In the eleventh year, on the first of the month, the word of Yahweh was addressed to me as fol ows,1 And it happened that, in the eleventh year, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
'Son of man, since Tyre has said of Jerusalem: "Aha! She is shattered, the Gateway to the Nations;she now gives way to me. Her riches are ruined!"2 “Son of man, because Tyre has said about Jerusalem: ‘It is Well! The gates of the peoples have been broken! She has been turned toward me. I will be filled. She will be deserted!’
Very well, the Lord Yahweh says this, "Now, Tyre, I am against you,3 because of this, thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and I will cause many nations to rise up against you, just as the waves of the sea rise up.
I shal raise many nations against you as the sea raises its waves. They wil destroy the wal s of Tyre, they will demolish her towers; I shal sweep the dust of her away and reduce her to a naked rock.4 And they will break apart the walls of Tyre, and they will destroy its towers. And I will scrape her dust from her, and I will make her into the barest rock.
She will be a drying-ground out to sea for fishing-nets. For I have spoken- declares Lord Yahweh. Shewil be the prey of the nations.5 She will be a drying place for nets from the midst of the sea. For I have spoken, says the Lord God. And she will be a spoil for the Gentiles.
As for her daughters on the mainland, these will be put to the sword, and they wil know that I amYahweh."6 Likewise, her daughters who are in the field will be slain by the sword. And they shall know that I am the Lord.
'For the Lord Yahweh says this, "From the north, I shall bring Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, kingof kings, down on Tyre with horses, chariots, cavalry and an enormous army.7 For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will lead into Tyre: Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, a king among kings, from the north, with horses, and chariots, and horsemen, and companies, and a great people.
He will put your daughters on the mainland to the sword. He wil build siege-works against you, cast upa siege-ramp against you, raise a screen against you;8 Your daughters who are in the field, he will kill with the sword. And he will surround you with fortifications, and he will put together a rampart on all sides. And he will lift up a shield against you.
he wil pound your wal s with his battering-rams, and demolish your towers with his siege-engines.9 And he will combine moveable shelters and battering rams before your walls, and he will destroy your towers with his armaments.
His horses are so many that their dust wil hide you. The noise of his horsemen and his chariot-wheels wil make your walls tremble as he enters your gates as though storming into a city through the breach.10 He will cover you with the inundation of his horses and with their dust. Your walls will shake at the sound of horsemen and wheels and chariots, when they will have entered your gates, as if through the entrance of a city that has been broken open.
With his horses' hoofs he wil trample through al your streets; he wil put your people to the sword, and throw your massive pil ars to the ground.11 With the hoofs of his horses, he will trample all your streets. He will cut down your people with the sword, and your noble statues will fall to the ground.
Your wealth wil be seized, your merchandise looted, your wal s rased, your luxurious housesshattered, your stones, your timbers, your very dust, thrown into the sea.12 They will lay waste to your wealth. They will despoil your businesses. And they will tear down your walls and overturn your eminent houses. And they will put your stones and your timber and your dust into the midst of the waters.
I shal put an end to the sound of your songs; the sound of your harps wil not be heard again.13 And I will cause the multitude of your songs to cease. And the sound of your stringed instruments will no longer be heard.
I shal reduce you to a naked rock, and make you into a drying-ground for fishing-nets, never to berebuilt; for I, Yahweh, have spoken -declares the Lord Yahweh."14 And I will make you like the barest rock; you will be a drying place for nets. And you will no longer be built up. For I have spoken, says the Lord God.”
'The Lord Yahweh says this to Tyre, "Wil not the islands quake at the sound of your fall, while thewounded groan and the slaughter takes place inside you?15 Thus says the Lord God to Tyre: “Will not the islands shake at the sound of your ruin and at the groans of your slain, when they will have been cut down in your midst?
Al the princes of the sea wil leave their thrones, lay aside their cloaks, take off their embroideredrobes. Dressed in terror they will sit on the ground trembling incessantly, stunned at your fate.16 And all the leaders of the sea will descend from their thrones. And they will cast aside their outer garments and their colorful clothing, and they will be clothed in stupor. They will sit on the ground, and they will wonder with astonishment at your sudden downfall.
"They wil raise the lament for you as fol ows: You are destroyed then, vanished from the seas, famous city, former sea-power, who with her citizens, used to spread terror al over the mainland!17 And taking up a lamentation over you, they will say to you: ‘How could you have perished, you who live in the sea, the famous city that was strong in the sea, with your inhabitants, of whom the whole world was in dread?’
Now the islands are trembling on the day of your fal ; the islands of the sea are terrified by your end.18 Now the ships will be stupefied, in the day of your terror. And the islands of the sea will be disturbed, because no one goes out from you.
"For the Lord Yahweh says this: "When I make you a ruined city like other deserted cities, when Iraise the deep against you and the ocean covers you,19 For thus says the Lord God: When I will have made you a desolate city, like the cities that are uninhabited, and when I will have led the abyss over you, and many waters will have covered you,
when I fling you down with those who go down into the abyss, with the people of long ago, and putyou deep in the underworld, in the ruins of long ago with those who sink into oblivion, so that you can nevercome back or be restored to the land of the living,20 and when I will have dragged you down with those who descend into the pit to the everlasting people, and when I will have assembled you in the lowest parts of the earth, like the desolate places of antiquity, with those who have been brought down into the pit, so that you will be uninhabited, and moreover, when I will have given glory to the land of the living:
I wil make you an object of terror; you wil not exist. People wil look for you but never find you again-- declares the Lord Yahweh!" '21 I will reduce you to nothing, and you shall not be, and if you are sought, you will no longer be found, in perpetuity, says the Lord God.”
