Daniel 8

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 In the third year of King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after the one that had original yappeared to me.	1 Anno tertio regni Balthasar regis visio apparuit mihi, ego Daniel, postid quod mihi apparuerat in principio.
2 I gazed at the vision, and as I gazed I found myself in Susa, the citadel in the province of Elam; gazingat the vision, I found myself at the Ulai Gate.	2 Vidi in visione, et factum est, dumviderem, eram in Susis castro, quod est in Elam provincia; vidi autem in visioneesse me super rivum Ulai.
3 I raised my eyes to look, and I saw a ram standing in front of the gate. It had two horns; both were tal ,but one tal er than the other, and the one that rose the higher was the second.	3 Et levavi oculos meos et vidi: et ecce aries unusstabat ante rivum habens cornua et cornua excelsa et unum excelsius altero, etexcelsius crescebat in postero.
4 I saw the ram butting westwards, northwards and southwards. No animal could stand up to it, nothingcould escape its power. It did as it pleased and became strong.	4 Vidi arietem cornibus ventilantem contraoccidentem et contra aquilonem et contra meridiem, et omnes bestiae non poterantresistere ei neque liberari de manu eius; fecitque secundum voluntatem suam etmagnificatus est.
5 This is what I observed: a he-goat from the west, encroaching over the entire surface of the worldthough never touching the ground, and between its eyes the goat had one majestic horn.	5 Et ego intellegebam: ecce autem hircus caprarum veniebat aboccidente super faciem totius terrae et non tangebat terram; porro hircushabebat cornu insigne inter oculos suos.
6 It advanced on the two-horned ram, which I had seen standing in front of the gate, and charged at it inthe full force of its fury.	6 Et venit usque ad arietem illumcornutum, quem videram stantem ante rivum, et cucurrit ad eum in impetufortitudinis suae.
7 I saw it reach the ram; it was enraged with the ram and struck it, breaking both its horns, so that theram was not strong enough to hold its ground; it threw it to the ground and trampled it underfoot; no one wasthere to rescue the ram.	7 Vidi eum appropinquantem prope arietem, et efferatus est ineum et percussit arietem et comminuit duo cornua eius, et non poterat ariesresistere ei; cumque eum misisset in terram, conculcavit, et nemo quibatliberare arietem de manu eius.
8 The he-goat then grew more powerful than ever; but at the height of its strength the great hornsnapped, and in its place sprouted four majestic horns, pointing to the four winds of heaven.	8 Hircus autem caprarum magnus factus est nimis;cumque crevisset, fractum est cornu magnum, et orta sunt quattuor cornua locoillius per quattuor ventos caeli.
9 From one of these, the smal one, sprang a horn which grew to great size towards south and east andtowards the Land of Splendour.	9 De uno autem ex eis egressum est cornu unummodicum et factum est grande contra meridiem et contra orientem et contrafortitudinem
10 It grew right up to the armies of heaven and flung armies and stars to the ground, and trampled themunderfoot.	10 et magnificatum est usque ad fortitudinem caeli et deiecit defortitudine et de stellis et conculcavit eas;
11 It even challenged the power of the Prince of the army; it abolished the perpetual sacrifice andoverthrew the foundation of his sanctuary,	11 et usque ad principemfortitudinis magnificatum est et ab eo tulit iuge sacrificium et deiecit locumsanctificationis eius.
12 and the army too; over the sacrifice it installed iniquity and flung truth to the ground; the horn wasactive and successful.	12 Militia autem data est contra iuge sacrificium propterpeccata, et prostrata est veritas in terra; cornu autem fecit et prosperatumest.
13 I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one say to the speaker, 'How long is this vision to be --of perpetual sacrifice, of horrifying iniquity, of sanctuary and army trampled underfoot?'	13 Et audivi unum de sanctis loquentem, et dixit unus sanctus alteri, nesciocui, loquenti: “ Usquequo visio et iuge sacrificium et peccatum desolationis,quae facta est, et sanctuarium et fortitudo conculcabitur? ”.
14 The first replied, 'Until two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings have gone by: then thesanctuary wil have its rights restored.'	14 Et dixit ei:“ Usque ad vesperam et mane, dies duo milia trecenti; et mundabitursanctuarium ”.
15 As I, Daniel, gazed at the vision and tried to understand it, I saw someone standing in front of me wholooked like a man.	15 Factum est autem cum viderem ego Daniel visionem et quaererem intellegentiam,ecce stetit in conspectu meo quasi species viri;
16 I heard a human voice cry over the Ulai, 'Gabriel, tell him the meaning of the vision!'	16 et audivi vocem viri interUlai, et clamavit et ait: “ Gabriel, fac intellegere istum visionem ”.
17 He approached the place where I was standing; as he approached, I was seized with terror and fellprostrate on the ground. 'Son of man,' he said to me, 'understand this: the vision shows the time of the End.'	17 Etvenit et stetit iuxta, ubi ego stabam; cumque venisset, pavens corrui in faciemmeam, et ait ad me: “Intellege, fili hominis, quoniam in tempore finiscomplebitur visio ”.
18 He was stil speaking, when I fainted, face downwards on the ground. He touched me, however, andraised me to my feet.	18 Cumque loqueretur ad me, collapsus sum pronus interram, et tetigit me et statuit me in gradu meo
19 'Come,' he said, 'I shall tel you what is going to happen when the Retribution is over, about the finaltimes.	19 dixitque: “ Ecce egoostendam tibi, quae futura sint in novissimo maledictionis, quoniam in temporeerit finis.
20 As for the ram which you saw, its two horns are the kings of Media and of Persia.	20 Aries, quem vidisti habere cornua, reges Medorum est atque Persarum;
21 The hairy he-goat is the king of Greece, the large horn between its eyes is the first king.	21 porrohircus caprarum rex Graecorum est, et cornu grande, quod erat inter oculos eius,ipse est rex primus.
22 The horn which snapped and the four horns which sprouted in its place are four kingdoms rising fromhis nation but not having his strength.	22 Quod autem, fracto illo, surrexerunt quattuor pro eo,quattuor regna de gente eius consurgent sed non in fortitudine eius.
23 'And at the end of their reign, when the measure of their sins is ful , a king wil arise, a proud-faced,ingenious-minded man.	23 Et postregnum eorum, cum creverint iniquitate, consurget rex impudens facie etintellegens propositiones;
24 His power will grow greater and greater, though not through any power of his own; he wil plotincredible schemes, he wil succeed in whatever he undertakes, he wil destroy powerful men and the holy ones,God's people.	24 et roborabitur fortitudo eius sed non in viribussuis, et supra quam credi potest universa vastabit et prosperabitur et faciet etinterficiet robustos et populum sanctorum,
25 Such wil be his resourcefulness of mind that all his treacherous activities wil succeed. He wil growarrogant of heart and destroy many people by taking them unawares. He wil chal enge the power of the Princeof princes but, without any human intervention, he will be broken.	25 et secundum sapientiam suamprosperabitur dolus in manu eius, et in corde suo magnificabitur et intranquillitate occidet plurimos et contra principem principum consurget et sinemanu conteretur.
26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings which has been revealed is true, but you must keep thevision secret, for there are stil many days to go.'	26 Et visio vespere et mane, quae dicta est, vera est; tu ergosigna visionem, quia post dies multos erit ”.
27 At this I, Daniel, lost consciousness; I was il for several days. Then I got up to discharge my duties inthe king's service, keeping the vision a secret and still not understanding what it meant.	27 Et ego Daniel langui etaegrotavi per dies; cumque surrexissem, faciebam opera regis et stupebam advisionem, et non erat qui intellegeret.
