Luke 2

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Now it happened that at this time Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be made ofthe whole inhabited world.	1 Sucedió que por aquellos días salió un edicto de César Augusto ordenando que se empadronase todo el mundo.
2 This census -- the first -- took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria,	2 Este primer empadronamiento tuvo lugar siendo gobernador de Siria Cirino.
3 and everyone went to be registered, each to his own town.	3 Iban todos a empadronarse, cada uno a su ciudad.
4 So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee for Judaea, to David's town cal ed Bethlehem,since he was of David's House and line,	4 Subió también José desde Galilea, de la ciudad de Nazaret, a Judea, a la ciudad de David, que se llama Belén, por ser él de la casa y familia de David,
5 in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.	5 para empadronarse con María, su esposa, que estaba encinta.
6 Now it happened that, while they were there, the time came for her to have her child,	6 Y sucedió que, mientras ellos estaban allí, se le cumplieron los días del alumbramiento,
7 and she gave birth to a son, her first-born. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in amanger because there was no room for them in the living-space.	7 y dio a luz a su hijo primogénito, le envolvió en pañales y le acostó en un pesebre, porque no tenían sitio en el alojamiento.
8 In the countryside close by there were shepherds out in the fields keeping guard over their sheep duringthe watches of the night.	8 Había en la misma comarca unos pastores, que dormían al raso y vigilaban por turno durante la noche su rebaño.
9 An angel of the Lord stood over them and the glory of the Lord shone round them. They were terrified,	9 Se les presentó el Angel del Señor, y la gloria del Señor los envolvió en su luz; y se llenaron de temor.
10 but the angel said, 'Do not be afraid. Look, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by thewhole people.	10 El ángel les dijo: «No temáis, pues os anuncio una gran alegría, que lo será para todo el pueblo:
11 Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.	11 os ha nacido hoy, en la ciudad de David, un salvador, que es el Cristo Señor;
12 And here is a sign for you: you wil find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.'	12 y esto os servirá de señal: encontraréis un niño envuelto en pañales y acostado en un pesebre».
13 And all at once with the angel there was a great throng of the hosts of heaven, praising God with thewords:	13 Y de pronto se juntó con el ángel una multitud del ejército celestial, que alababa a Dios, diciendo:
14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace for those he favours.	14 «Gloria a Dios en las alturas y en la tierra paz a los hombres en quienes él se complace».
15 Now it happened that when the angels had gone from them into heaven, the shepherds said to oneanother, 'Let us go to Bethlehem and see this event which the Lord has made known to us.'	15 Y sucedió que cuando los ángeles, dejándoles, se fueron al cielo, los pastores se decían unos a otros: «Vayamos, pues, hasta Belén y veamos lo que ha sucedido y el Señor nos ha manifestado».
16 So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.	16 Y fueron a toda prisa, y encontraron a María y a José, y al niño acostado en el pesebre.
17 When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him,	17 Al verlo, dieron a conocer lo que les habían dicho acerca de aquel niño;
18 and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them.	18 y todos los que lo oyeron se maravillaban de lo que los pastores les decían.
19 As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.	19 María, por su parte, guardaba todas estas cosas, y las meditaba en su corazón.
20 And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for al they had heard and seen, just as theyhad been told.	20 Los pastores se volvieron glorificando y alabando a Dios por todo lo que habían oído y visto, conforme a lo que se les había dicho.
21 When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, thename the angel had given him before his conception.	21 Cuando se cumplieron los ocho días para circuncidarle, se le dio el nombre de Jesús, el que le dio el ángel antes de ser concebido en el seno.
22 And when the day came for them to be purified in keeping with the Law of Moses, they took him up toJerusalem to present him to the Lord-	22 Cuando se cumplieron los días de la purificación de ellos, según la Ley de Moisés, llevaron a Jesús a Jerusalén para presentarle al Señor,
23 observing what is written in the Law of the Lord: Every first-born male must be consecrated to theLord-	23 como está escrito en la Ley del Señor: Todo varón primogénito será consagrado al Señor
24 and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is prescribed in the Law of the Lord, a pair ofturtledoves or two young pigeons.	24 y para ofrecer en sacrificio un par de tórtolas o dos pichones, conforme a lo que se dice en la Ley del Señor.
25 Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he lookedforward to the restoration of Israel and the Holy Spirit rested on him.	25 Y he aquí que había en Jerusalén un hombre llamado Simeón; este hombre era justo y piadoso, y esperaba la consolación de Israel; y estaba en él el Espíritu Santo.
26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on theChrist of the Lord.	26 Le había sido revelado por el Espíritu Santo que no vería la muerte antes de haber visto al Cristo del Señor.
27 Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to dofor him what the Law required,	27 Movido por el Espíritu, vino al Templo; y cuando los padres introdujeron al niño Jesús, para cumplir lo que la Ley prescribía sobre él,
28 he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said:	28 le tomó en brazos y bendijo a Dios diciendo:
29 Now, Master, you are letting your servant go in peace as you promised;	29 «Ahora, Señor, puedes, según tu palabra, dejar que tu siervo se vaya en paz;
30 for my eyes have seen the salvation	30 porque han visto mis ojos tu salvación,
31 which you have made ready in the sight of the nations;	31 la que has preparado a la vista de todos los pueblos,
32 a light of revelation for the gentiles and glory for your people Israel.	32 luz para iluminar a los gentiles y gloria de tu pueblo Israel».
33 As the child's father and mother were wondering at the things that were being said about him,	33 Su padre y su madre estaban admirados de lo que se decía de él.
34 Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, 'Look, he is destined for the fal and for the rise ofmany in Israel, destined to be a sign that is opposed-	34 Simeón les bendijo y dijo a María, su madre: «Este está puesto para caída y elevación de muchos en Israel, y para ser señal de contradicción -
35 and a sword wil pierce your soul too -- so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.'	35 ¡y a ti misma una espada te atravesará el alma! - a fin de que queden al descubierto las intenciones de muchos corazones».
36 There was a prophetess, too, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was wel on inyears. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years	36 Había también una profetisa, Ana, hija de Fanuel, de la tribu de Aser, de edad avanzada; después de casarse había vivido siete años con su marido,
37 before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving Godnight and day with fasting and prayer.	37 y permaneció viuda hasta los ochenta y cuatro años; no se apartaba del Templo, sirviendo a Dios noche y día en ayunos y oraciones.
38 She came up just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to al wholooked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.	38 Como se presentase en aquella misma hora, alababa a Dios y hablaba del niño a todos los que esperaban la redención de Jerusalén.
39 When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their owntown of Nazareth.	39 Así que cumplieron todas las cosas según la Ley del Señor, volvieron a Galilea, a su ciudad de Nazaret.
40 And as the child grew to maturity, he was filled with wisdom; and God's favour was with him.	40 El niño crecía y se fortalecía, llenándose de sabiduría; y la gracia de Dios estaba sobre él.
41 Every year his parents used to go to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover.	41 Sus padres iban todos los años a Jerusalén a la fiesta de la Pascua.
42 When he was twelve years old, they went up for the feast as usual.	42 Cuando tuvo doce años, subieron ellos como de costumbre a la fiesta
43 When the days of the feast were over and they set off home, the boy Jesus stayed behind inJerusalem without his parents knowing it.	43 y, al volverse, pasados los días, el niño Jesús se quedó en Jerusalén, sin saberlo su padres.
44 They assumed he was somewhere in the party, and it was only after a day's journey that they went tolook for him among their relations and acquaintances.	44 Pero creyendo que estaría en la caravana, hicieron un día de camino, y le buscaban entre los parientes y conocidos;
45 When they failed to find him they went back to Jerusalem looking for him everywhere.	45 pero al no encontrarle, se volvieron a Jerusalén en su busca.
46 It happened that, three days later, they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listeningto them, and asking them questions;	46 Y sucedió que, al cabo de tres días, le encontraron en el Templo sentado en medio de los maestros, escuchándoles y preguntándoles;
47 and all those who heard him were astounded at his intel igence and his replies.	47 todos los que le oían, estaban estupefactos por su inteligencia y sus respuestas.
48 They were overcome when they saw him, and his mother said to him, 'My child, why have you donethis to us? See how worried your father and I have been, looking for you.'	48 Cuando le vieron, quedaron sorprendidos, y su madre le dijo: «Hijo, ¿por qué nos has hecho esto? Mira, tu padre y yo, angustiados, te andábamos buscando».
49 He replied, 'Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?'	49 El les dijo: «Y ¿por qué me buscabais? ¿No sabíais que yo debía estar en la casa de mi Padre?»
50 But they did not understand what he meant.	50 Pero ellos no comprendieron la respuesta que les dio.
51 He went down with them then and came to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother storedup al these things in her heart.	51 Bajó con ellos y vino a Nazaret, y vivía sujeto a ellos. Su madre conservaba cuidadosamente todas las cosas en su corazón.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favour with God and with people.	52 Jesús progresaba en sabiduría, en estatura y en gracia ante Dios y ante los hombres.
