NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch ofAbilene,	1 En el año quince del imperio de Tiberio César, siendo Poncio Pilato procurador de Judea, y Herodes tetrarca de Galilea; Filipo, su hermano, tetrarca de Iturea y de Traconítida, y Lisanias tetrarca de Abilene;
2 and while the high-priesthood was held by Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the sonof Zechariah, in the desert.	2 en el pontificado de Anás y Caifás, fue dirigida la palabra de Dios a Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto.
3 He went through the whole Jordan area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,	3 Y se fue por toda la región del Jordán proclamando un bautismo de conversión para perdón de los pecados,
4 as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one that cries in the desert:Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight!	4 como está escrito en el libro de los oráculos del profeta Isaías: Voz del que clama en el desierto: Preparad el camino del Señor, enderezad sus sendas;
5 Let every val ey be fil ed in, every mountain and hil be level ed, winding ways be straightened andrough roads made smooth,	5 todo barranco será rellenado, todo monte y colina será rebajado, lo tortuoso se hará recto y las asperezas serán caminos llanos.
6 and al humanity wil see the salvation of God.	6 Y todos verán la salvación de Dios.
7 He said, therefore, to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you toflee from the coming retribution?	7 Decía, pues, a la gente que acudía para ser bautizada por él: «Raza de víboras, ¿quién os ha enseñado a huir de la ira inminente?
8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not start telling yourselves, "We have Abraham as ourfather," because, I tel you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.	8 Dad, pues, frutos dignos de conversión, y no andéis diciendo en vuestro interior: “Tenemos por padre a Abraham”; porque os digo que puede Dios de estas piedras dar hijos a Abraham.
9 Yes, even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruitwil be cut down and thrown on the fire.'	9 Y ya está el hacha puesta a la raíz de los árboles; y todo árbol que no dé buen fruto será cortado y arrojado al fuego».
10 When al the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?'	10 La gente le preguntaba: «Pues ¿qué debemos hacer?»
11 he answered, 'Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone withsomething to eat must do the same.'	11 Y él les respondía: «El que tenga dos túnicas, que las reparta con el que no tiene; el que tenga para comer, que haga lo mismo».
12 There were tax collectors, too, who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must wedo?'	12 Vinieron también publicanos a bautizarse, y le dijeron: «Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer?»
13 He said to them, 'Exact no more than the appointed rate.'	13 El les dijo: «No exijáis más de lo que os está fijado».
14 Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'Nointimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'	14 Preguntáronle también unos soldados: «Y nosotros ¿qué debemos hacer?» El les dijo: «No hagáis extorsión a nadie, no hagáis denuncias falsas, y contentaos con vuestra soldada».
15 A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to wonder whether Johnmight be the Christ,	15 Como el pueblo estaba a la espera, andaban todos pensando en sus corazones acerca de Juan, si no sería él el Cristo;
16 so John declared before them al , 'I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, who is morepowerful than me, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit andfire.	16 respondió Juan a todos, diciendo: «Yo os bautizo con agua; pero viene el que es más fuerte que yo, y no soy digno de desatarle la correa de sus sandalias. El os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego.
17 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; butthe chaff he wil burn in a fire that will never go out.'	17 En su mano tiene el bieldo para limpiar su era y recoger el trigo en su granero; pero la paja la quemará con fuego que no se apaga».
18 And he proclaimed the good news to the people with many other exhortations too.	18 Y, con otras muchas exhortaciones, anunciaba al pueblo la Buena Nueva.
19 But Herod the tetrarch, censured by John for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for allthe other crimes he had committed,	19 Pero Herodes, el tetrarca, reprendido por él a causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano, y a causa de todas las malas acciones que había hecho,
20 added a further crime to al the rest by shutting John up in prison.	20 añadió a todas ellas la de encerrar a Juan en la cárcel.
21 Now it happened that when al the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptismwas at prayer, heaven opened	21 Sucedió que cuando todo el pueblo estaba bautizándose, bautizado también Jesús y puesto en oración, se abrió el cielo,
22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven,'You are my Son; today have I fathered you.'	22 y bajó sobre él el Espíritu Santo en forma corporal, como una paloma; y vino una voz del cielo: «Tú eres mi hijo; yo hoy te he engendrado».
23 When he began, Jesus was about thirty years old, being the son, as it was thought, of Joseph son ofHeli,	23 Tenía Jesús, al comenzar, unos treinta años, y era según se creía hijo de José, hijo de Helí,
