1 Now it happened that at this time Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be made ofthe whole inhabited world.	1 Di quei giorni uscì un editto di Cesare Augusto, che si facesse il censo di tutto il mondo.
2 This census -- the first -- took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria,	2 Questo primo censo fu fatto da Cirino preside della Siria.
3 and everyone went to be registered, each to his own town.	3 E andavano tutti a dare il nome ciascheduno alla sua città.
4 So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee for Judaea, to David's town cal ed Bethlehem,since he was of David's House and line,	4 E andò anche Giuseppe da Nazaret città della Galilea alla città di David, chiamata Betlem nella Giudea, per essere egli della casa, e famiglia di David,
5 in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.	5 A dare il nome insieme con Maria sposata a lui in consorte, la quale era incinta.
6 Now it happened that, while they were there, the time came for her to have her child,	6 E avvenne, che, mentre quivi si trovavano,giunse per lei il tempo di partorire.
7 and she gave birth to a son, her first-born. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in amanger because there was no room for them in the living-space.	7 E partorì il figlio suo primogenito,e lo fasciò, e lo pose a giacere in una mangiatoia; perché non erari luogo per essi nell'albergo.
8 In the countryside close by there were shepherds out in the fields keeping guard over their sheep duringthe watches of the night.	8 Ed eranvi nella stessa regione de pastori, che vegliavano, e facean di notte la ronda attorno al lor gregge.
9 An angel of the Lord stood over them and the glory of the Lord shone round them. They were terrified,	9 Quand' ecco sopraggiunse vicino a essi l'Angelo del Signore, e uno splendore divino gli abbarbagliò, e furono presi da gran timore.
10 but the angel said, 'Do not be afraid. Look, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by thewhole people.	10 E l'Angelo disse loro: Non temete: imperocché eccomi a recare a voi la nuova di una grande allegrezza, che avrà tutto il popolo:
11 Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.	11 Perché è nato oggi a voi un Salvatore, che è il Cristo Signore, nella città di David.
12 And here is a sign for you: you wil find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.'	12 Ed eccovene il segnale: troverete un bambino avvolto in fasce, giacente in una mangiatoia.
13 And all at once with the angel there was a great throng of the hosts of heaven, praising God with thewords:	13 E subitamente si unì coll'Angelo una schiera della celestiale milizia, che lodava Dio, dicendo:
14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace for those he favours.	14 Gloria a Dio nel più alto de' cieli, e pace in terra agli uomini di buon volere.
15 Now it happened that when the angels had gone from them into heaven, the shepherds said to oneanother, 'Let us go to Bethlehem and see this event which the Lord has made known to us.'	15 E dopo che gli Angeli si furono ritirati da loro verso il cielo, i pastori presero a dire tra di loro: Andiamo sino a Betlemme a vedere quello, che è ivi accaduto, come il Signore ci ha manifestato.
16 So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.	16 E andarono con prestezza: e trovarono Maria, e Giuseppe, e il Bambino giacente nella mangiatoia.
17 When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him,	17 E vedutolo, intesero quanto era stato detto loro di quel Bambino.
18 and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them.	18 E tutti quelli, che ne sentirono parlare, restarono maravigliati delle cose, che erano state riferite loro dai pastori.
19 As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.	19 Maria però di tutte queste cose facea conserva, paragonandole in cuor suo.
20 And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for al they had heard and seen, just as theyhad been told.	20 E i pastori se ne ritornarono glorificando, e lodando Dio per tutto quello, che udito avevano, e veduto, conforme era stato ad essi predetto.
21 When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, thename the angel had given him before his conception.	21 E compiti, che furono gli otto giorni per fare la circoncisione del bambino, gli fu posto nome GESÙ, conforme era stato nominato dall'Angelo prima di essere concepito.
22 And when the day came for them to be purified in keeping with the Law of Moses, they took him up toJerusalem to present him to the Lord-	22 E venuto il tempo della purificazione di lei secondo la legge di Mosè, lo portarono a Gerusalemme, affine di presentarlo al Signore,
23 observing what is written in the Law of the Lord: Every first-born male must be consecrated to theLord-	23 Secondo quello, che sta scritto nella legge del Signore: Qualunque maschio primogenito sarà consagrato al Signore:
24 and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is prescribed in the Law of the Lord, a pair ofturtledoves or two young pigeons.	24 E per fare l'offerta, conforme sta scritto nella legge del Signore, un paio di tortore, o due colombini.
25 Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he lookedforward to the restoration of Israel and the Holy Spirit rested on him.	25 Era allora in Gerusalemme un uomo chiamato Simeone: e quest' uomo giusto, e timorato, che aspettava la consolazione di Israele; ed era in lui lo Spirito santo.
26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on theChrist of the Lord.	26 Ed eragli stato rivelato dallo Spirito santo, che non avrebbe veduto morte, prima di vedere il Cristo del Signore.
27 Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to dofor him what the Law required,	27 E condotto dallo spirito di Dio andò al tempio. E quando i genitori vi introdussero il bambino Gesù, per fare rispetto a lui il consueto secondo la legge:
28 he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said:	28 Egli se lo prese tra le sue braccia, e benedisse Dio, e disse:
29 Now, Master, you are letting your servant go in peace as you promised;	29 Adesso lascerai, o Signore, cho se ne vada in pace il tuo servo secondo la tua parola:
30 for my eyes have seen the salvation	30 Perché gli occhi miei hanno veduto il Salvatore dato da te,
31 which you have made ready in the sight of the nations;	31 Il quale è stato esposto da te al cospetto di tutti i popoli;
32 a light of revelation for the gentiles and glory for your people Israel.	32 Luce a illuminare le nazioni, e a gloria del popolo tuo Israele.
33 As the child's father and mother were wondering at the things that were being said about him,	33 E il padre, e la madre di Gesù restavano maravigliati delle cose, che di lui si dicevano.
34 Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, 'Look, he is destined for the fal and for the rise ofmany in Israel, destined to be a sign that is opposed-	34 E Simeone li benedisse, e disse a Maria sua madre: Ecco che questi è posto per ruina, e per risurrezione di molti in Israele, e per bersaglio alla contraddizione:
35 and a sword wil pierce your soul too -- so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.'	35 E anche l'anima tua stessa sarà, trapassata dal coltello, affinchè di molti cuori restino disvelati i pensieri.
36 There was a prophetess, too, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was wel on inyears. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years	36 Eravi anche una profetessa, Anna, figliuola di Fanuel, della tribù di Aser: ella era molto avanzata in età, ed era vissuta sette anni col suo marito, al quale erasi sposata fanciulla.
37 before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving Godnight and day with fasting and prayer.	37 Ed ella (era rimasta) vedova fino agli ottantaquattro anni: e non usciva dal tempio, servendo Dio notte, e giorno con orazioni, e digiuni.
38 She came up just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to al wholooked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.	38 E questa, sopraggiungendo in quel tempo stesso, lodava anch'essa il Signore: e parlava di lui a tutti coloro, che aspettavano la redenzione d'Israele.
39 When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their owntown of Nazareth.	39 E soddisfatto che ebbero a tutto quello, che ordinava la legge del Signore, se ne tornarono nella Galilea alla loro città di Nazaret.
40 And as the child grew to maturity, he was filled with wisdom; and God's favour was with him.	40 E il Bambino cresceva, e si fortificava riempiendosi di sapienza: e la grazia di Dio era in lui.
41 Every year his parents used to go to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover.	41 E i suoi genitori andavano ogni anno a Gerusalemme pel dì solenne di pasqua.
42 When he was twelve years old, they went up for the feast as usual.	42 E quando egli fu arrivato all'età di dodici anni, essendo essi andati a Gerusalemme secondo il solito di quella solennità,
43 When the days of the feast were over and they set off home, the boy Jesus stayed behind inJerusalem without his parents knowing it.	43 Allorché passati que' giorni se ne ritornavano, rimase il fanciullo Gesù in Gerusalemme, e non se ne accorsero i suoi genitori.
44 They assumed he was somewhere in the party, and it was only after a day's journey that they went tolook for him among their relations and acquaintances.	44 E pensandosi, che egli fosse coi compagni, camminarono una giornata, e lo andavano cercando tra i parenti, e conoscenti.
45 When they failed to find him they went back to Jerusalem looking for him everywhere.	45 Nè avendolo trovato, tornarono a Gerusalemme a ricercarlo.
46 It happened that, three days later, they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listeningto them, and asking them questions;	46 E avvenne, che dopo tre giorni lo trovarono nel tempio, che sedeva in mezzo ai dottori, e gli ascoltava, e gli interrogava.
47 and all those who heard him were astounded at his intel igence and his replies.	47 E tutti quei, che l'udivano, restavano attoniti della sua sapienza, e delle sue risposte.
48 They were overcome when they saw him, and his mother said to him, 'My child, why have you donethis to us? See how worried your father and I have been, looking for you.'	48 E vedutolo (i genitori) ne fecer le maraviglie. E la Madre sua gli disse: Figlio, perché ci hai tu fatto questo? Ecco che tuo padre, e io addolorati andavamo di te in cerca.
49 He replied, 'Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?'	49 Ed egli disse loro: Perché mi cercavate voi? Non sapevate, come nelle cose spettanti al Padre mio debbo occuparmi?
50 But they did not understand what he meant.	50 Ed eglino non compresero quel, che egli aveva lor detto.
51 He went down with them then and came to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother storedup al these things in her heart.	51 E se n'andò con essi, e fe' ritorno a Nazaret, ed era ad essi soggetto. E la Madre sua di tutte queste cose faceva conserva in cuor suo.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favour with God and with people.	52 E Gesù avanzava in sapienza, in età, e in grazia appresso a Dio e appresso agli uomini.
