Deuteronomy 6

NEW JERUSALEM	MODERN HEBREW BIBLE
1 'Such, then, are the commandments, the laws and the customs which Yahweh your God has instructedme to teach you, for you to observe in the country which you are on your way to possess.	1 וזאת המצוה החקים והמשפטים אשר צוה יהוה אלהיכם ללמד אתכם לעשות בארץ אשר אתם עברים שמה לרשתה
2 And hence, if, throughout your lives, you fear Yahweh your God and keep al his laws andcommandments, which I am laying down for you today, you wil live long, you and your child and your grandchild.	2 למען תירא את יהוה אלהיך לשמר את כל חקתיו ומצותיו אשר אנכי מצוך אתה ובנך ובן בנך כל ימי חייך ולמען יארכן ימיך
3 Listen then, Israel, keep and observe what wil make you prosperous and numerous, as Yahweh, Godof your ancestors, has promised you, in giving you a country flowing with milk and honey.	3 ושמעת ישראל ושמרת לעשות אשר ייטב לך ואשר תרבון מאד כאשר דבר יהוה אלהי אבתיך לך ארץ זבת חלב ודבש
4 'Listen, Israel: Yahweh our God is the one, the only Yahweh.	4 שמע ישראל יהוה אלהינו יהוה אחד
5 You must love Yahweh your God with al your heart, with al your soul, with al your strength.	5 ואהבת את יהוה אלהיך בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך ובכל מאדך
6 Let the words I enjoin on you today stay in your heart.	6 והיו הדברים האלה אשר אנכי מצוך היום על לבבך
7 You shal tel them to your children, and keep on tel ing them, when you are sitting at home, when youare out and about, when you are lying down and when you are standing up;	7 ושננתם לבניך ודברת בם בשבתך בביתך ובלכתך בדרך ובשכבך ובקומך
8 you must fasten them on your hand as a sign and on your forehead as a headband;	8 וקשרתם לאות על ידך והיו לטטפת בין עיניך
9 you must write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.	9 וכתבתם על מזוזת ביתך ובשעריך
10 'When Yahweh has brought you into the country which he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaacand Jacob that he would give you, with great and prosperous cities you have not built,	10 והיה כי יביאך יהוה אלהיך אל הארץ אשר נשבע לאבתיך לאברהם ליצחק וליעקב לתת לך ערים גדלת וטבת אשר לא בנית
11 with houses full of good things you have not provided, with wel s you have not dug, with vineyards andolive trees you have not planted, and then, when you have eaten as much as you want,	11 ובתים מלאים כל טוב אשר לא מלאת וברת חצובים אשר לא חצבת כרמים וזיתים אשר לא נטעת ואכלת ושבעת
12 be careful you do not forget Yahweh who has brought you out of Egypt, out of the place of slave-labour.	12 השמר לך פן תשכח את יהוה אשר הוציאך מארץ מצרים מבית עבדים
13 Yahweh your God is the one you must fear, him alone you must serve, his is the name by which youmust swear.	13 את יהוה אלהיך תירא ואתו תעבד ובשמו תשבע
14 'Do not fol ow other gods, gods of the peoples round you,	14 לא תלכון אחרי אלהים אחרים מאלהי העמים אשר סביבותיכם
15 for Yahweh your God among you is a jealous God; the wrath of Yahweh your God would blaze outagainst you, and he would wipe you off the face of the earth.	15 כי אל קנא יהוה אלהיך בקרבך פן יחרה אף יהוה אלהיך בך והשמידך מעל פני האדמה
16 Do not put Yahweh your God to the test as you tested him at Massah.	16 לא תנסו את יהוה אלהיכם כאשר נסיתם במסה
17 Keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and his instructions and laws which he has laid downfor you,	17 שמור תשמרון את מצות יהוה אלהיכם ועדתיו וחקיו אשר צוך
18 and do what Yahweh regards as right and good, so that you may prosper and take possession of thefine country which Yahweh swore to give your ancestors,	18 ועשית הישר והטוב בעיני יהוה למען ייטב לך ובאת וירשת את הארץ הטבה אשר נשבע יהוה לאבתיך
19 driving out your enemies before you; such was Yahweh's promise.	19 להדף את כל איביך מפניך כאשר דבר יהוה
20 'In times to come, when your child asks you, "What is the meaning of these instructions, laws andcustoms which Yahweh our God has laid down for you?"	20 כי ישאלך בנך מחר לאמר מה העדת והחקים והמשפטים אשר צוה יהוה אלהינו אתכם
21 you are to tel your child, "Once we were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, and Yahweh brought us out ofEgypt by his mighty hand.	21 ואמרת לבנך עבדים היינו לפרעה במצרים ויוציאנו יהוה ממצרים ביד חזקה
22 Before our eyes, Yahweh worked great and terrible signs and wonders against Egypt, againstPharaoh and his entire household.	22 ויתן יהוה אותת ומפתים גדלים ורעים במצרים בפרעה ובכל ביתו לעינינו
23 And he brought us out of there, to lead us into the country which he had sworn to our ancestors thathe would give us.	23 ואותנו הוציא משם למען הביא אתנו לתת לנו את הארץ אשר נשבע לאבתינו
24 And Yahweh has commanded us to observe all these laws and to fear Yahweh our God, so as to behappy for ever and to survive, as we do to this day.	24 ויצונו יהוה לעשות את כל החקים האלה ליראה את יהוה אלהינו לטוב לנו כל הימים לחיתנו כהיום הזה
25 For us, right living wil mean this: to keep and observe al these commandments in obedience toYahweh our God, as he has commanded us." '	25 וצדקה תהיה לנו כי נשמר לעשות את כל המצוה הזאת לפני יהוה אלהינו כאשר צונו
