NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.	1 Gesù invece andò sul monte degli Ulivi.
2 At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as al the people came to him, he sat down andbegan to teach them.	2 Di buon mattino si presentò di nuovo al tempio e tutto il popolo accorreva a lui e, sedutosi, li istruiva.
3 The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; andmaking her stand there in the middle	3 Ora gli scribi e i farisei conducono una donna sorpresa in adulterio e, postala in mezzo,
4 they said to Jesus, 'Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery,	4 gli dicono: "Maestro, questa donna è stata sorpresa in flagrante adulterio.
5 and in the Law Moses has ordered us to stone women of this kind. What have you got to say?'	5 Ora, nella legge Mosè ci ha comandato di lapidare tali donne. Tu, che ne dici?".
6 They asked him this as a test, looking for an accusation to use against him. But Jesus bent down andstarted writing on the ground with his finger.	6 Questo lo dicevano per tendergli un tranello, per avere di che accusarlo. Gesù, però, chinatosi, tracciava dei segni per terra con il dito.
7 As they persisted with their question, he straightened up and said, 'Let the one among you who isguiltless be the first to throw a stone at her.'	7 Siccome insistevano nell'interrogarlo, si drizzò e disse loro: "Quello di voi che è senza peccato scagli per primo una pietra contro di lei".
8 Then he bent down and continued writing on the ground.	8 E chinatosi di nuovo scriveva per terra.
9 When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the last one had goneand Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained in the middle.	9 Quelli, udito ciò, presero a ritirarsi uno dopo l'altro, a cominciare dai più anziani, e fu lasciato solo con la donna che stava nel mezzo.
10 Jesus again straightened up and said, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?'	10 Rizzatosi allora, Gesù le disse: "Donna, dove sono? Nessuno ti ha condannata?".
11 'No one, sir,' she replied. 'Neither do I condemn you,' said Jesus. 'Go away, and from this moment sinno more.'	11 Rispose: "Nessuno, Signore". "Neppure io ti condanno -- disse Gesù. -- Va', e d'ora in poi non peccare più".
12 When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who fol ows me wilnot be walking in the dark, but wil have the light of life.	12 Gesù parlò di nuovo, dicendo: "Io sono la luce del mondo. Chi mi segue non cammina nelle tenebre, ma avrà la luce della vita".
13 At this the Pharisees said to him, 'You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not true.'	13 Gli dissero allora i farisei: "Tu rendi testimonianza a te stesso; la tua testimonianza non è valida".
14 Jesus replied: Even though I am testifying on my own behalf, my testimony is stil true, because I knowwhere I have come from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.	14 Rispose loro Gesù: "Anche se io rendo testimonianza a me stesso, la mia testimonianza è valida, perché so donde sono venuto e dove vado; voi invece non sapete donde vengo o dove vado.
15 You judge by human standards; I judge no one,	15 Voi giudicate secondo la carne, io non giudico nessuno.
16 but if I judge, my judgement will be true, because I am not alone: the one who sent me is with me;	16 Ma anche se io giudico, il mio giudizio è valido, perché non sono solo, ma io e il Padre che mi ha mandato.
17 and in your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.	17 E nella vostra legge è scritto che la testimonianza di due persone è valida.
18 I testify on my own behalf, but the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf, too.	18 Sono io che rendo testimonianza a me stesso e mi rende testimonianza anche il Padre che mi ha mandato".
19 They asked him, 'Where is your Father then?' Jesus answered: You do not know me, nor do you knowmy Father; if you did know me, you would know my Father as wel .	19 Gli dissero allora: "Dov'è il Padre tuo?". Rispose Gesù: "Non conoscete né me né il Padre mio; se mi conosceste, conoscereste anche il Padre mio".
20 He spoke these words in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple. No one arrested him, becausehis hour had not yet come.	20 Pronunciò queste parole nel luogo del tesoro, insegnando nel tempio. E nessuno lo arrestò, perché non era ancora giunta la sua ora.
21 Again he said to them: I am going away; you will look for me and you wil die in your sin. Where I amgoing, you cannot come.	21 Disse loro di nuovo: "Io vado e voi mi cercherete, ma morirete nel vostro peccato. Dove io vado, voi non potete venire".
22 So the Jews said to one another, 'Is he going to kil himself, that he says, "Where I am going, youcannot come?" '	22 Dissero allora i Giudei: "Vuol forse suicidarsi che dice: "Dove io vado voi non potete venire"?".
23 Jesus went on: You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.	23 Diceva loro: "Voi siete dal basso, io sono dall'alto. Voi siete di questo mondo, io non sono di questo mondo.
24 I have told you already: You wil die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you wil die inyour sins.	24 Per questo vi ho detto: "Morirete nei vostri peccati". Se infatti non crederete che io sono, morirete nei vostri peccati".
25 So they said to him, 'Who are you?' Jesus answered: What I have told you from the outset.	25 Gli dicevano allora: "Chi sei tu?". Gesù rispose loro: "Anzitutto, ciò che vi continuo a dire.
26 About you I have much to say and much to judge; but the one who sent me is true, and what I declareto the world I have learnt from him.	26 Molte cose ho da dire di voi e da giudicare. Ma Colui che mi ha mandato è verace e io dico al mondo quelle cose che ho udito da lui".
27 They did not recognise that he was talking to them about the Father.	27 Non compresero che parlava loro del Padre.
28 So Jesus said: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you wil know that I am He and that I donothing of my own accord. What I say is what the Father has taught me;	28 Disse dunque Gesù: "Quando innalzerete il Figlio dell'uomo, allora conoscerete che io sono e che non faccio nulla da me stesso, ma come mi ha insegnato il Padre, queste cose dico.
29 he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.	29 Colui che mi ha mandato è con me; non mi ha lasciato solo, perché faccio sempre ciò che gli piace".
30 As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.	30 A queste sue parole, molti credettero in lui.
31 To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: If you make my word your home you wil indeed be mydisciples;	31 Diceva dunque Gesù ai Giudei che avevano creduto a lui: "Se rimanete nella mia parola, siete veramente miei discepoli
32 you wil come to know the truth, and the truth wil set you free.	32 e conoscerete la verità e la verità vi farà liberi".
33 They answered, 'We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone;what do you mean, "You wil be set free?" '	33 Gli risposero: "Noi siamo stirpe di Abramo e non siamo mai stati schiavi di nessuno. Come mai tu dici: "Diventerete liberi"?".
34 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave.	34 Rispose loro Gesù: "In verità, in verità vi dico: chi fa il peccato è schiavo del peccato.
35 Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever.	35 Lo schiavo non rimane in casa per sempre; il figlio rimane per sempre.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.	36 Se il Figlio vi libererà, sarete veramente liberi.
37 I know that you are descended from Abraham; but you want to kil me because my word finds no placein you.	37 So che siete stirpe di Abramo, ma cercate di uccidermi perché la mia parola non trova posto in voi.
38 What I speak of is what I have seen at my Father's side, and you too put into action the lessons youhave learnt from your father.	38 Io vi dico quello che ho visto presso il Padre: fate dunque anche voi quello che avete udito dal padre".
39 They repeated, 'Our father is Abraham.' Jesus said to them: If you are Abraham's children, do asAbraham did.	39 Gli risposero: "Il nostro padre è Abramo". Dice loro Gesù: "Se foste figli di Abramo, fareste le opere di Abramo.
40 As it is, you want to kill me, a man who has told you the truth as I have learnt it from God; that is notwhat Abraham did.	40 Ora invece cercate di uccidere me, uno che vi ha detto la verità che ha udito da Dio. Questo Abramo non lo fece.
41 You are doing your father's work. They replied, 'We were not born illegitimate, the only father we haveis God.'	41 Voi fate le opere del padre vostro". Gli dissero: "Noi non siamo nati da prostituzione. Non abbiamo che un padre: Dio".
42 Jesus answered: If God were your father, you would love me, since I have my origin in God and havecome from him; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.	42 Disse loro Gesù: "Se il vostro padre fosse Dio, mi amereste, perché io sono uscito e vengo da Dio. Non sono venuto infatti da me stesso, ma lui mi ha mandato.
43 Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot bear to listen to my words.	43 Perché non comprendete il mio linguaggio? Perché non siete capaci di ascoltare la mia parola.
44 You are from your father, the devil, and you prefer to do what your father wants. He was a murdererfrom the start; he was never grounded in the truth; there is no truth in him at all. When he lies he is speaking trueto his nature, because he is a liar, and the father of lies.	44 Il diavolo è il padre da cui voi siete e volete compiere i desideri del vostro padre. Quello è stato omicida fin dal principio, e non si mantenne nella verità, perché la verità non è in lui. Quando dice la menzogna, dice proprio ciò che è suo, perché è menzognero e padre della menzogna.
45 But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.	45 A me, invece, perché dico la verità, non credete.
46 Can any of you convict me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?	46 Chi di voi può dimostrare che io abbia peccato? Se dico la verità, perché non mi credete?
47 Whoever comes from God listens to the words of God; the reason why you do not listen is that you arenot from God.	47 Chi è da Dio ascolta le parole di Dio. Per questo voi non ascoltate, perché non siete da Dio".
48 The Jews replied, 'Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and possessed by a devil?'Jesus answered:	48 Gli risposero i Giudei: "Non diciamo noi giustamente che sei un samaritano e che hai un demonio?".
49 I am not possessed; but I honour my Father, and you deny me honour.	49 Rispose Gesù: "Io non ho un demonio, ma onoro il Padre mio e voi mi disonorate.
50 I do not seek my own glory; there is someone who does seek it and is the judge of it.	50 Io non cerco la mia gloria. C'è chi la cerca e giudica.
51 In al truth I tel you, whoever keeps my word wil never see death.	51 In verità, in verità vi dico: se uno osserva la mia parola, non vedrà la morte in eterno".
52 The Jews said, 'Now we know that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead,and yet you say, "Whoever keeps my word wil never know the taste of death."	52 Gli dissero i Giudei: "Adesso siamo sicuri che tu hai un demonio. Abramo è morto, anche i profeti sono morti e tu dici: "Se uno osserva la mia parola, non gusterà la morte in eterno".
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are youclaiming to be?'	53 Sei tu forse più grande del nostro padre Abramo, che è morto? Anche i profeti sono morti. Chi pretendi di essere?".
54 Jesus answered: If I were to seek my own glory my glory would be worth nothing; in fact, my glory isconferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, 'He is our God,'	54 Rispose Gesù: "Se io glorificassi me stesso, la mia gloria sarebbe nulla. E' il Padre mio che mi glorifica, quello di cui voi dite: "E' il nostro Dio".
55 although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say, 'I do not know him,' I should be aliar, as you yourselves are. But I do know him, and I keep his word.	55 Eppure non l'avete conosciuto, mentre io lo conosco. Se io dicessi: "Non lo conosco", sarei un bugiardo come voi. Ma io lo conosco e osservo la sua parola.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.	56 Abramo vostro padre esultò al vedere il mio giorno, e lo vide e si rallegrò".
57 The Jews then said, 'You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!'	57 Gli dissero allora i Giudei: "Non hai ancora cinquant'anni e hai visto Abramo?".
58 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am.	58 Disse loro Gesù: "In verità, in verità vi dico: prima che Abramo fosse, io sono".
59 At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.	59 Presero allora delle pietre per scagliargliele addosso. Gesù però si nascose ed uscì dal tempio.
