NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.1 Iesus autem perrexit in montem Oliveti.
At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as al the people came to him, he sat down andbegan to teach them.2 Diluculo autem iterum venit intemplum, et omnis populus veniebat ad eum, et sedens docebat eos.
The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; andmaking her stand there in the middle3 Adducuntautem scribae et pharisaei mulierem in adulterio deprehensam et statuerunt eamin medio
they said to Jesus, 'Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery,4 et dicunt ei: “ Magister, haec mulier manifesto deprehensa est inadulterio.
and in the Law Moses has ordered us to stone women of this kind. What have you got to say?'5 In lege autem Moyses mandavit nobis huiusmodi lapidare; tu ergoquid dicis? ”.
They asked him this as a test, looking for an accusation to use against him. But Jesus bent down andstarted writing on the ground with his finger.6 Hoc autem dicebant tentantes eum, ut possent accusare eum.Iesus autem inclinans se deorsum digito scribebat in terra.
As they persisted with their question, he straightened up and said, 'Let the one among you who isguiltless be the first to throw a stone at her.'7 Cum autemperseverarent interrogantes eum, erexit se et dixit eis: “ Qui sine peccatoest vestrum, primus in illam lapidem mittat ”;
Then he bent down and continued writing on the ground.8 et iterum se inclinansscribebat in terra.
When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the last one had goneand Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained in the middle.9 Audientes autem unus post unum exibant, incipientes asenioribus, et remansit solus, et mulier in medio stans.
Jesus again straightened up and said, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?'10 Erigens autem seIesus dixit ei: “ Mulier, ubi sunt? Nemo te condemnavit? ”.
'No one, sir,' she replied. 'Neither do I condemn you,' said Jesus. 'Go away, and from this moment sinno more.'11 Quae dixit:“ Nemo, Domine ”. Dixit autem Iesus: “ Nec ego te condemno; vade etamplius iam noli peccare ”.
When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who fol ows me wilnot be walking in the dark, but wil have the light of life.12 Iterum ergo locutus est eis Iesus dicens: “ Ego sum lux mundi; qui sequiturme, non ambulabit in tenebris, sed habebit lucem vitae ”.
At this the Pharisees said to him, 'You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not true.'13 Dixerunt ergo eipharisaei: “ Tu de teipso testimonium perhibes; testimonium tuum non est verum”.
Jesus replied: Even though I am testifying on my own behalf, my testimony is stil true, because I knowwhere I have come from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.14 Respondit Iesus et dixit eis: “ Et si ego testimonium perhibeo demeipso, verum est testimonium meum, quia scio unde veni et quo vado; vos autemnescitis unde venio aut quo vado.
You judge by human standards; I judge no one,15 Vos secundum carnem iudicatis, ego noniudico quemquam.
but if I judge, my judgement will be true, because I am not alone: the one who sent me is with me;16 Et si iudico ego, iudicium meum verum est, quia solus nonsum, sed ego et, qui me misit, Pater.
and in your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.17 Sed et in lege vestra scriptum est, quia duorum hominum testimonium verum est.
I testify on my own behalf, but the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf, too.18 Ego sum, qui testimonium perhibeode meipso, et testimonium perhibet de me, qui misit me, Pater ”.
They asked him, 'Where is your Father then?' Jesus answered: You do not know me, nor do you knowmy Father; if you did know me, you would know my Father as wel .19 Dicebantergo ei: “ Ubi est Pater tuus? ”. Respondit Iesus: “ Neque me scitis nequePatrem meum; si me sciretis, forsitan et Patrem meum sciretis ”.
He spoke these words in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple. No one arrested him, becausehis hour had not yet come.20 Haec verbalocutus est in gazophylacio docens in templo; et nemo apprehendit eum, quianecdum venerat hora eius.
Again he said to them: I am going away; you will look for me and you wil die in your sin. Where I amgoing, you cannot come.21 Dixit ergo iterum eis: “ Ego vado, et quaeretis me et in peccato vestromoriemini! Quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire ”.
So the Jews said to one another, 'Is he going to kil himself, that he says, "Where I am going, youcannot come?" '22 Dicebant ergo Iudaei:“ Numquid interficiet semetipsum, quia dicit: “Quo ego vado, vos nonpotestis venire”? ”.
Jesus went on: You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.23 Et dicebat eis: “ Vos de deorsum estis, ego desupernis sum; vos de mundo hoc estis, ego non sum de hoc mundo.
I have told you already: You wil die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you wil die inyour sins.24 Dixi ergovobis quia moriemini in peccatis vestris; si enim non credideritis quia ego sum, moriemini in peccatis vestris ”.
So they said to him, 'Who are you?' Jesus answered: What I have told you from the outset.25 Dicebant ergo ei: “ Tu quis es? ”.Dixit eis Iesus: “ In principio: id quod et loquor vobis!
About you I have much to say and much to judge; but the one who sent me is true, and what I declareto the world I have learnt from him.26 Multa habeo devobis loqui et iudicare; sed, qui misit me, verax est, et ego, quae audivi abeo, haec loquor ad mundum ”.
They did not recognise that he was talking to them about the Father.27 Non cognoverunt quia Patrem eis dicebat.
So Jesus said: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you wil know that I am He and that I donothing of my own accord. What I say is what the Father has taught me;28 Dixit ergo eis Iesus: “ Cum exaltaveritis Filium hominis, tunc cognoscetisquia ego sum et a meipso facio nihil, sed, sicut docuit me Pater, haec loquor.
he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.29 Et qui me misit, mecum est; non reliquit me solum, quia ego, quae placitasunt ei, facio semper ”.
As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.30 Haec illo loquente, multi crediderunt in eum.
To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: If you make my word your home you wil indeed be mydisciples;31 Dicebat ergo Iesus ad eos, qui crediderunt ei, Iudaeos: “ Si vos manseritisin sermone meo, vere discipuli mei estis
you wil come to know the truth, and the truth wil set you free.32 et cognoscetis veritatem, et veritasliberabit vos ”.
They answered, 'We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone;what do you mean, "You wil be set free?" '33 Responderunt ei: “ Semen Abrahae sumus et neminiservivimus umquam! Quomodo tu dicis: “Liberi fietis”? ”.
Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave.34 Respondit eisIesus: “ Amen, amen dico vobis: Omnis, qui facit peccatum, servus est peccati.
Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever.35 Servus autem non manet in domo in aeternum; filius manet in aeternum.
So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.36 Siergo Filius vos liberaverit, vere liberi eritis.
I know that you are descended from Abraham; but you want to kil me because my word finds no placein you.37 Scio quia semen Abrahaeestis; sed quaeritis me interficere, quia sermo meus non capit in vobis.
What I speak of is what I have seen at my Father's side, and you too put into action the lessons youhave learnt from your father.38 Ego,quae vidi apud Patrem, loquor; et vos ergo, quae audivistis a patre, facitis ”.
They repeated, 'Our father is Abraham.' Jesus said to them: If you are Abraham's children, do asAbraham did.39 Responderunt et dixerunt ei: “ Pater noster Abraham est ”. Dicit eisIesus: “ Si filii Abrahae essetis, opera Abrahae faceretis.
As it is, you want to kill me, a man who has told you the truth as I have learnt it from God; that is notwhat Abraham did.40 Nunc autemquaeritis me interficere, hominem, qui veritatem vobis locutus sum, quam audivia Deo; hoc Abraham non fecit.
You are doing your father's work. They replied, 'We were not born illegitimate, the only father we haveis God.'41 Vos facitis opera patris vestri ”. Dixeruntitaque ei: “ Nos ex fornicatione non sumus nati; unum patrem habemus Deum! ”.
Jesus answered: If God were your father, you would love me, since I have my origin in God and havecome from him; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.42 Dixit eis Iesus: “ Si Deus pater vester esset, diligeretis me; ego enim exDeo processi et veni; neque enim a meipso veni, sed ille me misit.
Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot bear to listen to my words.43 Quareloquelam meam non cognoscitis? Quia non potestis audire sermonem meum.
You are from your father, the devil, and you prefer to do what your father wants. He was a murdererfrom the start; he was never grounded in the truth; there is no truth in him at all. When he lies he is speaking trueto his nature, because he is a liar, and the father of lies.44 Vos expatre Diabolo estis et desideria patris vestri vultis facere. Ille homicida eratab initio et in veritate non stabat, quia non est veritas in eo. Cum loquiturmendacium, ex propriis loquitur, quia mendax est et pater eius.
But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.45 Ego autemquia veritatem dico, non creditis mihi.
Can any of you convict me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?46 Quis ex vobis arguit me de peccato?Si veritatem dico, quare vos non creditis mihi?
Whoever comes from God listens to the words of God; the reason why you do not listen is that you arenot from God.47 Qui est ex Deo, verba Deiaudit; propterea vos non auditis, quia ex Deo non estis ”.
The Jews replied, 'Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and possessed by a devil?'Jesus answered:48 Responderunt Iudaei et dixerunt ei: “ Nonne bene dicimus nos, quiaSamaritanus es tu et daemonium habes? ”.
I am not possessed; but I honour my Father, and you deny me honour.49 Respondit Iesus: “ Ego daemoniumnon habeo, sed honorifico Patrem meum, et vos inhonoratis me.
I do not seek my own glory; there is someone who does seek it and is the judge of it.50 Ego autem nonquaero gloriam meam; est qui quaerit et iudicat.
In al truth I tel you, whoever keeps my word wil never see death.51 Amen, amen dico vobis: Siquis sermonem meum servaverit, mortem non videbit in aeternum ”.
The Jews said, 'Now we know that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead, and yet you say, "Whoever keeps my word wil never know the taste of death."52 Dixeruntergo ei Iudaei: “ Nunc cognovimus quia daemonium habes. Abraham mortuus est etprophetae, et tu dicis: “Si quis sermonem meum servaverit, non gustabit mortemin aeternum”.
Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are youclaiming to be?'53 Numquid tu maior es patre nostro Abraham, qui mortuus est? Etprophetae mortui sunt! Quem teipsum facis? ”.
Jesus answered: If I were to seek my own glory my glory would be worth nothing; in fact, my glory isconferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, 'He is our God,'54 Respondit Iesus: “ Si egoglorifico meipsum, gloria mea nihil est; est Pater meus, qui glorificat me, quemvos dicitis: “Deus noster est!”,
although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say, 'I do not know him,' I should be aliar, as you yourselves are. But I do know him, and I keep his word.55 et non cognovistis eum. Ego autem novieum. Et si dixero: Non scio eum, ero similis vobis, mendax; sed scio eum etsermonem eius servo.
Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.56 Abraham pater vester exsultavit, ut videret diem meum;et vidit et gavisus est ”.
The Jews then said, 'You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!'57 Dixerunt ergo Iudaei ad eum: “ Quinquagintaannos nondum habes et Abraham vidisti? ”.
Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am.58 Dixit eis Iesus: “ Amen, amendico vobis: Antequam Abraham fieret, ego sum ”.
At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.59 Tulerunt ergo lapides, utiacerent in eum; Iesus autem abscondit se et exivit de templo.
