NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Woe to you, destroying though not yourself destroyed, betraying though not yourself betrayed; whenyou have finished destroying, you wil be destroyed, when you have stopped betraying, you wil be betrayed.1 Woe to thee that spoilest, shalt not thou thyself also be spoiled? and thou that despisest, shalt not thyself also be despised? when thou shalt have made an end of spoiling, thou shalt be spoiled: when being wearied thou shalt cease to despise, thou shalt be despised.
Yahweh, show us your mercy, we hope in you. Be our arm every morning and our salvation in time ofdistress.2 O Lord, have mercy on us: for we have waited for thee: be thou our arm in the morning, and our salvation in the time of trouble.
At the sound of tumult the peoples flee, when you stand up the nations scatter.3 At the voice of the angel the people fled, and at the lifting up thyself the nations are scattered.
Your spoil is gathered in as a grasshopper gathers in, like a swarm of locusts people descend on it.4 And your spoils shall be gathered together as the locusts are gathered, as when the ditches are full of them.
Yahweh is exalted, for he is enthroned above, he has fil ed Zion with fair judgement and saving justice.5 The Lord is magnified, for he hath dwelt on high: he hath filled Sion with judgment and justice.
You can count on this al your days: wisdom and knowledge are the riches that save, the fear ofYahweh is his treasure.6 And there shall be faith in thy times: riches of salvation, wisdom and knowledge: the fear of the Lord is his treasure.
Look, Ariel is lamenting in the streets, the ambassadors of peace are weeping bitterly.7 Behold they that see shall cry without, the angels of peace shall weep bitterly.
The highways are deserted, no travel ers any more on the roads. Agreements are broken, witnessesheld in contempt, there is respect for no one.8 The ways are made desolate, no one passeth by the road, the covenant is made void, he hath rejected the cities, he hath not regarded the men.
The land pines away in mourning, the Lebanon is withering with shame, Sharon has become like thewasteland, Bashan and Carmel are shuddering.9 The land hath mourned, and languished: Libanus is confounded and become foul, and Saron is become as a desert: and Basan and Carmel are shaken.
'Now I shal stand up,' says Yahweh, 'now I shal rise, now draw myself up.10 Now will I rise up, saith the Lord: now will I be exalted, now will I lift up myself.
You conceive chaff, you give birth to straw: like fire, my breath wil devour you.11 You shall conceive heat, you shall bring forth stubble: your breath as fire shall devour you.
The peoples will be burnt up as though by quicklime, like cut thorns they wil be burnt on the fire.12 And the people shall be as ashes after a fire, as a bundle of thorns they shall be burnt with fire.
You who are far away, listen to what I have done, and you who are near, realise my strength.'13 Hear, you that are far off, what I have done, and you that are near know my strength.
The sinners in Zion are panic-stricken and fear seizes on the godless, 'Which of us can survive thedevouring fire, which of us survive everlasting burning?'14 The sinners in Sion are afraid, trembling hath seized upon the hypocrites. Which of you can dwell with devouring fire? which of you shall dwell with everlasting burnings?
The one who acts uprightly and speaks honestly, who scorns to get rich by extortion, who rejectsbribes out of hand, who refuses to listen to plans involving bloodshed and shuts his eyes rather thancountenance crime:15 He that walketh in justices, and speaketh truth, that casteth away avarice by oppression, and shaketh his hands from all bribes, that stoppeth his ears lest he hear blood, and shutteth his eyes that he may see no evil.
such a man wil live on the heights, the craggy rocks wil be his refuge, he wil be fed, he wil not wantfor water.16 He shall dwell on high, the fortifications of rocks shall be his highness: bread is given him, his waters are sure.
Your eyes will gaze on the king in his beauty, they wil look on a country stretching far and wide.17 His eyes shall see the king in his beauty, they shall see the land far off.
Your heart wil meditate on past terrors, 'Where is the man who did the counting? Where is the manwho did the weighing? Where is the man who counted off the towers?'18 Thy heart shall meditate fear: where is the learned? where is he that pondereth the words of the law? where is the teacher of little ones?
No more wil you see that insolent people, that people of unintel igible speech, of barbarous andmeaningless tongue.19 The shameless people thou shalt not see, the people of profound speech: so that thou canst not understand the eloquence of his tongue, in whom there is no wisdom.
Gaze at Zion, city of our feasts; your eyes wil see Jerusalem as a home that is secure, a tent not tobe moved, none of its tent-pegs ever to be pul ed out, none of its guy-ropes ever to be broken.20 Look upon Sion the city of our solemnity: thy eyes shall see Jerusalem, a rich habitation, a tabernacle that cannot be removed: neither shall the nails thereof be taken away for ever, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken:
There it is that Yahweh shows us his power, like a place of rivers and very wide canals on which willrow no galley, over which wil pass no majestic ship.21 Because only there our Lord is magnificent: it place of rivers, very broad and spacious streams: no ship with oars shall pass by it, neither shall the great galley pass through it.
(For Yahweh is our judge, Yahweh our lawgiver, Yahweh is our king and our Saviour.)22 For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king: he will save us.
Your tackle has given way, it cannot support the mast, it cannot hoist the pennon. And so there ismuch booty to be shared out; the lame fal to plundering,23 Thy tacklings are loosed, and they shall be of no strength: thy mast shall be in such condition, that thou shalt not be able to spread the flag. Then shall the spoils of much prey be divided: the lame shall take the spoil.
and no one living there wil say, 'I am sickly'; the people living there wil find their guilt forgiven.24 Neither shall he that is near, say: I am feeble. The people that dwell therein, shall have their iniquity taken away from them.
