know him, and I keep his word.	55 ma voi non lo conoscete, mentre io lo conosco, e se dicessi che non lo conosco, sarei bugiardo come voi, mentre lo conosco e ne osservo la parola.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.	56 Abramo, vostro padre, esultò per vedere il mio giorno: lo vide e si rallegrò».
57 The Jews then said, 'You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!'	57 I Giudei allora gli dissero: «Non hai ancora cinquant'anni e hai veduto Abramo?».
58 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am.	58 Gesù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico: Prima che Abramo nascesse, io sono».
59 At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.	59 Allora presero delle pietre per scagliargliele contro; ma Gesù si nascose ed uscì dal tempio.
