Daniel 8

NEW JERUSALEM	VULGATA
1 In the third year of King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after the one that had original yappeared to me.	1 Anno tertio regni Baltassar regis, visio apparuit mihi. Ego Daniel, post id quod videram in principio,
2 I gazed at the vision, and as I gazed I found myself in Susa, the citadel in the province of Elam; gazingat the vision, I found myself at the Ulai Gate.	2 vidi in visione mea, cum essem in Susis castro, quod est in Ælam regione : vidi autem in visione esse me super portam Ulai.
3 I raised my eyes to look, and I saw a ram standing in front of the gate. It had two horns; both were tal ,but one tal er than the other, and the one that rose the higher was the second.	3 Et levavi oculus meos, et vidi : et ecce aries unus stabat ante paludem, habens cornua excelsa, et unum excelsius altero atque succrescens. 4 I saw the ram butting westwards, northwards and southwards. No animal could stand up to it, nothingcould escape its power. It did as it pleased and became strong.	4 vidi arietem cornibus ventilantem contra occidentem, et contra aquilonem, et contra meridiem, et omnes bestiæ non poterant resistere ei, neque liberari de manu ejus : fecitque secundum voluntatem suam, et magnificatus est.
5 This is what I observed: a he-goat from the west, encroaching over the entire surface of the worldthough never touching the ground, and between its eyes the goat had one majestic horn.	5 Et ego intelligebam : ecce autem hircus caprarum veniebat ab occidente super faciem totius terræ, et non tangebat terram : porro hircus habebat cornu insigne inter oculos suos.
6 It advanced on the two-horned ram, which I had seen standing in front of the gate, and charged at it inthe full force of its fury.	6 Et venit usque ad arietem illum cornutum, quem videram stantem ante portam, et cucurrit ad eum in impetu fortitudinis suæ.
7 I saw it reach the ram; it was enraged with the ram and struck it, breaking both its horns, so that theram was not strong enough to hold its ground; it threw it to the ground and trampled it underfoot; no one wasthere to rescue the ram.	7 Cumque appropinquasset prope arietem, efferatus est in eum, et percussit arietem : et comminuit duo cornua ejus, et non poterat aries resistere ei : cumque eum misisset in terram, conculcavit, et nemo quibat liberare arietem de manu ejus.
8 The he-goat then grew more powerful than ever; but at the height of its strength the great hornsnapped, and in its place sprouted four majestic horns, pointing to the four winds of heaven.	8 Hircus autem caprarum magnus factus est nimis : cumque crevisset, fractum est cornu magnum, et orta sunt quatuor cornua subter illud per quatuor ventos cæli.
9 From one of these, the smal one, sprang a horn which grew to great size towards south and east andtowards the Land of Splendour.	9 De uno autem ex eis egressum est cornu unum modicum : et factum est grande contra meridiem, et contra orientem, et contra fortitudinem.
10 It grew right up to the armies of heaven and flung armies and stars to the ground, and trampled themunderfoot.	10 Et magnificatum est usque ad fortitudinem cæli : et dejecit de fortitudine, et de stellis, et conculcavit eas.
11 It even challenged the power of the Prince of the army; it abolished the perpetual sacrifice andoverthrew the foundation of his sanctuary,	11 Et usque ad principem fortitudinis magnificatum est : et ab eo tulit juge sacrificium, et dejecit locum sanctificationis ejus.
12 and the army too; over the sacrifice it installed iniquity and flung truth to the ground; the horn wasactive and successful.	12 Robur autem datum est ei contra juge sacrificium propter peccata : et prosternetur veritas in terra, et faciet, et prosperabitur.
13 I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one say to the speaker, 'How long is this vision to be --of perpetual sacrifice, of horrifying iniquity, of sanctuary and army trampled underfoot?'	13 Et audivi unum de sanctis loquentem : et dixit unus sanctus alteri nescio cui loquenti : Usquequo visio, et juge sacrificium, et peccatum desolationis quæ facta est : et sanctuarium, et fortitudo conculcabitur ?
14 The first replied, 'Until two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings have gone by: then thesanctuary wil have its rights restored.'	14 Et dixit ei : Usque ad vesperam et mane, dies duo millia trecenti : et mundabitur sanctuarium.
15 As I, Daniel, gazed at the vision and tried to understand it, I saw someone standing in front of me wholooked like a man.	15 Factum est autem cum viderem ego Daniel visionem, et quærerem intelligentiam : ecce stetit in conspectu meo quasi species viri.
16 I heard a human voice cry over the Ulai, 'Gabriel, tell him the meaning of the vision!'	16 Et audivi vocem viri inter Ulai : et clamavit, et ait : Gabriel, fac intelligere istam visionem.
17 He approached the place where I was standing; as he approached, I was seized with terror and fellprostrate on the ground. 'Son of man,' he said to me, 'understand this: the vision shows the time of the End.'	17 Et venit, et stetit juxta ubi ego stabam : cumque venisset, pavens corrui in faciem meam : et ait ad me : Intellige, fili hominis, quoniam in tempore finis complebitur visio.
18 He was stil speaking, when I fainted, face downwards on the ground. He touched me, however, andraised me to my feet.	18 Cumque loqueretur ad me, collapsus sum pronus in terram : et tetigit me, et statuit me in gradu meo,
19 'Come,' he said, 'I shall tel you what is going to happen when the Retribution is over, about the finaltimes.	19 dixitque mihi : Ego ostendam tibi quæ futura sunt in novissimo maledictionis : quoniam habet tempus finem suum.
20 As for the ram which you saw, its two horns are the kings of Media and of Persia.	20 Aries, quem vidisti habere cornua, rex Medorum est atque Persarum.
21 The hairy he-goat is the king of Greece, the large horn between its eyes is the first king.	21 Porro hircus caprarum, rex Græcorum est ; et cornu grande, quod erat inter oculos ejus, ipse est rex primus.
22 The horn which snapped and the four horns which sprouted in its place are four kingdoms rising fromhis nation but not having his strength.	22 Quod autem fracto illo surrexerunt quatuor pro eo : quatuor reges de gente ejus consurgent, sed non in fortitudine ejus.
23 'And at the end of their reign, when the measure of their sins is ful , a king wil arise, a proud-faced,ingenious-minded man.	23 Et post regnum eorum, cum creverint iniquitates, consurget rex impudens facie, et intelligens propositiones ;
24 His power will grow greater and greater, though not through any power of his own; he wil plotincredible schemes, he wil succeed in whatever he undertakes, he wil destroy powerful men and the holy ones,God's people.	24 et roborabitur fortitudo ejus, sed non in viribus suis : et supra quam credi potest, universa vastabit, et prosperabitur, et faciet. Et interficiet robustos, et populum sanctorum
25 Such wil be his resourcefulness of mind that all his treacherous activities wil succeed. He wil growarrogant of heart and destroy many people by taking them unawares. He wil chal enge the power of the Princeof princes but, without any human intervention, he will be broken.	25 secundum voluntatem suam, et dirigetur dolus in manu ejus : et cor suum magnificabit, et in copia rerum omnium occidet plurimos : et contra principem principum consurget, et sine manu conteretur.
26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings which has been revealed is true, but you must keep thevision secret, for there are stil many days to go.'	26 Et visio vespere et mane, quæ dicta est, vera est : tu ergo visionem signa, quia post multos dies erit.
27 At this I, Daniel, lost consciousness; I was il for several days. Then I got up to discharge my duties inthe king's service, keeping the vision a secret and still not understanding what it meant.	27 Et ego Daniel langui, et ægrotavi per dies : cumque surrexissem, faciebam opera regis, et stupebam ad visionem, et non erat qui interpretaretur.
