Luke 2

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Now it happened that at this time Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be made ofthe whole inhabited world.	1 Or, il advint, en ces jours-là, que parut un édit de César Auguste, ordonnant le recensement de tout lemonde habité.
2 This census -- the first -- took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria,	2 Ce recensement, le premier, eut lieu pendant que Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie.
3 and everyone went to be registered, each to his own town.	3 Et tous allaient se faire recenser, chacun dans sa ville.
4 So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee for Judaea, to David's town cal ed Bethlehem,since he was of David's House and line,	4 Joseph aussi monta de Galilée, de la ville de Nazareth, en Judée, à la ville de David, qui s'appelleBethléem, - parce qu'il était de la maison et de la lignée de David --
5 in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.	5 afin de se faire recenser avec Marie, sa fiancée, qui était enceinte.
6 Now it happened that, while they were there, the time came for her to have her child,	6 Or il advint, comme ils étaient là, que les jours furent accomplis où elle devait enfanter.
7 and she gave birth to a son, her first-born. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in amanger because there was no room for them in the living-space.	7 Elle enfanta son fils premier-né, l'enveloppa de langes et le coucha dans une crèche, parce qu'ilsmanquaient de place dans la salle.
8 In the countryside close by there were shepherds out in the fields keeping guard over their sheep duringthe watches of the night.	8 Il y avait dans la même région des bergers qui vivaient aux champs et gardaient leurs troupeaux durantles veilles de la nuit.
9 An angel of the Lord stood over them and the glory of the Lord shone round them. They were terrified,	9 L'Ange du Seigneur se tint près d'eux et la gloire du Seigneur les enveloppa de sa clarté; et ils furentsaisis d'une grande crainte.
10 but the angel said, 'Do not be afraid. Look, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by thewhole people.	10 Mais l'ange leur dit: "Soyez sans crainte, car voici que je vous annonce une grande joie, qui sera cellede tout le peuple:
11 Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.	11 aujourd'hui vous est né un Sauveur, qui est le Christ Seigneur, dans la ville de David.
12 And here is a sign for you: you wil find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.'	12 Et ceci vous servira de signe: vous trouverez un nouveau-né enveloppé de langes et couché dans unecrèche."
13 And all at once with the angel there was a great throng of the hosts of heaven, praising God with thewords:	13 Et soudain se joignit à l'ange une troupe nombreuse de l'armée céleste, qui louait Dieu, en disant:
14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace for those he favours.	14 "Gloire à Dieu au plus haut des cieux et sur la terre paix aux hommes objets de sa complaisance!"
15 Now it happened that when the angels had gone from them into heaven, the shepherds said to oneanother, 'Let us go to Bethlehem and see this event which the Lord has made known to us.'	15 Et il advint, quand les anges les eurent quittés pour le ciel, que les bergers se dirent entre eux: "Allonsjusqu'à Bethléem et voyons ce qui est arrivé et que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître."
16 So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.	16 Ils vinrent donc en hâte et trouvèrent Marie, Joseph et le nouveau-né couché dans la crèche.
17 When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him,	17 Ayant vu, ils firent connaître ce qui leur avait été dit de cet enfant;
18 and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them.	18 et tous ceux qui les entendirent furent étonnés de ce que leur disaient les bergers.
19 As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.	19 Quant à Marie, elle conservait avec soin toutes ces choses, les méditant en son coeur.
20 And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for al they had heard and seen, just as theyhad been told.	20 Puis les bergers s'en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu pour tout ce qu'ils avaient entendu et vu,suivant ce qui leur avait été annoncé.
21 When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, thename the angel had given him before his conception.	21 Et lorsque furent accomplis les huit jours pour sa circoncision, il fut appelé du nom de Jésus, nomindiqué par l'ange avant sa conception.
22 And when the day came for them to be purified in keeping with the Law of Moses, they took him up toJerusalem to present him to the Lord-	22 Et lorsque furent accomplis les jours pour leur purification, selon la loi de Moïse, ils l'emmenèrent àJérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur,
23 observing what is written in the Law of the Lord: Every first-born male must be consecrated to theLord-	23 selon qu'il est écrit dans la Loi du Seigneur: Tout garçon premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur,
24 and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is prescribed in the Law of the Lord, a pair ofturtledoves or two young pigeons.	24 et pour offrir en sacrifice, suivant ce qui est dit dans la Loi du Seigneur, un couple de tourterelles oudeux jeunes colombes.
25 Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he lookedforward to the restoration of Israel and the Holy Spirit rested on him.	25 Et voici qu'il y avait à Jérusalem un homme du nom de Syméon. Cet homme était juste et pieux; ilattendait la consolation d'Israël et l'Esprit Saint reposait sur lui.
26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on theChrist of the Lord.	26 Et il avait été divinement averti par l'Esprit Saint qu'il ne verrait pas la mort avant d'avoir vu le Christdu Seigneur.
27 Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to dofor him what the Law required,	27 Il vint donc au Temple, poussé par l'Esprit, et quand les parents apportèrent le petit enfant Jésus pouraccomplir les prescriptions de la Loi à son égard,
28 he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said:	28 il le reçut dans ses bras, bénit Dieu et dit:
29 Now, Master, you are letting your servant go in peace as you promised;	29 "Maintenant, Souverain Maître, tu peux, selon ta parole, laisser ton serviteur s'en aller en paix;
30 for my eyes have seen the salvation	30 car mes yeux ont vu ton salut,
31 which you have made ready in the sight of the nations;	31 que tu as préparé à la face de tous les peuples,
32 a light of revelation for the gentiles and glory for your people Israel.	32 lumière pour éclairer les nations et gloire de ton peuple Israël."
33 As the child's father and mother were wondering at the things that were being said about him,	33 Son père et sa mère étaient dans l'étonnement de ce qui se disait de lui.
34 Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, 'Look, he is destined for the fal and for the rise ofmany in Israel, destined to be a sign that is opposed-	34 Syméon les bénit et dit à Marie, sa mère: "Vois! cet enfant doit amener la chute et le relèvement d'ungrand nombre en Israël; il doit être un signe en butte à la contradiction, --
35 and a sword wil pierce your soul too -- so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.'	35 et toi-même, une épée te transpercera l'âme! - afin que se révèlent les pensées intimes de bien descoeurs."
36 There was a prophetess, too, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was wel on inyears. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years	36 Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanouel, de la tribu d'Aser. Elle était fort avancée enâge. Après avoir, depuis sa virginité, vécu sept ans avec son mari,
37 before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving Godnight and day with fasting and prayer.	37 elle était restée veuve; parvenue à l'âge de 84 ans, elle ne quittait pas le Temple, servant Dieu nuit etjour dans le jeûne et la prière.
38 She came up just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to al wholooked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.	38 Survenant à cette heure même, elle louait Dieu et parlait de l'enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient ladélivrance de Jérusalem.
39 When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their owntown of Nazareth.	39 Et quand ils eurent accompli tout ce qui était conforme à la Loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent enGalilée, à Nazareth, leur ville.
40 And as the child grew to maturity, he was filled with wisdom; and God's favour was with him.	40 Cependant l'enfant grandissait, se fortifiait et se remplissait de sagesse. Et la grâce de Dieu était surlui.
41 Every year his parents used to go to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover.	41 Ses parents se rendaient chaque année à Jérusalem pour la fête de la Pâque.
42 When he was twelve years old, they went up for the feast as usual.	42 Et lorsqu'il eut douze ans, ils y montèrent, comme c'était la coutume pour la fête.
43 When the days of the feast were over and they set off home, the boy Jesus stayed behind inJerusalem without his parents knowing it.	43 Une fois les jours écoulés, alors qu'ils s'en retournaient, l'enfant Jésus resta à Jérusalem à l'insu de sesparents.
44 They assumed he was somewhere in the party, and it was only after a day's journey that they went tolook for him among their relations and acquaintances.	44 Le croyant dans la caravane, ils firent une journée de chemin, puis ils se mirent à le rechercher parmileurs parents et connaissances.
45 When they failed to find him they went back to Jerusalem looking for him everywhere.	45 Ne l'ayant pas trouvé, ils revinrent, toujours à sa recherche, à Jérusalem.
46 It happened that, three days later, they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listeningto them, and asking them questions;	46 Et il advint, au bout de trois jours, qu'ils le trouvèrent dans le Temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, lesécoutant et les interrogeant;
47 and all those who heard him were astounded at his intel igence and his replies.	47 et tous ceux qui l'entendaient étaient stupéfaits de son intelligence et de ses réponses.
48 They were overcome when they saw him, and his mother said to him, 'My child, why have you donethis to us? See how worried your father and I have been, looking for you.'	48 A sa vue, ils furent saisis d'émotion, et sa mère lui dit: "Mon enfant, pourquoi nous as-tu fait cela?Vois! ton père et moi, nous te cherchons, angoissés."
49 He replied, 'Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?'	49 Et il leur dit: "Pourquoi donc me cherchiez-vous? Ne saviez-vous pas que je dois être dans la maisonde mon Père?"
50 But they did not understand what he meant.	50 Mais eux ne comprirent pas la parole qu'il venait de leur dire.
51 He went down with them then and came to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother storedup al these things in her heart.	51 Il redescendit alors avec eux et revint à Nazareth; et il leur était soumis. Et sa mère gardait fidèlementtoutes ces choses en son coeur.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favour with God and with people.	52 Quant à Jésus, il croissait en sagesse, en taille et en grâce devant Dieu et devant les hommes.
