John 8

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.	1 Mas Jesús se fue al monte de los Olivos.
2 At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as al the people came to him, he sat down andbegan to teach them.	2 Pero de madrugada se presentó otra vez en el Templo, y todo el pueblo acudía a él. Entonces se sentó y se puso a enseñarles.
3 The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; andmaking her stand there in the middle	3 Los escribas y fariseos le llevan una mujer sorprendida en adulterio, la ponen en medio
4 they said to Jesus, 'Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery,	4 y le dicen: «Maestro, esta mujer ha sido sorprendida en flagrante adulterio.
5 and in the Law Moses has ordered us to stone women of this kind. What have you got to say?'	5 Moisés nos mandó en la Ley apedrear a estas mujeres. ¿Tú qué dices?»
6 They asked him this as a test, looking for an accusation to use against him. But Jesus bent down andstarted writing on the ground with his finger.	6 Esto lo decían para tentarle, para tener de qué acuasarle. Pero Jesús, inclinándose, se puso a escribir con el dedo en la tierra.
7 As they persisted with their question, he straightened up and said, 'Let the one among you who isguiltless be the first to throw a stone at her.'	7 Pero, como ellos insistían en preguntarle, se incorporó y les dijo: «Aquel de vosotros que esté sin pecado, que le arroje la primera piedra».
8 Then he bent down and continued writing on the ground.	8 E inclinándose de nuevo, escribía en la tierra.
9 When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the last one had goneand Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained in the middle.	9 Ellos, al oír estas palabras, se iban retirando uno tras otro, comenzando por los más viejos; y se quedó solo Jesús con la mujer, que seguía en medio.
10 Jesus again straightened up and said, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?'	10 Incorporándose Jesús le dijo: «Mujer, ¿dónde están? ¿Nadie te ha condenado?»
11 'No one, sir,' she replied. 'Neither do I condemn you,' said Jesus. 'Go away, and from this moment sinno more.'	11 Ella respondió: «Nadie, Señor». Jesús le dijo: «Tampoco yo te condeno. Vete, y en adelante no peques más».
12 When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who fol ows me wilnot be walking in the dark, but wil have the light of life.	12 Jesús les habló otra vez diciendo: «Yo soy la luz del mundo; el que me siga no caminará en la oscuridad, sino que tendrá la luz de la vida».
13 At this the Pharisees said to him, 'You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not true.'	13 Los fariseos le dijeron: «Tú das testimonio de ti mismo: tu testimonio no vale».
14 Jesus replied: Even though I am testifying on my own behalf, my testimony is stil true, because I knowwhere I have come from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.	14 Jesús les respondió: «Aunque yo dé testimonio de mí mismo, mi testimonio vale, porque sé de dónde he venido y a dónde voy; pero vosotros no sabéis de dónde vengo ni a dónde voy.
15 You judge by human standards; I judge no one,	15 Vosotros juzgáis según la carne; yo no juzgo a nadie;
16 but if I judge, my judgement will be true, because I am not alone: the one who sent me is with me;	16 y si juzgo, mi juicio es verdadero, porque no estoy yo solo, sino yo y el que me ha enviado.
17 and in your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.	17 Y en vuestra Ley está escrito que el testimonio de dos personas es válido.
18 I testify on my own behalf, but the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf, too.	18 Yo soy el que doy testimonio de mí mismo y también el que me ha enviado, el Padre, da testimonio de mí».
19 They asked him, 'Where is your Father then?' Jesus answered: You do not know me, nor do you knowmy Father; if you did know me, you would know my Father as wel .	19 Entonces le decían: «¿Dónde está tu Padre?» Respondió Jesús: «No me conocéis ni a mí ni a mi Padre; si me conocierais a mí, conoceríais también a mi Padre».
20 He spoke these words in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple. No one arrested him, becausehis hour had not yet come.	20 Estas palabras las pronunció en el Tesoro, mientras enseñaba en el Templo. Y nadie le prendió, porque aún no había llegado su hora.
21 Again he said to them: I am going away; you will look for me and you wil die in your sin. Where I amgoing, you cannot come.	21 Jesús les dijo otra vez: «Yo me voy y vosotros me buscaréis, y moriréis en vuestro pecado. Adonde yo voy, vosotros no podéis ir».
22 So the Jews said to one another, 'Is he going to kil himself, that he says, "Where I am going, youcannot come?" '	22 Los judíos se decían: «¿Es que se va a suicidar, pues dice: “Adonde yo voy, vosotros no podéis ir?»
23 Jesus went on: You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.	23 El les decía: «Vosotros sois de abajo, yo soy de arriba. Vosotros sois de este mundo, yo no soy de este mundo.
24 I have told you already: You wil die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you wil die inyour sins.	24 Ya os he dicho que moriréis en vuestros pecados, porque si no creéis que Yo Soy, moriréis en vuestros pecados».
25 So they said to him, 'Who are you?' Jesus answered: What I have told you from the outset.	25 Entonces le decían: «¿Quién eres tú?» Jesús les respondió: «Desde el principio, lo que os estoy diciendo.
26 About you I have much to say and much to judge; but the one who sent me is true, and what I declareto the world I have learnt from him.	26 Mucho podría hablar de vosotros y juzgar pero el que me ha enviado es veraz, y lo que le he oído a él es lo que hablo al mundo».
27 They did not recognise that he was talking to them about the Father.	27 No comprendieron que les hablaba del Padre.
28 So Jesus said: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you wil know that I am He and that I donothing of my own accord. What I say is what the Father has taught me;	28 Les dijo, pues, Jesús: «Cuando hayáis levantado al Hijo del hombre, entonces sabréis que Yo Soy, y que no hago nada por mi propia cuenta; sino que, lo que el Padre me ha enseñado, eso es lo que hablo.
29 he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.	29 Y el que me ha enviado está conmigo: no me ha dejado solo, porque yo hago siempre lo que le agrada a él».
30 As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.	30 Al hablar así, muchos creyeron en él.
31 To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: If you make my word your home you wil indeed be mydisciples;	31 Decía, pues, Jesús a los judíos que habían creído en él: «Si os mantenéis en mi Palabra, seréis verdaderamente mis discípulos,
32 you wil come to know the truth, and the truth wil set you free.	32 y conoceréis la verdad y la verdad os hará libres».
33 They answered, 'We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone;what do you mean, "You wil be set free?" '	33 Ellos le respondieron: «Nosotros somos descendencia de Abraham y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo dices tú: Os haréis libres?»
34 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave.	34 Jesús les respondió: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: todo el que comete pecado es un esclavo.
35 Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever.	35 Y el esclavo no se queda en casa para siempre; mientras el hijo se queda para siempre.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.	36 Si, pues, el Hijo os da la libertad, seréis realmente libres.
37 I know that you are descended from Abraham; but you want to kil me because my word finds no placein you.	37 Ya sé que sois descendencia de Abraham; pero tratáis de matarme, porque mi Palabra no prende en vosotros.
38 What I speak of is what I have seen at my Father's side, and you too put into action the lessons youhave learnt from your father.	38 Yo hablo lo que he visto donde mi Padre; y vosotros hacéis lo que habéis oído donde vuestro padre».
39 They repeated, 'Our father is Abraham.' Jesus said to them: If you are Abraham's children, do asAbraham did.	39 Ellos le respondieron: «Nuestro padre es Abraham». Jesús les dice: «Si sois hijos de Abraham, haced las obras de Abraham.
40 As it is, you want to kill me, a man who has told you the truth as I have learnt it from God; that is notwhat Abraham did.	40 Pero tratáis de matarme, a mí que os he dicho la verdad que oí de Dios. Eso no lo hizo Abraham.
41 You are doing your father's work. They replied, 'We were not born illegitimate, the only father we haveis God.'	41 Vosotros hacéis las obras de vuestro padre». Ellos le dijeron: «Nosotros no hemos nacido de la prostitución; no tenemos más padre que a Dios».
42 Jesus answered: If God were your father, you would love me, since I have my origin in God and havecome from him; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.	42 Jesús les respondió: «Si Dios fuera vuestro Padre, me amaríais a mí, porque yo he salido y vengo de Dios; no he venido por mi cuenta, sino que él me ha enviado.
43 Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot bear to listen to my words.	43 ¿Por qué no reconocéis mi lenguaje? Porque no podéis escuchar mi Palabra.
44 You are from your father, the devil, and you prefer to do what your father wants. He was a murdererfrom the start; he was never grounded in the truth; there is no truth in him at all. When he lies he is speaking trueto his nature, because he is a liar, and the father of lies.	44 Vosotros sois de vuestro padre el diablo y queréis cumplir los deseos de vuestro padre. Este era homicida desde el principio, y no se mantuvo en la verdad, porque no hay verdad en él; cuando dice la mentira, dice lo que le sale de dentro, porque es mentiroso y padre de la mentira.
45 But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.	45 Pero a mí, como os digo la verdad, no me creéis.
46 Can any of you convict me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?	46 ¿Quién de vosotros puede probar que soy pecador? Si digo la verdad, ¿por qué no me creéis?
47 Whoever comes from God listens to the words of God; the reason why you do not listen is that you arenot from God.	47 El que es de Dios, escucha las palabras de Dios; vosotros no las escucháis, porque no sois de Dios».
48 The Jews replied, 'Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and possessed by a devil?'Jesus answered:	48 Los judíos le respondieron: «¿No decimos, con razón, que eres samaritano y que tienes un demonio?»
49 I am not possessed; but I honour my Father, and you deny me honour.	49 Respondió Jesús: «Yo no tengo un demonio; sino que honro a mi Padre, y vosotros me deshonráis a mí.
50 I do not seek my own glory; there is someone who does seek it and is the judge of it.	50 Pero yo no busco mi gloria; ya hay quien la busca y juzga.
51 In al truth I tel you, whoever keeps my word wil never see death.	51 En verdad, en verdad os digo: si alguno guarda mi Palabra, no verá la muerte jamás».
52 The Jews said, 'Now we know that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead,and yet you say, "Whoever keeps my word wil never know the taste of death."	52 Le dijeron los judíos: «Ahora estamos seguros de que tienes un demonio. Abraham murió, y también los profetas; y tú dices: “Si alguno guarda mi Palabra, no probará la muerte jamás.”
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are youclaiming to be?'	53 ¿Eres tú acaso más grande que nuestro padre Abraham, que murió? También los profetas murieron. ¿Por quién te tienes a ti mismo?»
54 Jesus answered: If I were to seek my own glory my glory would be worth nothing; in fact, my glory isconferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, 'He is our God,'	54 Jesús respondió: «Si yo me glorificara a mí mismo, mi gloria no valdría nada; es mi Padre quien me glorifica, de quien vosotros decís: “El es nuestro Dios”,
55 although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say, 'I do not know him,' I should be aliar, as you yourselves are. But I do know him, and I keep his word.	55 y sin embargo no le conocéis, yo sí que le conozco, y si dijera que no le conozco, sería un mentiroso como vosotros. Pero yo le conozco, y guardo su Palabra.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.	56 Vuestro padre Abraham se regocijó pensando en ver mi Día; lo vio y se alegró».
57 The Jews then said, 'You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!'	57 Entonces los judíos le dijeron: «¿Aún no tienes cincuenta años y has visto a Abraham?»
58 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am.	58 Jesús les respondió: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: antes de que Abraham existiera, Yo Soy».
59 At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.	59 Entonces tomaron piedras para tirárselas; pero Jesús se ocultó y salió del Templo.
