John 8

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.	1 Jesús fue al monte de los Olivos.
2 At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as al the people came to him, he sat down andbegan to teach them.	2 Al amanecer volvió al Templo, y todo el pueblo acudía a el. Entonces se sentó y comenzó a enseñarles.
3 The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; andmaking her stand there in the middle	3 Los escribas y los fariseos le trajeron a una mujer que había sido sorprendida en adulterio y, poniéndola en medio de todos,
4 they said to Jesus, 'Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery,	4 dijeron a Jesús: «Maestro, esta mujer ha sido sorprendida en flagrante adulterio.
5 and in the Law Moses has ordered us to stone women of this kind. What have you got to say?'	5 Moisés, en la Ley, nos ordenó apedrear a esta clase de mujeres. Y tú, ¿qué dices?».
6 They asked him this as a test, looking for an accusation to use against him. But Jesus bent down andstarted writing on the ground with his finger.	6 Decían esto para ponerlo a prueba, a fin de poder acusarlo. Pero Jesús, inclinándose, comenzó a escribir en el suelo con el dedo.
7 As they persisted with their question, he straightened up and said, 'Let the one among you who isguiltless be the first to throw a stone at her.'	7 Como insistían, se enderezó y les dijo: «El que no tenga pecado, que arroje la primera piedra».
8 Then he bent down and continued writing on the ground.	8 E inclinándose nuevamente, siguió escribiendo en el suelo.
9 When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the last one had goneand Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained in the middle.	9 Al oír estas palabras, todos se retiraron, uno tras otro, comenzando por los más ancianos. Jesús quedó solo con la mujer, que permanecía allí,
10 Jesus again straightened up and said, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?'	10 e incorporándose, le preguntó: «Mujer, ¿dónde están tus acusadores? ¿Alguien te ha condenado?».
11 'No one, sir,' she replied. 'Neither do I condemn you,' said Jesus. 'Go away, and from this moment sinno more.'	11 Ella le respondió: «Nadie, Señor». «Yo tampoco te condeno, le dijo Jesús. Vete, no peques más en adelante».
12 When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who fol ows me wilnot be walking in the dark, but wil have the light of life.	12 Jesús les dirigió una vez más la palabra, diciendo: «Yo soy la luz del mundo. El que me sigue no andará en tinieblas, sino que tendrá la luz de la Vida».
13 At this the Pharisees said to him, 'You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not true.'	13 Los fariseos le dijeron: «Tú das testimonio de ti mismo: tu testimonio no vale».
14 Jesus replied: Even though I am testifying on my own behalf, my testimony is stil true, because I knowwhere I have come from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.	14 Jesús les respondió: «Aunque yo doy testimonio de mí, mi testimonio vale porque sé de dónde vine y a dónde voy; pero ustedes no saben de dónde vengo ni a dónde voy.
15 You judge by human standards; I judge no one,	15 Ustedes juzgan según la carne; yo no juzgo a nadie,
16 but if I judge, my judgement will be true, because I am not alone: the one who sent me is with me;	16 y si lo hago, mi juicio vale porque no soy yo solo el que juzga, sino yo y el Padre que me envió.
17 and in your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.	17 En la Ley de ustedes está escrito que el testimonio de dos personas es válido.
18 I testify on my own behalf, but the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf, too.	18 Yo doy testimonio de mí mismo, y también el Padre que me envió da testimonio de mí».
19 They asked him, 'Where is your Father then?' Jesus answered: You do not know me, nor do you knowmy Father; if you did know me, you would know my Father as wel .	19 Ellos le preguntaron: «¿Dónde está tu Padre?». Jesús respondió: «Ustedes no me conocen ni a mí ni a mi Padre; si me conocieran a mí, conocerían también a mi Padre».
20 He spoke these words in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple. No one arrested him, becausehis hour had not yet come.	20 El pronunció estas palabras en la sala del Tesoro, cuando enseñaba en el Templo. Y nadie lo detuvo, porque aún no había llegado su hora.
21 Again he said to them: I am going away; you will look for me and you wil die in your sin. Where I amgoing, you cannot come.	21 Jesús les dijo también: «Yo me voy, y ustedes me buscarán y morirán en su pecado. Adonde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir».
22 So the Jews said to one another, 'Is he going to kil himself, that he says, "Where I am going, youcannot come?" '	22 Los judíos se preguntaban: «¿Pensará matarse para decir: «Adonde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir»?
23 Jesus went on: You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.	23 Jesús continuó: «Ustedes son de aquí abajo, yo soy de lo alto. Ustedes son de este mundo, yo no soy de este mundo.
24 I have told you already: You wil die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you wil die inyour sins.	24 Por eso les he dicho: "Ustedes morirán en sus pecados". Porque si no creen que Yo Soy, morirán en sus pecados».
25 So they said to him, 'Who are you?' Jesus answered: What I have told you from the outset.	25 Los judíos le preguntaron: «¿Quién eres tú?». Jesús les respondió: «Esto es precisamente lo que les estoy diciendo desde el comienzo.
26 About you I have much to say and much to judge; but the one who sent me is true, and what I declareto the world I have learnt from him.	26 De ustedes, tengo mucho que decir, mucho que juzgar. Pero aquel que me envió es veraz, y lo que aprendí de él es lo que digo al mundo».
27 They did not recognise that he was talking to them about the Father.	27 Ellos no comprendieron que Jesús se refería al Padre.
28 So Jesus said: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you wil know that I am He and that I donothing of my own accord. What I say is what the Father has taught me;	28 Después les dijo: «Cuando ustedes hayan levantado en alto al Hijo del hombre, entonces sabrán que Yo Soy y que no hago nada por mí mismo, sino que digo lo que el Padre me enseñó.
29 he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.	29 El que me envió está conmigo y no me ha dejado solo, porque yo hago siempre lo que le agrada».
30 As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.	30 Mientras hablaba así, muchos creyeron en él.
31 To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: If you make my word your home you wil indeed be mydisciples;	31 Jesús dijo a aquellos judíos que habían creído en él: «Si ustedes permanecen fieles a mi palabra, serán verdaderamente mis discípulos:
32 you wil come to know the truth, and the truth wil set you free.	32 conocerán la verdad y la verdad los hará libres».
33 They answered, 'We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone;what do you mean, "You wil be set free?" '	33 Ellos le respondieron: «Somos descendientes de Abraham y jamás hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo puedes decir entonces: "Ustedes serán libres"»?.
34 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave.	34 Jesús les respondió: «Les aseguro que todo el que peca es esclavo del pecado.
35 Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever.	35 El esclavo no permanece para siempre en la casa; el hijo, en cambio, permanece para siempre.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.	36 Por eso, si el Hijo los libera, ustedes serán realmente libres.
37 I know that you are descended from Abraham; but you want to kil me because my word finds no placein you.	37 Yo sé que ustedes son descendientes de Abraham, pero tratan de matarme porque mi palabra no penetra en ustedes.
38 What I speak of is what I have seen at my Father's side, and you too put into action the lessons youhave learnt from your father.	38 Yo digo lo que he visto junto a mi Padre, y ustedes hacen lo que han aprendido de su padre».
39 They repeated, 'Our father is Abraham.' Jesus said to them: If you are Abraham's children, do asAbraham did.	39 Ellos le replicaron: «Nuestro padre es Abraham». Y Jesús les dijo: «Si ustedes fueran hijos de Abraham obrarían como él.
40 As it is, you want to kill me, a man who has told you the truth as I have learnt it from God; that is notwhat Abraham did.	40 Pero ahora quieren matarme a mí, al hombre que les dice la verdad que ha oído de Dios. Abraham no hizo eso.
41 You are doing your father's work. They replied, 'We were not born illegitimate, the only father we haveis God.'	41 Pero ustedes obran como su padre». Ellos le dijeron: «Nosotros no hemos nacido de la prostitución; tenemos un solo Padre, que es Dios». Jesús prosiguió:
42 Jesus answered: If God were your father, you would love me, since I have my origin in God and havecome from him; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.	42 «Si Dios fuera su Padre, ustedes me amarían, porque yo he salido de Dios y vengo de él. No he venido por mí mismo, sino que él me envió.
43 Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot bear to listen to my words.	43 ¿Por qué ustedes no comprenden mi lenguaje? Es porque no pueden escuchar mi palabra.
44 You are from your father, the devil, and you prefer to do what your father wants. He was a murdererfrom the start; he was never grounded in the truth; there is no truth in him at all. When he lies he is speaking trueto his nature, because he is a liar, and the father of lies.	44 Ustedes tienen por padre al demonio y quieren cumplir los deseos de su padre. Desde el comienzo él fue homicida y no tiene nada que ver con la verdad, porque no hay verdad en él. Cuando miente, habla conforme a lo que es, porque es mentiroso y padre de la mentira.
45 But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.	45 Pero a mí no me creen, porque les digo la verdad.
46 Can any of you convict me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?	46 ¿Quién de ustedes probará que tengo pecado? Y si les digo la verdad. ¿por qué no me creen?
47 Whoever comes from God listens to the words of God; the reason why you do not listen is that you arenot from God.	47 El que es de Dios escucha las palabras de Dios; si ustedes no las escuchan, es porque no son de Dios».
48 The Jews replied, 'Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and possessed by a devil?'Jesus answered:	48 Los judíos le replicaron: «¿No tenemos razón al decir que eres un samaritano y que estás endemoniado?». Jesús respondió:
49 I am not possessed; but I honour my Father, and you deny me honour.	49 «Yo no estoy endemoniado, sino que honro a mi Padre, y ustedes me deshonran a mí.
50 I do not seek my own glory; there is someone who does seek it and is the judge of it.	50 Yo no busco mi gloria; hay alguien que la busca, y es él el que juzga.
51 In al truth I tel you, whoever keeps my word wil never see death.	51 Les aseguro que el que es fiel a mi palabra, no morirá jamás».
52 The Jews said, 'Now we know that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead,and yet you say, "Whoever keeps my word wil never know the taste of death."	52 Los judíos le dijeron: «Ahora sí estamos seguros de que estás endemoniado. Abraham murió, los profetas también, y tú dices: «El que es fiel a mi palabra, no morirá jamás».
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are youclaiming to be?'	53 ¿Acaso eres más grande que nuestro padre Abraham, el cual murió? Los profetas también murieron. ¿Quién pretendes ser tú?»
54 Jesus answered: If I were to seek my own glory my glory would be worth nothing; in fact, my glory isconferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, 'He is our God,'	54 Jesús respondió: «Si yo me glorificara a mí mismo, mi gloria no valdría nada. Es mi Padre el que me glorifica, el mismo al que ustedes llaman «nuestro Dios»,
55 although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say, 'I do not know him,' I should be aliar, as you yourselves are. But I do know him, and I keep his word.	55 y al que, sin embargo, no conocen. Yo lo conozco y si dijera: «No lo conozco», sería, como ustedes, un mentiroso. Pero yo lo conozco y soy fiel a su palabra.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.	56 Abraham, el padre de ustedes, se estremeció de gozo, esperando ver mi Día: lo vio y se llenó de alegría».
57 The Jews then said, 'You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!'	57 Los judíos le dijeron: «Todavía no tienes cincuenta años ¿y has visto a Abraham».
58 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am.	58 Jesús respondió: «Les aseguro que desde antes que naciera Abraham, Yo Soy».
59 At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.	59 Entonces tomaron piedras para apedrearlo, pero Jesús se escondió y salió del Templo.
