NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
He summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to drivethem out and to cure all kinds of disease and all kinds of il ness.1 Et convocatis duodecim discipulis suis, dedit illis potestatem spirituum immundorum, ut ejicerent eos, et curarent omnem languorem, et omnem infirmitatem.
These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is known as Peter, and his brotherAndrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;2 Duodecim autem Apostolorum nomina sunt hæc. Primus, Simon, qui dicitur Petrus : et Andreas frater ejus,
Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax col ector; James the son of Alphaeus, andThaddaeus;3 Jacobus Zebedæi, et Joannes frater ejus, Philippus, et Bartholomæus, Thomas, et Matthæus publicanus, Jacobus Alphæi, et Thaddæus,
Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who was also his betrayer.4 Simon Chananæus, et Judas Iscariotes, qui et tradidit eum.
These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as fol ows: 'Do not make your way to gentile territory, and do not enter any Samaritan town;5 Hos duodecim misit Jesus, præcipiens eis, dicens : In viam gentium ne abieritis, et in civitates Samaritanorum ne intraveritis :
go instead to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.6 sed potius ite ad oves quæ perierunt domus Israël.
And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.7 Euntes autem prædicate, dicentes : Quia appropinquavit regnum cælorum.
Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those suffering from virulent skin-diseases, drive out devils. Youreceived without charge, give without charge.8 Infirmos curate, mortuos suscitate, leprosos mundate, dæmones ejicite : gratis accepistis, gratis date.
Provide yourselves with no gold or silver, not even with coppers for your purses,9 Nolite possidere aurum, neque argentum, neque pecuniam in zonis vestris :
with no haversack for the journey or spare tunic or footwear or a staff, for the labourer deserves hiskeep.10 non peram in via, neque duas tunicas, neque calceamenta, neque virgam : dignus enim est operarius cibo suo.
'Whatever town or vil age you go into, seek out someone worthy and stay with him until you leave.11 In quamcumque autem civitatem aut castellum intraveritis, interrogate, quis in ea dignus sit : et ibi manete donec exeatis.
As you enter his house, salute it,12 Intrantes autem in domum, salutate eam, dicentes : Pax huic domui.
and if the house deserves it, may your peace come upon it; if it does not, may your peace come backto you.13 Et siquidem fuerit domus illa digna, veniet pax vestra super eam : si autem non fuerit digna, pax vestra revertetur ad vos.
And if anyone does not welcome you or listen to what you have to say, as you walk out of the houseor town shake the dust from your feet.14 Et quicumque non receperit vos, neque audierit sermones vestros : exeuntes foras de domo, vel civitate, excutite pulverem de pedibus vestris.
In truth I tel you, on the Day of Judgement it wil be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah than forthat town.15 Amen dico vobis : Tolerabilius erit terræ Sodomorum et Gomorrhæorum in die judicii, quam illi civitati.
Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; so be cunning as snakes and yet innocent asdoves.16 Ecce ego mitto vos sicut oves in medio luporum. Estote ergo prudentes sicut serpentes, et simplices sicut columbæ.
'Be prepared for people to hand you over to sanhedrins and scourge you in their synagogues.17 Cavete autem ab hominibus. Tradent enim vos in conciliis, et in synagogis suis flagellabunt vos :
You will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as evidence to them and to the gentiles.18 et ad præsides, et ad reges ducemini propter me in testimonium illis, et gentibus.
But when you are handed over, do not worry about how to speak or what to say; what you are to saywil be given to you when the time comes,19 Cum autem tradent vos, nolite cogitare quomodo, aut quid loquamini : dabitur enim vobis in illa hora, quid loquamini :
because it is not you who wil be speaking; the Spirit of your Father wil be speaking in you.20 non enim vos estis qui loquimini, sed Spiritus Patris vestri, qui loquitur in vobis.
'Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children wil come forward against theirparents and have them put to death.21 Tradet autem frater fratrem in mortem, et pater filium : et insurgent filii in parentes, et morte eos afficient :
You will be universally hated on account of my name; but anyone who stands firm to the end wil besaved.22 et eritis odio omnibus propter nomen meum : qui autem perseveraverit usque in finem, hic salvus erit.
If they persecute you in one town, take refuge in the next; and if they persecute you in that, takerefuge in another. In truth I tel you, you wil not have gone the round of the towns of Israel before the Son of mancomes.23 Cum autem persequentur vos in civitate ista, fugite in aliam. Amen dico vobis, non consummabitis civitates Israël, donec veniat Filius hominis.
'Disciple is not superior to teacher, nor slave to master.24 Non est discipulus super magistrum, nec servus super dominum suum :
It is enough for disciple to grow to be like teacher, and slave like master. If they have called themaster of the house "Beelzebul", how much more the members of his household?25 sufficit discipulo ut sit sicut magister ejus, et servo, sicut dominus ejus. Si patremfamilias Beelzebub vocaverunt, quanto magis domesticos ejus ?
'So do not be afraid of them. Everything now covered up wil be uncovered, and everything nowhidden wil be made clear.26 Ne ergo timueritis eos. Nihil enim est opertum, quod non revelabitur : et occultum, quod non scietur.
What I say to you in the dark, tel in the daylight; what you hear in whispers, proclaim from thehousetops.27 Quod dico vobis in tenebris, dicite in lumine : et quod in aure auditis, prædicate super tecta.
'Do not be afraid of those who kil the body but cannot kill the soul; fear him rather who can destroyboth body and soul in hell.28 Et nolite timere eos qui occidunt corpus, animam autem non possunt occidere : sed potius timete eum, qui potest et animam et corpus perdere in gehennam.
Can you not buy two sparrows for a penny? And yet not one falls to the ground without your Fatherknowing.29 Nonne duo passeres asse veneunt ? et unus ex illis non cadet super terram sine Patre vestro.
Why, every hair on your head has been counted.30 Vestri autem capilli capitis omnes numerati sunt.
So there is no need to be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.31 Nolite ergo timere : multis passeribus meliores estis vos.
'So if anyone declares himself for me in the presence of human beings, I wil declare myself for him inthe presence of my Father in heaven.32 Omnis ergo qui confitebitur me coram hominibus, confitebor et ego eum coram Patre meo, qui in cælis est.
But the one who disowns me in the presence of human beings, I wil disown in the presence of myFather in heaven.33 Qui autem negaverit me coram hominibus, negabo et ego eum coram Patre meo, qui in cælis est.
'Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: it is not peace I have come to bring, buta sword.34 Nolite arbitrari quia pacem venerim mittere in terram : non veni pacem mittere, sed gladium :
For I have come to set son against father, daughter against mother, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law;35 veni enim separare hominem adversus patrem suum, et filiam adversus matrem suam, et nurum adversus socrum suam :
a person's enemies will be the members of his own household.36 et inimici hominis, domestici ejus.
'No one who prefers father or mother to me is worthy of me. No one who prefers son or daughter tome is worthy of me.37 Qui amat patrem aut matrem plus quam me, non est me dignus : et qui amat filium aut filiam super me, non est me dignus.
Anyone who does not take his cross and fol ow in my footsteps is not worthy of me.38 Et qui non accipit crucem suam, et sequitur me, non est me dignus.
Anyone who finds his life wil lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake wil find it.39 Qui invenit animam suam, perdet illam : et qui perdiderit animam suam propter me, inveniet eam.
'Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one whosent me.40 Qui recipit vos, me recipit : et qui me recipit, recipit eum qui me misit.
'Anyone who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet wil have a prophet's reward; and anyonewho welcomes an upright person because he is upright wil have the reward of an upright person.41 Qui recipit prophetam in nomine prophetæ, mercedem prophetæ accipiet : et qui recipit justum in nomine justi, mercedem justi accipiet.
'If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, then in truth I tel you, he wil most certainly not go without his reward.'42 Et quicumque potum dederit uni ex minimis istis calicem aquæ frigidæ tantum in nomine discipuli : amen dico vobis, non perdet mercedem suam.
