NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Yahweh spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when offering unauthorisedfire.1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they were slain upon their offering strange fire:
Yahweh spoke to Moses and said: 'Tel Aaron your brother that he may not enter the sanctuary insidethe curtain in front of the mercy-seat on the ark whenever he chooses, in case he incurs death, for I appear in acloud on the mercy-seat.2 And he commanded him, saying, Speak to Aaron thy brother, that he enter not at all into the sanctuary, which is within the veil before the propitiatory, with which the ark is covered, lest he die, (for I will appear in a cloud over the oracle,)
'This is how he must enter the sanctuary: with a young bul for a sacrifice for sin and a ram for a burntoffering.3 Unless he first do these things: He shall offer a calf for sin, and a ram for a holocaust.
He will put on a tunic of consecrated linen, wear linen drawers on his body, a linen waistband round hiswaist, and a linen turban on his head. These are the sacred vestments he wil put on after washing himself.4 He shall be vested with a linen tunick, he shall cover his nakedness with linen breeches: he shall be girded with a linen girdle, and he shall put a linen mitre upon his head: for these are holy vestments: all which he shall put on, after he is washed.
'From the community of Israelites he wil receive two he-goats for a sacrifice for sin and a ram for aburnt offering.5 And he shall receive from the whole multitude of the children of Israel two buck goats for sin, and one ram for a holocaust.
After offering the bul as a sacrifice for his own sin and performing the rite of expiation for himself andhis family,6 And when he hath offered the calf and prayed for himself, and for his own house,
he wil take the two he-goats and place them before Yahweh at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.7 He shall make the two buck goats to stand before the Lord in the door of the tabernacle of the testimony:
Aaron wil then draw lots over the two goats, one lot to be for Yahweh and the other lot for Azazel.8 And casting lots upon them both, one to be offered to the Lord, and the other to be the emissary goat:
Aaron wil then take the goat on which the lot "For Yahweh" has fal en, and offer it as a sacrifice for sin.9 That whose lot fell to be offered to the Lord, he shall offer for sin:
But the goat on which the lot "For Azazel" has fal en, will be placed alive before Yahweh, for the riteof expiation to be performed with it, and for it then to be sent to Azazel in the desert.10 But that whose lot was to be the emissary goat, he shall present alive before the Lord, that he may pour out prayers upon him, and let him go into the wilderness.
'Having offered the bul as a sacrifice for his own sin and performed the rite of expiation for himselfand for his family, and slaughtered the bul as a sacrifice for sin,11 After these things are duly celebrated, he shall offer the calf, and praying for himself and for his own house, he shall immolate it:
Aaron wil then fill a censer with live coals from the altar before Yahweh, take two handfuls of finelyground aromatic incense and bring this inside the curtain.12 And taking the censer, which he hath filled with the burning coals of the altar, and taking up with his hand the compounded perfume for incense, he shall go in within the veil into the holy place:
He wil then put the incense on the fire before Yahweh, so that the cloud of incense hides the mercy-seat which is on the Testimony and he does not incur death.13 That when the perfumes are put upon the fire, the cloud and vapour thereof may cover the oracle, which is over the testimony, and he may not die.
He wil then take some of the bul 's blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the eastern side of themercy-seat. He will sprinkle some of the blood seven times with his finger in front of the mercy-seat.14 He shall take also of the blood of the calf, and sprinkle with his finger seven times towards the propitiatory to the east.
'He wil then slaughter the goat for the sacrifice for the sin of the people, and take its blood inside thecurtain, and with this blood do as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it on the mercy-seat and in front ofit.15 And when he hath killed the buck goat for the sin of the people, he shall carry in the blood thereof within the veil, as he was commanded to do with the blood of the calf, that he may sprinkle it over against the oracle,
This is how he must perform the rite of expiation for the sanctuary for the uncleanness of theIsraelites, for their acts of rebel ion and al their sins. 'And this is what he must do for the Tent of Meeting whichremains with them, surrounded by their uncleanness.16 And may expiate the sanctuary from the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and from their transgressions, and all their sins. According to this rite shall he do to the tabernacle of the testimony, which is fixed among them in the midst of the filth of their habitation.
No one must be inside the Tent of Meeting, from the moment he enters to make expiation in thesanctuary until the time he comes out. 'When he has made expiation for himself, for his family, and for the wholecommunity of Israel,17 Let no man be in the tabernacle when the high priest goeth into the sanctuary, to pray for himself and his house, and for the whole congregation of Israel, until he come out.
he must come outside, go to the altar before Yahweh and perform the rite of expiation for it. He willtake some of the bul 's blood and some of the goat's blood and put it on the horns at the corners of the altar alaround it,18 And when he is come out to the altar that is before the Lord, let him pray for himself, and taking the blood of the calf, and of the buck goat, let him pour it upon the horns thereof round about:
and sprinkle some of the blood on it seven times with his finger, thus purifying it and setting it apartfrom the uncleanness of the Israelites.19 And sprinkling with his finger seven times, let him expiate, and sanctify it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.
'Once expiation for the sanctuary, the Tent of Meeting and the altar is complete, he will bring the goatwhich is stil alive.20 After he hath cleansed the sanctuary, and the tabernacle, and the altar, then let him offer the living goat:
Aaron wil then lay both his hands on its head and over it confess al the guilt of the Israelites, al theiracts of rebel ion and all their sins. Having thus laid them on the goat's head, he will send it out into the desertunder the charge of a man waiting ready,21 And putting both hands upon his head, let him confess all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their offences and sins: and praying that they may light on his head, he shall turn him out by a man ready for it, into the desert.
and the goat wil bear all their guilt away into some desolate place. 'When he has sent the goat intothe desert,22 And when the goat hath carried all their iniquities into an uninhabited land, and shall be let go into the desert,
Aaron wil go back into the Tent of Meeting and take off the linen vestments which he wore to enterthe sanctuary and leave them there.23 Aaron shall return into the tabernacle of the testimony, and putting off the vestments, which he had on him before when he entered into the sanctuary, and leaving them there,
He wil then wash his body inside the holy place, put on his vestments and come outside to offer hisown and the people's burnt offering. He wil perform the rite of expiation for himself and for the people,24 He shall wash his flesh in the holy place, and shall put on his own garments. And after that he has come out and hath offered his own holocaust, and that of the people, he shall pray both for himself, and for the people:
and burn the fat of the sacrifice for sin on the altar.25 And the fat that is offered for sins, he shall burn upon the altar.
'The man who led the goat away to Azazel wil wash his clothes and body before entering the camp.26 But he that hath let go the emissary goat, shall wash his clothes, and his body with water, and so shall enter into the camp.
The bul and the goat offered as a sacrifice for sin, the blood of which was taken into the sanctuary forthe rite of expiation, must be taken outside the camp, where their skin, meat and offal are to be burnt.27 But the calf and the buck goat, that were sacrificed for sin, and whose blood was carried into the sanctuary, to accomplish the atonement, they shall carry forth without the camp, e and shall burn with fire, their skins and their flesh, and their dung:
The man who burns them wil wash his clothes and body before entering the camp.28 And whosoever burneth them shall wash his clothes, and flesh with water, and so shall enter into the camp.
'This wil be a perpetual law for you. 'On the tenth day of the seventh month you will fast and refrainfrom work, both citizen and resident alien;29 And this shall be to you an everlasting ordinance: The seventh month, the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and shall do no work, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you.
for this is the day on which the rite of expiation will be performed for you to purify you, to purify youbefore Yahweh from al your sins.30 Upon this day shall be the expiation for you, and the cleansing from all your sins: you shall be cleansed before the Lord.
It wil be a sabbatical rest for you and you wil fast. This is a perpetual law.31 For it is a sabbath of rest, and you shall afflict your souls by a perpetual religion.
'The rite of expiation wil be performed by the priest who has been anointed and instal ed to officiatein succession to his father. He wil put on the linen vestments, the sacred vestments,32 And the priest that is anointed, and whose hands are consecrated to do the office of the priesthood in his father's stead, shall make atonement; and he shall be vested with the linen robe and the holy vestments,
and perform the rite of expiation for the holy sanctuary, the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and wilthen perform the rite of expiation for the priests and al the people of the community.33 And he shall expiate the sanctuary and the tabernacle of the testimony and the altar, the priest also and all the people.
This wil be a perpetual law for you; once a year the rite of expiation wil be made for the Israelites foral their sins.' And as Yahweh ordered Moses, so it was done.34 And this shall be an ordinance for ever, that you pray for the children of Israel, and for all their sins once in a year. He did therefore as the Lord had commanded Moses.
